Celine’s adventures: Half-Blood by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Celine is a French blogger who writes some fictional reviews about the books she loves the most and they always make me laugh. I hope the humor even if translated is kept. Thanks for her reviews.

Covenant, Book 1

Synopsis: The Hematoi descend from the unions of gods and mortals, and the children of two Hematoi pure bloods have godlike powers. Children of Hematoi and mortals–well, not so much. Half-bloods only have two options: become trained Sentinels who hunt and kill daimons or become servants in the homes of the pures. Seventeen-year-old Alexandria would rather risk her life fighting than waste it scrubbing toilets, but she may end up slumming it anyway. There are several rules that students at the Covenant must follow. Alex has problems with them all, but especially rule #1:Relationships between pures and halfs are forbidden. Unfortunately, she’s crushing hard on the totally hot pure-blood Aiden. But falling for Aiden isn’t her biggest problem–staying alive long enough to graduate the Covenant and become a Sentinel is. If she fails in her duty, she faces a future worse than death or slavery: being turned into a daimon, and being hunted by Aiden. And that would kind of suck.

——————————————————

– Ladies, it’s not ok at all, but not at all, the Redhead-Cerberus says.
We sit cross-legged in a circle around her. The cold ground goes through the thick fabric of my jeans. I should have thought of taking that damn cushion. Johanne sat on her hands, she won’t stay like that for long. To punish us, the henchman of the Gods-of-all-the-stuff-of-the-sea-and-the-land has decreed that today they would take the chairs. We must do penance. I pity Melliane who wears a skirt.
– I remind you that you have a problem, a big problem, and we do not progress. Not at all.
An angelic smile appears on our faces. We drink her words, at least in appearance.
I quietly give a piece of paper to Chat du Cheshire.
MissPendergast can provide us with a new asset, she has a cat as Nini.”
Le Chat is the logistic service of the band. She is responsible for recruiting troops. An expert at finding out what hidden talent is behind our recruits.
Melliane gives me a nudge. She almost did hurt me! I do not take that on account. Le Chat arches an eyebrow, I draw a C.A.T on my lips. Melliane gives me a new elbow. Ouch! I pass my hand over the painful area, but maintain the course of my mission. Le Chat replied by: T.I.G.E.R? I shake my head, saying no. She lets out a long sigh of disappointment.
Throat clearing. A shadow is cast on my face, and an icy stream rushes down my spine. I look up. The Redhead-Cerberus stands before me, hands on hrt hips. Her hair blazes in a halo around her. That may be what Melliane wanted to tell me …
– Well, here is the proof of what I said.
Her tone is sharp as the blade of a knife. I think that I prefer her when she is screaming. I smile weakly and return my head into my shoulders, looking sorry. Melliane sighs beside me.
– I knew that … she whispers.
I want to glare at her, but I still smile. Always keeping an eye on the enemy. This is what is taught in the kung fu manuals I consulted. I have the strange feeling that the cold that freezes my sitting posture is in the process of freezing my smile, but I do not have the time to dwell on the subject, our joyfully-not-so-joyfully-Animator starts again:
– Okay, let’s start with you, Livre-vie, please.
Well, there it is, it’s the moment that we all dread about.
– Hello, my name is Livre-vie, and I’m a books-addict.
The Redhead-Cerberus makes a gesture of exasperation.
– Hurry up Livre-vie, we already know that, otherwise you would not be here.
I know what she wants. She wants me to tell her about Half-Blood by Jennifer L. Armentrout, to admit that I’ve read Volume 1 in one go, despite the fatigue, to confess that this story has haunted me even during my work day, to say my desire to find again with Alex and Aiden on the evening, and about their forbidden love. She waits for me to tell her that I loved the character of Seth, even though I feel that there is something about him, and that the author was perfectly able to create a totally different world of what we usually read in this genre, by reappropriating Greek mythology. She wants me to finally confess that I’m even more addicted to this saga than to the Lux one, which is something. This is what she would like to hear.
New nudge. I’ll have to explain to Melliane that I have osteoarthritis in the elbow, and it really hurts …
I feel the eyes of Ms. Not-Happy on me, Le Chat, Melliane, Roanne, Johanne and Miss Perdengast look at me sympathetically. They know that it will be their turn next, but I read all their support in their eye. We are a team.
– Oh, uh … nothing exceptional this week.
– Are you sure? You know that we should not lie to the Gods! They know when you’re lying … They know everything …
– Yes, nothing exceptional.
I arm myself with courage and I follow.
– Besides, it’s been awhile since I’ve read anything great. I’m so tired, that puff, I fall in a heap in the evening. Like you girls, right?
In one motion, they nod, a large Colgate smile on their lips to attract the attention of Cerberus. I hasten to accompany them.
– It’s winter, that must be why. It turns us into marmots.
My humor doesn’t make her laugh at all. She crushes us with a look.
– Le Chat ?
Le Chat shrugs.
– Me? Nothing either … I work a lot too. And I think I have an overdose of books. I see them all day, you know.
– Melliane?
– Oh me, you know, I made the sales, so I have not had time to read.
I could almost see her nose growing.
– Johanne?
Johanne meets a small hand sign meaning “all the same.” That’s right, it’s not as if her blog did not just celebrate its second anniversary.
– Roanne?
It’s our party tonight …
Roanne sinks into the stole she sewed herself.
– I do not read, I went to the seam.
MissPendergast seems absorbed by a wire sticking out of the zipper of her jacket. I see the workings of her brain screaming “not me, not me …”
The Cerberus purses her lips and mutters a “That will not do it at all, not at all, they will not be happy …”. She walks away a few steps, and we turn back. I hear mumbling.
– We have a problem I can’t get them to talk.
Still sitting cross-legged, I stretch the legs before me without uncrossing, posing the heels on the ground and in a graceful motion, drag my ass to the front to get a little closer to her. I listen.
– Torture? I thought about that… But that will leave marks …
I do not know whether to say that I’m relieved or not … With a movement of the pelvis, I get a little bit closer.
– Make them read a cookbook? I have also thought about tgat, but even Livre-vie would be able to enjoy it. And having cookbooks in the Banned-books Dungeon…
What? Again? The Banned-books Dungeon?
I turn to look at the girls. We have a clue!
– Can I do something for you Livre-vie?
Uh, I forgot to stop myself … My body became independent and had continued to advance, and I’ve just hitten the Cerberus …. Shit …

  1. I heartily agree, lol – torture is never good 🙂 Alas, I am behind on this series, which is why I am surreptitiously kicking myself now. Another great post. I’ve come to look forward to these stories :)) Great job!

  2. Eek, you like it more than the Lux series? I did like the first one, but tere was something about it after that I didn’t like. I do love Greek Mythology and forbidden romance. 😉 Buuuuut, I totally stayed away from these because of the too close similarities to the Vampire Academy series (well, at least the first book.) Glad you loved it though! 😀

  3. Such a hard task master! “The Cerberus purses her lips and mutters a « That will not do it at all, not at all, they will not be happy … ». She walks away a few steps, and we turn back. I hear mumbling.
    – We have a problem…” I feel empty now that I’ve finished the Lux series, which I loved, so I really should start this one. And, Seth has me very curious…
Thanks for the great post – Happy Friday 🙂

  4. How do you come up with the crazy scenarious?! So fun!

When I first heard of this series, I want to grab it because Greek Pantheon! Afterwards I’m more interested in her alien series. As time progressed, I find my taste in YA has also changed. I don’t enjoy YA fantasy as much anymore
