Darkness Unmasked by Keri Arthur

Dark Angels, Book 5

Synopsis: Half-werewolf, half-Aedh Risa Jones is beginning to believe that the only way to find the keys she’s been searching for and save her friends is by dying. And when Wolfgang Schmidt, the lover of her boss at the vampire council, is found dead, her worst fears are confirmed. With the first portal of hell permanently open, the energies of the dark path are leaching into the world.

Searching for Schmidt’s killer and the keys at the same time, Risa and reaper Azriel track a shape-shifting spider spirit capable of changing her form into a seductive woman. But when they finally find the second key, the Aedh Lucian snatches it and disappears.

Risa is intent on finding Lucian and fighting him to the death—for in her mind, she knows that neither can remain while the other lives…

Review: And now here it is a new volume featuring our dear Risa. I always take a great pleasure in immersing myself in each novel, and this time was not an exception.

So as I said, we find our heroine who must manage to deal with some new problems. The Hunter’s lover, an elderly and powerful vampire, is found dead in the strangest ways. Oh yes! You’ll quickly understand why…. Some webs, a bite, an empty shell… Yes spiders are staged here and one thing is for sure, they are not really nice. Except that Risa really does not like these little creatures and this survey seems far from a cakewalk (for us neither for that matter). But of course, in addition to this, our dear heroine continues her search for the keys which seems more and more difficult, but we will learn a few details about it too. But we’ll also have some revelations about Tao, and Lucian and I confess that I did not expect to see how much he manipulated the young woman and how evil and crazy he was. I am also pleased to announce that we will also see Riley, Quinn and Rohan in the story! Yes all three of them! And we also learn the identity of the Risa’s mother killer. And while it is true that I was quite surprised, I do not even know why the idea did not come to me before.

As always I loved to learn a little more about our dear Reaper, who is really mysterious. I must say that I also love to deepen my ideas of the world and the characters. But more things are revealed at the end of the story and although it is true that I am sad of the consequences, I also understand why Risa did what she did. I admit that this end has made me even more curious to read the sixth book and I really want to know how Risa will face the world around her from now. Yet we also learn more about their relationship and it’s true that it’s nice to see they’re freer towards each other.

So many things happen here and it is true that I had a great time with the story as always. Risa did not have much time to rest between all these events. But as always, I enjoyed following her and I can not wait to have more.

  1. Well this series is new to me but that cover is so badass!! I really want to read this series now and it seems to me that Risa is a great character I need to meet. I’m so glad you enjoyed this one and great review, Melliane! 🙂

  2. I’m WAY behind in this series . . . honestly b/c I got a little bit bored. I think I was in book 2 when I took a break. BUT it looks like things are picking up again, so maybe I’ll give it another shot. After I’m done with The Hollows, LOL. Thanks for sharing, Melliane!

  3. This is one of those series I might wanna try, but I always wonder if we’re talking angels, like biblical-relation kind of angels, which generally keeps me at bay, lol.
It sounds like a great read and if the worldbuilding is paranormal not religion-based (like angels can be angels cause they have feathery wings, powers, etc, but no actual faith elements would be involved), I’d actually love to try it out 🙂

  4. I enjoyed the earlier books in this series, but not so much the later ones. The lack of progress where the keys is concerned annoyed me, plus Risa gets kidnapped WAY too much IMO. I really like Keri Arthur’s writing, but her Dark Angels were a let down. But, at least someone is enjoying ’em. Hehe 😉

  5. This sounds like a fun series and for some reason reminds me of the Fever series – the way you describe how the world is built slowly and things are revealed in each book. I def like the sound of that! 🙂

  6. Sounds like it was a great continuation, and welcoming back some other characters. I love that there can be a twist when it comes to murder (I mean, a lot of them are pretty predictable, so good on that.) Though, don’t mention spiders, ahhhhhhh, seriously, just the words give me the creeps and now I’m looking at my ceiling as I type this because ugh I hate them.
