—————-

Q: Can you introduce yourself in a few words?
A: Hi! I’m Eric. I’m a writer, a nerdy gamer, and a music lover. I pretty much live in my computer chair.
Q: Can you tell us more about your Kat Redding series? And more precisely about Blessed by a Demon’s Mark?
A: I view the Kat Redding series as something of a cross between action/horror and urban fantasy. The first two books focused on Kat getting involved in things far beyond anything she’s experienced before and Blessed by a Demon’s Mark is no different. Things are really starting to pile up on her, pushing her to the breaking point, with the question being whether or not she will collapse under the pressure or find a way to come out on the other side a better person.
Q: Kat has changed a lot through the novels, did you plan that?
A: I always believe that characters come first and think they need to grow, so in a way I planned it, but didn’t plan the exact path she would take. She starts out as such a hard person that she can easily put some people off, but over time, she’s starting to see that there is a difference between being tough and strong versus being cruel. She’s fighting the vampire part of her that wants her to kill and maim and I think by the end of Blessed by a Demon’s Mark, you’ll get an idea if she has a chance to succeed or not.
Q: Where did the idea of Delai come from?
A: The town sort of grew out of nothing. The first drafts of Tainted Night, Tainted Blood had it being just a peaceful little town she goes to to get away from everything, but I soon realized that it was unlikely a place like that could exist in her world. With each draft, Delai changed into something far different than what I originally envisioned. I think it works so much better this way and it gave the Levi character such a bigger role than I’d originally planned, as well as brought in another important character that you’ll be seeing more of in future novels.
Q: Can you tell a little more about your ideas for the fourth book?
A: The fourth book will focus more on the Left Hand while also continuing all of the other story lines from the previous books. There very well might be a major shakeup to Kat’s world, as well as her chance to finally get close to someone…but I won’t spoil anything!
Q: Is it difficult to mix so many creatures in the same novel?
A: Not really. I’ve made sure not to throw in too many things at once. If I want to add a new creature or villain, I make sure there is room for them before doing it. If I can’t give the new creature/villain adequate story time, then they won’t make the cut. I focus so much on the characters, however, the creature type doesn’t really even come into play too much. No matter their monster status, I’m more concerned with how they will interact with Kat and her world.
Q: How do you find your titles? Did you imagine them all when you started the series or do you brainstorm each time?
A: To Walk the Night was the title I slapped on the first book as a working title and it just stuck. I thought it worked well for the book, though I did consider calling it Full Moon Madness since the climax of the novel takes place during the full moon. When I submitted the novel, I had yet to come up with plots for any other books, so I had no title ideas at all. I’ve basically come up with the title for each book after I’ve plotted it out. Right now, the working title for book 4 is Blood from a Silver Cross, but like everything, it is subject to change.
Q: Do you write full time? If no, do you hope to eventually do so?
A: Well, I stay at home and it is the only “work” I do that pays. I spend a large chunk of the day taking care of my son, playing the part of a stay at home dad. My wife is great in that she let me pursue this writing thing without having to get a real job. HA! A lot of people don’t understand, thinking that just makes me a slacker, but I do work as much as I can throughout a day and I think it helps that I don’t have to worry about a day job. I can sit down and write whenever the mood strikes me, allowing me to get far more done than I otherwise might. Hopefully, one day, I will be able to make a decent living off my work. I don’t expect to move into a mansion or anything, but to be able to pay off the college loans would do for a start!
Q: Do your covers represent what is between the pages?
A: I think so. I was thrilled when I saw the covers to all three of the books. Each has gotten progressively better and I think they really do show what kind of book you’re about to read.
Q: What can you tell us about your new e-book, Little David Lost?
A: I’d always wanted to try out the e-book only market, as a sort of experiment. I don’t want to be an e-book author full time, but did want to see if I could pull it off or not. So when Little David Lost came into being and wasn’t picked up by a publisher, I thought it was the perfect book to experiment with! It is a horror novel that has been simmering in the back of my mind for a long time. It’s about a girl, Marybelle Lane, who has been having nightmares all of her life, up until the day her dad died in front of her, seemingly killed by a shadow. The nightmares stopped for a while, but suddenly return. There’s a creepy little rhyme sung by a trio of identical girls, a rotting boy, and a world full of dust and a black storm that brings shrieking creatures with it. I really hope readers like it since it is such a drastic difference from the Kat Redding series.
Q: Is it really different to write a horror story? Do you think you’ll write more books in this genre?
A: It is definitely a different sort of challenge. I wanted the scary scenes to be tense and atmospheric, which meant I really had to pay attention to the pacing of the chapters, of what would really be scary and what would simply be cartoonish. There was a balance there that I had to find so that it hopefully frightens and entertains at the same time. I really enjoy writing that kind of thing, so I do hope that I’ll eventually write a few more horror novels. I have quite a few ideas, all taking place in the same “world” and town. They won’t be books in the same series or anything, but the same characters might pop up here or there and events from other books might be mentioned if they had an impact on the town.
Q: Who is your favorite Kick-Ass Heroine?
A: This was actually a tough one, but I think I’ll have to go with Mercy Thompson. I’ve really enjoyed the Patricia Briggs novels quite a bit and Mercy has had a lot to do with that!
—————

Q: Pouvez-vous vous présenter en quelques mots?
A: Salut!

Blessed by a Demon’s Mark by E.S. Moore

Kat Redding, Book 3

Synopsis: In a job like this, there’s no retirement plan

Kat Redding’s life is dangerous enough when she’s hunting the rogue vampires who prey on Pureblood humans. But now that Kat is thinking of getting out of the killing business, she’s faced with a slew of new problems. Like the demon Beligral, who offers help at an escalating cost, and the werewolf cult with whom she’s entwined professionally and personally. And then there’s Countess Baset—the terrifying vampire who wants Kat to become her personal assassin.

It’s no wonder that Kat has been seeking refuge in the mysterious town known as Delai, a place where she can shed her Lady Death persona and live a life that’s as close to normal as she’s ever known. But even in this haven, something feels askew. Delai is a little too serene. And the more she discovers, the more Kat realizes that the only choice left to her is not whether to do battle, but which side she’ll risk her life to defend…

Review: Since the end of Tainted Night, Tainted Blood, I was really curious to read this third novel. Well, Kat left the city to live in the small town of Dalai, a strange town which we would like to know all the secrets. I also wondered if E.S. Moore would reveal us the truth about Dalai here or if he would keep it secret. But everything will be revealed in due time throughout history.

Kat has to leave Dalai at the beginning of the story, almost thrown out by the Levy’s wife, but he is not really of that opinion and tries everything he can to stop her. But when our heroine wants something, nothing can stop her. She knows that she has to face reality and that abandoning Ethan was not the best thing to do. But she surely does not expect when she returned home that everybody thinks she was dead. Jeremy now lives at her home, watching Ethan; and Baset, the Countess wants her dead for having killed her lover Talia (which is also not the case). Besides, Adrian sends all the time some wolves to look for her without knowing the reason.

I must say that this novel is full of surprises. I didn’t expect so many changes. Kat, who wanted to retire from this life she had until now will end up involved in more problems than she would like. And when I say problems, it’s still not enough, Kat’s life will be totally turned upside down and we really don’t expect that at all. The end was totally surprising as, indeed, it announces great things for the future. Kat is constantly evolving since the first book and it is a pleasure to understand and see her vulnerability here. She has considerably changed, trusting more people that we would have thought and being willing to do anything to protect them.

We finally learn the truth about the town of Dalai and I confess that it was something that I wanted from the beginning of the story. A real surprise and it is true that it was well found. I wonder how Kat is going to face this new challenge. I was also curious to see how the relationship between Kat and Jonathan would evolve, but I must say that I was also surprised by Nathan and I would love to really understand his reactions. It was really different to have so many persons around our heroine and Jeremy is also a character that I learned to appreciate as he will do many things for Ethan and her.

All this to say that this is a great new novel full on amazing events and I can’t wait for more!

Blessed by a Demon’s Mark de E.S. Moore (VO)

Kat Redding, Tome 3

Je me demandais d’ailleurs si E.S.

Blessed by a Demon’s Mark (Kat Redding, 3) – E.S. Moore

In a job like this, there’s no retirement plan

Grimspace (Sirantha Jax, 1) – Ann Aguirre

By all accounts, Sirantha Jax should have burned out years ago…

As the carrier of a rare gene, Jax has the ability to jump ships through grimspace—a talent which cuts into her life expectancy, but makes her a highly prized navigator for the Corp. But then the ship she’s navigating crash-lands, and she’s accused of killing everyone on board. It’s hard for Jax to defend herself: she has no memory of the crash.

Now imprisoned and the subject of a ruthless interrogation, Jax is on the verge of madness. Then a mysterious man breaks into her cell, offering her freedom—for a price. March needs Jax to help his small band of rogue fighters break the Corp monopoly on interstellar travel—and establish a new breed of jumper.

Jax is only good at one thing—grimspace—and it will eventually kill her. So she may as well have some fun in the meantime…

One More Bite (Jar parks, 5) – Jennifer Rardin

It’s Jaz Parks. I’ve already smoked the guy who was the pain in the CIA’s you-know-what for the past few years. But now, in the power vacuum left by the death of Edward “The Raptor”Samos, a struggle for supremacy has begun between his former allies: The Flock, The Valencian Weres and the Coven of Inverness.

The CIA feels the balance must be maintained. So when an agent planted among the Weres discovers a plot to assassinate the Coven’s leader, I and my vampire hottie (and boss), Vayl, are brought in to take out the woman hired to do the deed, a killer who might be as wily and Gifted as ourselves.

So it’s off to the Scottish Highlands for some twisted fun among murderers, demons and half-crazed relatives. Sometimes being a top-secret CIA assassin isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

The Spellmans Strike Again/Les Spellman contre-attaquent (The Spellmans, 4) – Lisa Lutz

At the ripe old age of 32, former wild child Isabel “Izzy” Spellman has finally agreed to take over the family business. Let’s just say the transition won’t be a smooth one. Her first priorities as head of Spellman Investigations are to dig up some dirt on the competition—slippery ex-cop Rick Harkey—and to track down a stolen screenplay called The Snowball Effect. Next, faced with a baffling missing-persons case at the home of an aging millionaire, Izzy hires an actor friend to infiltrate the mansion as an undercover butler. Only he enjoys the role a little too much.

Choosing a Location
by
E.S. Moore
Every story takes place somewhere. It could be a single room, a town, an entire world. Where the story is set can sometimes be as important as the characters. It might even be a character in its own way, growing and changing as the story progresses.
The towns and cities in most of my stories come straight from my head. They may be based a little on what I know, but in general, I make them up. I’d much rather mold a fictional town to my liking than try to adapt a real world place to fit the story. It’s not because I think it’s easier that way; it’s not. I just like having more control. I can blow things up, move things around, and not feel guilty about it later.
Then I started work on the Kat Redding series. For the first time, I went with a real city instead of a made up one. I chose a place I knew relatively well, that had a big enough population to support the story I was trying to tell, but not so big that the characters would get lost in it. I wanted the story to be grounded in the real world to offset all the craziness happening.
I took Columbus, Ohio apart. I kept a few of the locations, like High Street and the Ohio State Campus, and completely reworked them to fit with how I saw the world evolving if there really was a supernatural Uprising. The library that becomes the Luna Cult Den in the story is a real place, but the inside was made to fit with what I needed, not what it really looks like. And, by the way, High Street is nothing like it is in the story. There are a few locations on the street that really are there, but it bears little resemblance to what you’d see if you were to go there now.
In the end, it was about balance. How could I take a city, one that people live in today, and turn it into something familiar, yet so radically different that it’s almost unrecognizable? I wanted people who have visited Columbus or who live there to feel like they are reading about a darker version of their city without me feeling as if I was being restricted by reality. If I needed a mansion or a mall somewhere, I put it there and tried to explain how it came to be there.
It isn’t always easy. There’s always a question as to whether the changes are believable or not. I could have left things as they are and tried to build the world around what is already there.
But really, I couldn’t; not if I wanted the city to grow.
And that’s what I hope it did. If you get a chance to visit, look around, see what is familiar. Maybe in some dark corner, you’ll see something that will remind you of a far darker world, one in which the vampires truly do walk the night.

Choisir un endroit
by
E.S. Moore
Chaque histoire doit prendre place quelque part.

review: I enjoyed the first book of this series as it was more about the action, something that is different from some books we can read today in Urban Fantasy. It’s true that I would have loved to have more developments about the feelings of our characters and my wish has been granted in this second novel. This book has everything I want in a book in this genre.

From the start, I was completely hooked by the E.S. Moore story. We discover a new aspect of the kat’s personality that we didn’t have the chance to see before. Indeed, we will understand that everything isn’t that simple for her and that her way of life gives her many responsibilities she doesn’t really want to have. We therefore begin to see the flaws in her shell little by little. Of course all the characters of the first volume are here for a new investigation more than interesting. Indeed, murders are being committed all overtown and even though everyone suspects that our heroine has become rogue, she has nothing to do with these killings. But she quickly understands that it is in her interest to find out who is responsible for not becoming the next target. I must say that many culprits have gone through my head but I did not expect at all such a revelation, I believe it will be the same for every reader. It is simply unthinkable. But ourheart is breaking for Kat when she understands what is happening, mainly at the end of the book when she is left with only one solution.
I was pleasantly surprised by the new relationships she forgeswith Jonathan, his cult, and well even with Ethan. Our Lady Death shows us a more humanized side of her personality, wanting to have people closer to herwhile keeping the idea that she might be hurt or killed by accepting another person in her circle of trust. We can also finally meet the Ethan’s demon and I confess that since the first bookI was really curious to see him. It was ultimately a good appearance, and we doubt that their troubles are just beginning now.
Many things are initiated here, and I must say that I read this book quite fast, we always want more and when the end finally comes, we only want the third bookto finally understand what will happen next. I was very intrigued by this strange city that seems to knowwhat Kat is, and that contains more secrets than we might think. Plus, the first chapter ofnext book at the end of the novel makes me want to have the rest of the story.
So we discover herean evolving storywith a very good second volume. And I’m impatient to be able to learn more.
