Black Dog by Caitlin Kittredge

Hellhound Chronicles, Book 1

Synopsis: Ava has spent the last hundred years as a hellhound, the indentured servant of a reaper who hunts errant souls and sends them to Hell. When a human necromancer convinces her to steal her reaper’s scythe, Ava incurs the wrath of the demon Lilith, her reaper’s boss.

As punishment for her transgression, Lilith orders Ava to track down the last soul in her reaper’s ledger . . . or die trying.

But after a hundred years of servitude, it’s time for payback. And Hell hath no fury like an avenging Ava . .

Review: I really like the Black London series by the same author and I was curious to try a new story by her hand. I must say it had it all, demons, fallen angels, necromancers, reapers and even hellhounds. Oh yes a story full of characters and ideas to discover.

Ava is spending her death serving a man she does not love and she is sent on many dangerous missions to recover the souls of those with whom he has a contract. But then her last mission will change everything. Launched in the footsteps of Leo, a Russian necromancer, she will have to make a decision. Allying with Leo and try to kill Gari, her reaper or fight against her attacker and possibly die at the same time. Giving prominence to her desire for freedom, the young woman will give it all out and kill Gari. Yet freedom is far from there when Lilith, a powerful demon appears before her and leaves her no choice but to go in search of a very important man who seems determined to stay hidden far from the underworld. Their meeting could upset everything in which Ava thought and force her to act for the good of all.

I was very curious to find out what exactly was going on with Ava. I must say that the young woman will have plenty to do between what is happening. Besides, I had a little trouble to really hang up to the whole story as the pace was too fast. We can well understand the desire for freedom of the young woman, her desire for vengeance, her fear of death and her desire to find someone who could love her or at least appreciate her. Her life and death are far from easy but I was fascinated to learn more about her condition as a hellhound. Leo, the necromancer is also quite intriguing. I was curious to understand if we could finally trust him or not. He is a dark and mysterious man who is not necessarily nice and good but who nevertheless will help and support Ava in her efforts. Besides that he has a big problem with his father and we learn more about it all along the chapters. But they are not alone, as we also have the man that Ava is looking for and, it was quite hard to understand exactly what he wanted from the young woman and what he knew about her.

It was a good book though as I said everything is a little fast but it was certainly very interesting to see the characters and their stories. I’m curious to see what the author will present in the next book anyway!

Black Dog de Caitlin Kittredge (VO)

Hellhound Chronicles, Tome 1

In a Fix – Linda Grimes

The start of an original new urban fantasy series starring human chameleon Ciel Halligan

Snagging a marriage proposal for her client while on an all-expenses-paid vacation should be a simple job for Ciel Halligan, aura adaptor extraordinaire. A kind of human chameleon, she’s able to take on her clients’ appearances and slip seamlessly into their lives, solving any sticky problems they don’t want to deal with themselves. No fuss, no muss. Big paycheck.

This particular assignment is pretty enjoyable… that is, until Ciel’s island resort bungalow is blown to smithereens and her client’s about-to-be-fiancé is snatched by modern-day Vikings. For some reason, Ciel begins to suspect that getting the ring is going to be a tad more difficult than originally anticipated.

Going from romance to rescue requires some serious gear-shifting, as well as a little backup. Her best friend, Billy, and Mark, the CIA agent she’s been crushing on for years—both skilled adaptors—step in to help, but their priority is, annoyingly, keeping her safe. Before long, Ciel is dedicating more energy to escaping their watchful eyes than she is to saving her client’s intended.

Suddenly, facing down a horde of Vikings feels like the least of her problems.

Demon Bound by Caitlin Kittredge (VO)

Black London, Book 2

Synopsis: Thirteen years ago, Jack Winter lay dying in a graveyard.  Jack called upon a demon and traded his soul for his life… and now the demon is back to collect its due.  But Jack has finally found something to live for.  Her name is Pete Caldecott, and because of her, Jack’s not going to Hell without a fight.

Pete doesn’t know about Jack’s bargain, but she does know that something bigger and far more dangerous than Jack’s demon is growing in the Black.  Old gods are stirring and spirits are rising–and Jack doesn’t stand a chance of stopping them without Pete’s help.
Review: I was impatient to have the possibility to get into this second novel to know how Pete and Jack have evolved since the first volume. I was also very curious to see the progression about their relationship because I have to say we can easily feel the tension between our two protagonists.
Pete is today totally immerged in this world she doesn’t know anything about. She is now herself a part of the darkness despite Jack tries to do his best to protect her. Ah Jack… what can I say about him? The first thing would be: but how the hell can Pete stay with him???? I agree, he has a little something more but well he is also so annoying and rude with everyone! I don’t know if I could be as calm as her but it’s also his way to show he likes her. We easily note all the changes and the concessions he made to become a better man (if it’s possible) to be with her. He asks himself a lot of questions, tries to do the best but however it’s never enough. He is the caricature of the anti-hero and in the same time we can only be appreciative about his choices when we know what he really thinks.
Pete completes him perfectly; she is sweet but determined when she needs to be. She knows how to put him back on track and to supportall his caprices, so we can only be impressed by her nature. It’s a young woman like no one else, she will also do anything to protect jack, and it’s a quite difficult task. They form an atypicalcouple but they finally perfectly matched together by their complementarities.
This volume announces some great things for the following story. The first one allowed us to discover the world and the darkness where our two protagonists evolved. This one prepares us to some changes that will surely have big consequences in the third book. Indeed, I’m very curious to know what will happen.
As expected, we can assist to the evolution of the relationship between Pete and jack. It’s touchy to see them together, they don’t know how to act, how to show their feelings. In this novel, our heroes will have to face a haunted house and a demon who wants his due, the soul of jack.
Pete is a little less present here than in the first one but it’s very intriguing to follow Jack and to meet the persons he knows, to see how he faces all these dangerous situations.
To conclude, it’s a very interesting volume and now I just want to continue the series. I hope I could read the third one soon!

But for Riley, the case takes a chilling turn when a second killer starts trailing mutilated bodies of his own: a crazed young vamp choosing victims from a past marked by tragedy. Riley knows she’s got the skill and cunning to catch two serial killers at once…until one of them strikes inside her own tight-knit clan—and a sexy beast of a vampire reenters her life to aid in the hunt. His name is Quinn. He’s lived forever, shed blood, and shared pleasure…and he’s the only man over whom Riley has absolutely no control….

Street Magic by Caitlin Kittredge (VO)

Black London, Book 1

Even though she’s spent years disavowing the supernatural, Pete follows Jack into the invisible fey underworld, where she hopes to discover the truth about what happened to Bridget—and what happened to Jack on that dark day so long ago…

Review : I was very intrigued by this book since I’ve seen the cover and therefore I was curious to know how it really was.
Pete is a young traumatized woman by an event from her adolescence. The first pages of the book face us about what happened without really getting us any details. A magic ritual, the death of Jack : one of the main character and some omnipresent nightmares. But it’s all along the story that we can understand what it is about.

Petunia, detective, investigates about kid’s kidnapping and meets an informer, a man she thought dead : Jack. She will team up with him all along the inquest to discover what really happen to these children. Jack will lead Pete in a new world she doesn’t know anything about but it will be difficult for her to adapt.
It was weird that she trusts so fast Jack and follows him everywhere without really asking any questions about their past. She wants so bad to save him from the person he is now that she doesn’t even think about what she is doing. There is an huge tension between the two of them, but nothing happens. However, when we see how they act together, we could believe it’s an old couple. Anyway, I wonder how their relationship will evolve in the sequel.
The story has a dynamic rhythm with all the successive events. We never get bored and we’re very intrigued by this original world. We have some revelations little by little, which allow us to stay alert all along the book, to know the truth. But I hope we will lean more in the second novel.

We quickly like the two protagonists, despite they’re very different. It’s difficult for Pete to evolve on the margins of the law, but she has no choice, mainly in this merciless world where mages and sorcerers kill each other. She thinks she has matured since her 16, but I think it’s not really true, not for some points. However, her attitude about Jack is practically the same despite she decides now to impose her choices. She trusts him in the beginning although he doesn’t make anything for that, it amplifies her naivete. We have a lot of questions about Jack. And we quickly understand that he wants something from her, but we must wait the end to know what it is exactly.
I think this first novel lays the base of the story for the next novels.
