DNF: The Surfer Solution by Cathy Yardley

Synopsis: Allison Robbins needs to relax… or else.

The middle child in a family chock-full of Type A’s, she’s determined to get promoted before she turns thirty. What she doesn’t anticipate: panic attacks that look like heart attacks, just before one of the biggest presentations of her career. Under doctor’s orders Allison has to find a nice, physical hobby.

After a series of unfortunate attempts, she finally settles on the perfect pursuit for a California girl: surfing. She’s even commandeered the services of surf instructor Sean Gilroy — just the guy to teach Allison’s uptight self how to chill. But aside from being unsettlingly cute in a wet suit, Sean seems like the stereotypical surfer: casual, laid-back and entirely certain that things will take care of themselves. In other words, the polar opposite of Allison’s world of stress, coffee and more stress.

Sean Gilroy has never experienced anything like the force of nature that is Allison. Before he knows it, they’re making each other crazy — and making each other hot. But he’s worried that she’s never going to embrace his lifestyle — and that the changes he’d have to make to fit into her life would destroy the core of the person he is.

As he learns to step up, and she learns to hang out, the two of them learn one important thing: sometimes, the last person you expect to fall for is the one person you really need.

Review: I had had this novel for a long time and I wanted to have a good time so I took it out of the back of my TBR pile.

I had already read some good novels by this author and I was curious to see how this one would turn out. However, I have to say that even though I insisted, I couldn’t get hooked on the story or the characters that left me indifferent.

So I preferred to give up.

Résumé : Toute Californienne digne de ce nom sait tenir sur une planche de surf. Sauf moi, Allison Robbins ! Le seul truc sur lequel j’ose tester mon équilibre, ce sont mes stilettos. Normal : mon trip c’est plutôt réunions à rallonge et pause café express. Je ne vous raconte pas le stress ! Jusqu’au jour où j’ai eu une crise d’angoisse en plein milieu d’une présentation. Résultat : mon boss m’a mise au repos forcé et mon médecin m’a prescrit… des séances de surf. Rien de tel pour se détendre, a-t-il assuré. Se détendre ? Facile à dire quand le moniteur est un grand blond aux yeux verts et au physique de demi-dieu ! Sean – c’est le prénom du demi-dieu – a beau être ultra zen, il met en surchauffe tous mes capteurs sensoriels. Pas besoin de vous faire un dessin : je suis amoureuse. A votre avis, est-ce que la reine des plannings serrés et des pronostics de résultats, bref une fille comme moi, a des chances d’intéresser un mec aussi cool que Sean ? En tout cas, je tente ma chance !

Avis : J’avais ce roman depuis longtemps été j’avais envie de passer un bon moment donc je l’ai sorti du fin fond de ma PAL.

J’avais déjà lu de bons romans de cette auteure et j’étais curieuse de voir ce que cela donnait. Pourtant, je dois dire que même si j’ai insisté, je n’ai pas réussi à accrocher à l’histoire ni aux personnages qui m’ont laissée indifférente.

J’ai donc préféré abandonner.

Hot Damned, Book 1

Synopsis: Vampyres don’t exist. They absolutely do not exist.

At least I didn’t think they did ‘til I tried to quit smoking and ended up Undead. Who in the hell did I screw over in a former life that my getting healthy equates with dead?

Now I’m a Vampyre. Yes, we exist whether we want to or not. However, I have to admit, the perks aren’t bad. My girls no longer jiggle, my ass is higher than a kite and the latest Prada keeps finding its way to my wardrobe. On the downside, I’m stuck with an obscenely profane Guardian Angel who looks like Oprah and a Fairy Fighting Coach who’s teaching me to annihilate like the Terminator.

To complicate matters, my libido has increased to Vampyric proportions and my attraction to a hotter than Satan’s underpants killer rogue Vampyre is not only dangerous . . . it’s possibly deadly. For real dead. Permanent death isn’t on my agenda. Avoiding him is my only option. Of course, since he thinks I’m his, it’s easier said than done. Like THAT’S not enough to deal with, all the other Vampyres think I’m some sort of Chosen One.

Holy Hell, if I’m in charge of saving an entire race of blood suckers, the Undead are in for one hell of a ride.

Review: I had read some nice novels by Robyn Peterman, and I realized that I had this novel about my kindle, probably picked up one day when it was free. I don’t read a lot of vampire novels anymore, but I was quite curious to dive into this one.

Astrid didn’t think that by wanting to stop smoking, she would become a vampire and it’s far from being easy. In addition to the arrival of a guardian angel who looks like Oprah, a man who must teach her how to fight and who looks like Arnold Schwarzenegger, a best friend who is much more than she thought and small entities that our heroine considers as her children, Astrid is going to have to deal with a very sexy vampire known as Ethan, but even worse a Chosen One status that she really doesn’t understand!

I had a really good time with this novel. A bit in the Queen Betsy style by MaryJanice Davidson, the author allows us to get carried away in a light story full of vampires, but also of other various creatures. The little creatures were adorable and I was looking forward to learning more about them. And then, I must admit that I wasn’t really expecting such a turn of events at the end, so it was a nice surprise.

Many things were launched and I must say that I’m curious to read the following to see how Ethan and Astrid are going to get out of it!

Hot Damned, Tome 1

Du moins, je ne croyais pas en leur existence jusqu’à ce que j’essaie d’arrêter de fumer et que je me retrouve mort-vivante. Qui diable ai-je arnaqué dans une vie antérieure pour que ma santé équivlet à la mort ?

Maintenant, je suis un Vampyre. Oui, nous existons, que nous le voulions ou non. Cependant, je dois admettre que les avantages sont indéniables. Mes filles ne se trémoussent plus, mon cul est plus haut qu’un cerf-volant et le dernier Prada trouve toujours son chemin jusqu’à ma garde-robe. L’inconvénient, c’est que je suis coincée avec un Ange Gardien obscènement profane qui ressemble à Oprah et un entraîneur de combat fée qui m’apprend à me battre comme le Terminator.

Pour compliquer les choses, ma libido a atteint des proportions vampiriques et mon attirance pour un Vampyre plus sexy que le tueur en sous-vêtements de Satan n’est pas seulement dangereuse… elle est peut-être mortelle. Vraiment mortelle. La mort permanente n’est pas à mon programme. L’éviter est ma seule option. Bien sûr, puisqu’il pense que je suis à lui, c’est plus facile à dire qu’à faire. Comme si ce n’était pas suffisant, tous les autres Vampyres croient que je suis une sorte d’Elue.

Bon sang, si je suis chargée de sauver une race entière de suceurs de sang, les morts-vivants vont avoir droit à un sacré voyage.

Avis : J’avais lu des romans sympas de Robyn Peterman, et je me suis rendu compte que j’avais ce roman sur ma kindle, sûrement récupéré un jour où il était gratuit. Je ne lis plus beaucoup de romans sur les vampires, mais j’étais assez curieuse de me plonger dans celui-ci.

Astrid ne pensait pas qu’en voulant arrêter de fumer, elle deviendrait un vampyre et c’est loin d’être facile. En plus de l’arrivée d’un ange gardien qui ressemble à Oprah, d’un homme qui doit lui apprendre à se battre et qui ressemble à Arnold Schwarzenegger, une meilleure amie qui est bien plus que ce qu’elle pensait et de petites entités que notre héroïne considère comme ses enfants, Astrid va devoir gérer un vampire très sexy connu sous le nom d’Ethan, mais pire encore un statut d’Elue qu’elle ne comprend vraiment pas !

J’ai vraiment passé un très bon moment avec ce roman. Un peu dans le style Queen Betsy de MaryJanice Davidson, l’auteure nous permet de nous emporter dans une histoire légère pleine de vampyres, mais aussi d’autres créatures variées. Les petites créatures étaient adorables et j’attendais avec impatience d’en apprendre plus à leur sujet. Et puis, j’avoue que je ne m’attendais pas vraiment à un tel retournement de situation à la fin, alors c’était vraiment une jolie surprise.

De nombreuses choses ont été lancées et je dois bien dire que je suis curieuse de lire la suite pour voir comment Ethan et Astrid vont s’en sortir !

Synopsis: Word of Abby’s talents reading tarot cards has reached a mob boss who wants her help in some business matters and he doesn’t take no for an answer. When the police seek out her psychic intuition to shed light on a masked man who’s been attacking women, Abby finds herself working both sides of the law on her own, leading her to wonder, why didn’t I see this coming?

Review: I had had a good time with the first volume, and I was curious to discover this second book. I must say that I generally like Victoria Laurie’s novels a lot, so I was looking forward to getting into this one!

Abby doesn’t even have time to create something with Dutch that he’s away for his FBI training. But here’s the thing: she’s really not going to get bored when she has to help the police discovering the identity of a man who seems to be attacking women. However, this is easier said than done, despite her gift. In addition to that, she attracts the attention of the mafia by doing a reading at a wedding, which will have far more important consequences than expected!

I really had a great time once again with this book, and it was a real pleasure to discover and follow Abby once again. Despite her desires, she will find herself in difficult situations and will have to make choices that will completely change the game! I really liked the mix with the mafia or the story with her sister Gemma. As always, I am curious to read more and see what our heroine has in store for us in the future!

Résumé (traduction personnelle) : La rumeur sur les dons d’Abby pour lire des cartes de tarot est parvenue aux oreilles d’un chef de la mafia qui veut son aide dans certaines affaires, et il n’accepte pas un « non » comme réponse. Lorsque la police fait appel à son intuition psychique pour faire la lumière sur un homme masqué qui s’en prend aux femmes, Abby se retrouve à travailler seule des deux côtés de la loi, ce qui l’amène à se demander pourquoi elle ne l’avait pas vu venir.

Avis : J’avais passé un bon moment avec le premier tome, et j’étais curieuse de découvrir ce second opus. Il faut dire que j’apprécie généralement beaucoup les romans de Victoria Laurie, alors j’étais impatiente de me lancer dans celui-ci !

Abby n’a même pas le temps de créer quelque chose avec Dutch qu’il est loin pour sa formation au FBI. Mais voilà, elle ne risque vraiment pas de s’ennuyer quand elle doit aider la police à découvrir l’identité d’un homme qui semble s’en prendre aux femmes. C’est cependant plus facile à dire qu’à faire, malgré son don. En plus de cela, elle attire l’attention de la mafia en faisant une lecture lors d’un mariage, ce qui va avoir des conséquences bien plus importantes que prévues !

J’ai vraiment passé un super moment une fois encore avec ce livre, et c’était un réel plaisir de découvrir et de suivre une fois de plus Abby. Malgré ses désirs, elle va se retrouver dans des situations difficiles et elle devra faire des choix qui changeront complètement la donne ! J’ai vraiment bien aimé le mélange avec la mafia ou encore l’histoire avec sa sœur Gemma. Je suis comme toujours curieuse d’en lire plus et de voir ce que notre héroïne nous réserve pour la suite !

She’ll also need help if she wants to prove her theory that Jane and Paolo were drugged by the real killer. But this case is booby-trapped with pitfalls far more dangerous than mere temptation. And when someone tries to run Finley’s car off the road, she’s got to act quick to find a killer who wants to see her underground . . .

Review: After starting volume 2, going back to volume 1 and finishing this volume 2, I can finally tell you that it is important to read them in order! Yes, yes, yes!

Finley finds herself embroiled in a new case when her best friend Jane arrives home full of blood and tells her that she woke up after a romantic date next to a corpse. She doesn’t remember what happened, and of course, she’s soon accused of murder. Finley and her friends will do everything they can to find out the truth and try to get Jane out of jail (which won’t be easy at all). When danger is approaching and her job is on the line, Finley will have to choose what is most important to her. Luckily for her, she won’t be alone in her research because Liam has been hired to keep her out of trouble and not tarnish the image of the firm she works for.

That was a really nice novel again. We’re learning more about Jane and the past she’s hiding. There is also more Liam (how can we resist him?) and Finley will have to make decisions about Patrick. There are several things I didn’t see coming and it was a real pleasure to discover the author’s ideas. Yes it was a very nice cozy mystery novel and I can’t wait to read more and see what Finley will be getting into for the next volume.
