An Artificial Night by Seanan McGuire

October Daye, Book 3

Synopsis: Changeling knight in the court of the Duke of Shadowed Hills, October “Toby” Daye has survived numerous challenges that would destroy fae and mortal alike.

Now Toby must take on a nightmarish new assignment. Someone is stealing both fae and mortal children—and all signs point to Blind Michael. When the young son of Toby’s closest friends is snatched from their Northern California home and his sister falls into a coma-like state, the situation becomes way too personal. Toby has no choice but to track the villains down, even when there are only three magical roads by which to reach Blind Michael’s realm—home of the legendary Wild Hunt—and no road may be taken more than once. If she cannot escape with all the children before the candle that guides and protects her burns away, Toby herself will fall prey to the Wild Hunt and Blind Michael’s inescapable power.
And it doesn’t bode well for the success of her mission that her own personal Fetch, May Daye—the harbinger of Toby’s own death—has suddenly turned up on her doorstep…

Review: I didn’t wait very long to read the third book of the October Daye series. This volume is a lot more moving than the previous one and has a faster rhythm. It was still a great pleasure to see our heroine, especially after the events of Volume 2. I must say I’m really happy for being able to immediatly immerse myself in this new story.

October will face many dangers in this book that she never knew existed. Children disappear around the city, whether human or fae but when the three children of her best friends are concerned, she does not need more to get them back for their parents. And even if it is because of Blind Michael, the brother of Luidaeg, who is one of the most powerful entities the world, he is not her biggest concern. Toby is determined to carry out her quest despite what everyone told her, and whatever she could face throughout the story.

I was glad to be able to see a little more Tybbalt in this volume, because ultimately he was only present at the end of the previous volume. It is the same for Connor as he is a really nice character. All the protagonists that we have met before are back among us with a great pleasure. The relationships of our heroine and her choices have also evolved although this is perhaps not the way she would have liked. We have many questions about the change of attitude of Tybbalt, mainly with his cryptic comments which have no answers (yes I must say that I was greatly disturbed not to know what he meant). Of course, a lot of information about each of our characters are set for our greatest pleasure. I must say I was really surprised, I did not expect at all this, but we understand better some characters or certain acts of those present throughout history.

This volume initiates many events, some are concluded but others announce new great things and I must say I was so curious to know what would happen now that I immediately ordered the fourth volume.

The story is really interesting and we learn more about the world of Faerie. This new universe we discover through our heroine is intriguing and full of dangers (yes of course, otherwise it would not be as funny, isn’t it?).

I can say that in the end I really enjoyed this book and I really look forward to learn more new information. This is a great series that deserves to be discovered if you do not know it yet.
