Guest Post – Kait Ballenger + giveaway

With release of Shadow Hunter, I want to welcome Kait Ballenger and thank her for this interesting guest post.

——-

I envy writers who can write easily wherever they go. On a train, on a plane, in a car, at a bar, you name it…(I see a Dr. Seuss book in the making there). For the sake of the topic question that I was asked to write about for this guest post, I wish I could tell you my favorite place to write is a café in Ecuador or a hotel room outside of France (both settings I’ve written in before), because that would be far more interesting than the real answer. Unfortunately, I can’t, though I wish I could. I am envious of those writers who say anywhere is the best place to write or they have interesting writing locations they love. It’s not that I can’t write in all those places. I definitely can. I’ve written in other countries, on different continents, on a boat in the middle of the ocean even. In fact, I started working on edits for Shadow Hunter while in Spain, worked on them on a train ride to France, then again while in France, and finally finished them while in Belgium. The writer in me wants to be interesting and adventurous and say those are the best places to write, but honestly, that’s not the truth. Nowhere am I most productive than in the comfort of my own home. Sometimes that’s in my home office, other times it’s on the couch in my living room, or sitting in the middle of my bed, or in an armchair. It takes many forms. Why do I love writing in my own home? To me, it’s the most comfortable place I can be. Here, I can be the lazy writer in my pajamas with little to no makeup and somewhat messy hair and the only one here to judge me is my wonderfully nonjudgmental husband, who also happens to be a writer and who also sometimes sits around in his house clothes and with messy hair doing exactly that: writing. Not only is it about comfort, but I know my creativity is sacred here. I am less likely to be interrupted writing in my own home than at a restaurant or a café. I’m free of distraction and noise, so while writing other places can sometimes be fun, I am most productive and write the most when I’m at home. And ultimately, one of my goals as a writer is not only to produce good work, but to produce plenty of it, to temporarily satiate the desire my readers have for more stories, so where I’m most productive is definitely the best. Call me a homebody if you will, but I’ll stay in my PJs and kick back in my office armchair 😉

  1. LOL, I’m am SO in agreement. I don’t write much, but when I do, I am totally in the zone, and can’t stand outside distractions. That means at home in my office, and if I can stay in yoga pants, even better. Great post, and thanks for the giveaway!

  2. This is so true! I envy people who can write freely wherever they are, but damn I even have a special chair I sit on when I have a lot of things to do. So yeah I totally understand. Great post 🙂

  3. “Here, I can be the lazy writer in my pajamas with little to no makeup and somewhat messy hair and the only one here to judge me is my wonderfully nonjudgmental husband”

YES!!! That pretty much sums up my working life too, just swap out “writer” for “designer”:) I’m a homebody for sure, like you said, I’m comfortable here, there are less distractions and I just work better when I’m relaxed. There’s no more relaxing place for me than home!

  4. To be honest, it’s the same for me. I get distracted easily, so writing at home is a lot easier for me, and I write notes everywhere, on scrap pieces and such (I’m so not organised whatsoever) so it’s just easier being in a zone that you can just spread everything out and see where you carry on from, haha. Great guest post!
