Guest Post – Kait Ballenger + giveaway

With release of Shadow Hunter, I want to welcome Kait Ballenger and thank her for this interesting guest post.

——-

I envy writers who can write easily wherever they go. On a train, on a plane, in a car, at a bar, you name it…(I see a Dr. Seuss book in the making there). For the sake of the topic question that I was asked to write about for this guest post, I wish I could tell you my favorite place to write is a café in Ecuador or a hotel room outside of France (both settings I’ve written in before), because that would be far more interesting than the real answer. Unfortunately, I can’t, though I wish I could. I am envious of those writers who say anywhere is the best place to write or they have interesting writing locations they love. It’s not that I can’t write in all those places. I definitely can. I’ve written in other countries, on different continents, on a boat in the middle of the ocean even. In fact, I started working on edits for Shadow Hunter while in Spain, worked on them on a train ride to France, then again while in France, and finally finished them while in Belgium. The writer in me wants to be interesting and adventurous and say those are the best places to write, but honestly, that’s not the truth. Nowhere am I most productive than in the comfort of my own home. Sometimes that’s in my home office, other times it’s on the couch in my living room, or sitting in the middle of my bed, or in an armchair. It takes many forms. Why do I love writing in my own home? To me, it’s the most comfortable place I can be. Here, I can be the lazy writer in my pajamas with little to no makeup and somewhat messy hair and the only one here to judge me is my wonderfully nonjudgmental husband, who also happens to be a writer and who also sometimes sits around in his house clothes and with messy hair doing exactly that: writing. Not only is it about comfort, but I know my creativity is sacred here. I am less likely to be interrupted writing in my own home than at a restaurant or a café. I’m free of distraction and noise, so while writing other places can sometimes be fun, I am most productive and write the most when I’m at home. And ultimately, one of my goals as a writer is not only to produce good work, but to produce plenty of it, to temporarily satiate the desire my readers have for more stories, so where I’m most productive is definitely the best. Call me a homebody if you will, but I’ll stay in my PJs and kick back in my office armchair 😉

———————-

Immortal Hunter by Kait Ballenger + GIVEAWAY

Execution Underground, Book 2

Synopsis: Hunters of the supernatural, the Execution Underground are an elite group tasked with protecting humanity…but at what price? As an exorcist, David Aronowitz grew up the target of demonic assassins. Now he’s a member of the Execution Underground and hellspawn everywhere fear his name. But when a demon slips into the seductive body of the only woman he’s ever loved, David must confront the heartbreak of their past to save her. The piece of her heart Allsún O’Hare gave to David so long ago left her trapped between two worlds: the Fae and the human. And when David comes to her rescue, fate reunites her with her greatest temptation—and her biggest mistake. Now, as they’re swept together into a wicked game with the demon who controls her, David must decide if saving Allsún’s life is worth sacrificing his own—and the future of humanity itself.

Review: I really liked the first book and it’s true that I was curious to see who would be put forward in this sequel. So here we are this time with a Jace’s friend: David, and of course accompanied by a young woman who is none other than Allsun, a friend of Frankie.

Since the end of the first novel, Allsun found herself in a kind of coma for a month and David oversees her every day since this event, hoping she would wake up again soon. Yet, it seems that recently her real identity as Fae was revealed, and some demons are increasingly willing to kill her. And while the young man is called one day to exorcise a demon in a family, he discovers this entire family killed both parents and their baby, something that initiates many problems for our heroes elsewhere. While he investigates, he is really surprised to see Allsun at the crime scene, the girl who once awakened, felt strangely drawn to this place. Unwittingly, and to scare away the demons, the young woman will be forced to stay with her ex-fiance, something that doesn’t please her at all and she doesn’t hesitate to say that. But she will also team up with him to try to understand what happens with all these terrible murders. And while our two heroes face their ancient history and the past they had in common, it will be very difficult for them to deal with what is happening.

I admit that I was really curious to find out why David and Allsun had broken up when we see that they are perfectly made for each other. During the story, we discover a few points, but it is true that I did not expect such events. It was finally really heartbreaking and it is very sad to understand how she managed to go through so many things. David was also fascinating to follow and although it is a little difficult for him to understand what Allsun desires and the reasons for her choices, we see that he could do much for her. And while she tries to resist their former attraction, it is natural for David to be tempted and to abandon himself to it entirely. But that’s not all, because we can also find in several scenes of the novel Jace and Frankie and I must say that I was delighted to see them and to learn what they became later.

I loved how the story was turned and I took a great pleasure to read everything. It was a nice surprise and I’m curious to see what the author had for us in the future. Immortal Hunter is a fast read, just a few hours for me but the ideas are very well found.

Immortal Hunter de Kait Ballenger (VO)

Execution Underground, Tome 2

Thanks to Kait for this nice interview!

—————

Can you present you in a few words?

I’m a full time paranormal romance author, wife, mother to three furry animals (1 dog and 2 cats), and a graduate student about to graduate with an MFA in writing. I have a bachelor’s degree in English. I live in Central FL, but was born and raised in Detroit, MI.

How would you describe the Execution Underground series?

The Execution Underground series is dark paranormal romance, very sexy with lots of action and tension. It focuses on the Rochester division of the Execution Underground, which is an international covert organization of elite men who are trained to be hunters of the supernatural. The hunters of the Execution Underground are protectors of humanity. They keep us safe from the things that go bump in the night.

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

I was interested in writing for a while before I realized I seriously wanted to pursue it as a career. I first realized when I was sitting in a small town in Ecuador called Vilcabamba at a small table outside of an internet café. I was sitting there with a notebook, thinking about the latest story idea I had. I realized then that I wanted to be a writer, if I could be thinking about my stories while on the trip of a lifetime lol. I was in Ecuador for nearly two weeks on a scholarship program from my undergraduate university, because I’m fluent in Spanish, though I’m a non-native speaker.

How many books do you intend to write for the series?

Aside from the prequel novella, Shadow Hunter, which appears in the After Dark anthology with Gena Showalter. I have six book planned tentatively for the series, one for each hunter in the Rochester division.

Was it difficult to write the first book? How long did it take?

Jace’s book, Twilight Hunter, was the first one I wrote. Writing it wasn’t a huge challenge, but editing it to a point in which it was ready to go on submission to the publishing houses was. I started writing it in the fall of 2010. I wrote the first three chapters then, but set it aside for a while. I picked it back up again in April of 2011 and finished it that July. It went on submission in January 2012 and was picked up for publication by HQN in April of 2012.

What can readers expect from the upcoming sequels?

Same sexy romance feel, but all with very different characters and creatures. Each book features one of the hunters as the hero and each hunter has his own specialty of supernatural creature that he fights against, so that allows for a lot of diversity in the series. The next book is Immortal Hunter, which is about David Aronowitz, a demon hunter and exorcist. That releases January 28th, 2014.

Did you need to do a lot of research for your books?

Not a whole lot. I had to learn some about the city of Rochester before I started writing the series (since that’s where it takes place) but other than that I only research small details. The biggest research I’ve done is before I wrote Jace’s book, my husband took me out to the shooting range and taught me how to shoot both pistols and rifles, so I can accurately describe them in the books. I was (and currently am) already a black belt in Tang Soo Do, so I didn’t need to do any research to learn about the fight scenes or combat moves.

Do you have a favorite author? Or a favorite book?

My favorite book series is the Harry Potter series, because I grew up reading those novels and that’s what made me fall in love with reading. I haven’t read any of JK Rowling’s other work though, so I don’t know that I would call her my favorite author. I like so many that I don’t think I could choose one favorite.

Who are some of your influences?

Laurel K Hamilton and JR Ward were probably the biggest influences on my writing, because I admire them both as authors.

Have you already other plans for future series? Or is it top secret?

I have a YA urban fantasy/paranormal series that is going out on submission to the publishing houses soon. The first book is tentatively titled Demon Reincarnate. That’s written under my maiden name though: Kaitlyn Schulz. Aside from the Execution Underground series, I don’t have any other adult paranormal romance series planned at the current moment, but that’s something I will start considering once I’m closer to the end of the E.U series. Right now I’m just getting started with the E.U hunters.

———–

Jace McCannon a une seule loyauté : the Execution Underground.
