Exile of the Seas by Jeffe Kennedy

The Chronicles of Dasnaria, Book 2

Synopsis: Around the shifting borders of the Twelve Kingdoms, trade and conflict, danger and adventure put every traveler on guard . . . but some have everything to lose.

ESCAPED
Once she was known as Jenna, Imperial Princess of Dasnaria, schooled in graceful dance and comely submission. Until the man her parents married her off to almost killed her with his brutality.

Now, all she knows is that the ship she’s boarded is bound away from her vicious homeland. The warrior woman aboard says Jenna’s skill in dancing might translate into a more lethal ability. Danu’s fighter priestesses will take her in, disguise her as one of their own—and allow her to keep her silence.

But it’s only a matter of time until Jenna’s monster of a husband hunts her down. Her best chance to stay hidden is to hire out as bodyguard to a caravan traveling to a far-off land, home to beasts and people so unfamiliar they seem like part of a fairy tale. But her supposed prowess, in combat is a fraud. And sooner or later, Jenna’s flight will end in battle—or betrayal . . .

Review: I really enjoyed the first volume and I was curious to discover what happened to Jenna after so many events! But now, even if she managed to escape, the problems do not stop there and even far from it.

Discovering a culture that is not hers, Jenna will befriend a priestess who will help her escape her husband. This is how she will discover new lands, things she did not think she would see one day, and the animals she craved to discover one. So many new things for her during this trip. But now, this journey will not be so easy, and her husband did not wait long before looking for her. And this time Jenna will have to choose between running away again or confronting him.

It was a nice second volume even if I have to admit that I have a preference for the first one but also because the action was more present too. It was however very interesting to see the evolution of the young woman, to see her become more assertive and above all more determined in her choices even if her past is still there to pursue her.

New possibilities and a different future are proposed to Jenna who now lives under another identity and I can not wait to discover what the author has in store for the future!

The Chronicles of Dasnaria, Tome 2

Prisoner of the Crown by Jeffe Kennedy

The Chronicles of Dasnaria, Book 1

Synopsis: She was raised to be beautiful, nothing more. And then the rules changed . . .

In icy Dasnaria, rival realm to the Twelve Kingdoms, a woman’s role is to give pleasure, produce heirs, and question nothing. But a plot to overthrow the emperor depends on the fate of his eldest daughter. And the treachery at its heart will change more than one carefully limited life . . .

THE GILDED CAGE
Princess Jenna has been raised in supreme luxury—and ignorance. Within the sweet-scented, golden confines of the palace seraglio, she’s never seen the sun, or a man, or even learned her numbers. But she’s been schooled enough in the paths to a woman’s power. When her betrothal is announced, she’s ready to begin the machinations that her mother promises will take Jenna from ornament to queen.

But the man named as Jenna’s husband is no innocent to be cozened or prince to charm. He’s a monster in human form, and the horrors of life under his thumb are clear within moments of her wedding vows. If Jenna is to live, she must somehow break free—and for one born to a soft prison, the way to cold, hard freedom will be a dangerous path indeed…

Review: Jeffe Kennedy is now offering us a new fantasy series and as I usually enjoy her stories, I could not wait to get into this one.

The author presents us with a world where women are only an incarnated object. Besides, they have pushed the vice to the point where, from birth, they are locked up in a place where they will not leave until the day when they are to be married. It is an extraordinary place where everything is done so that they are as content as possible, thus avoiding that they develop a critical spirit. Everything is done to make them beautiful and docile. They have never met a man other than their brothers or half-brothers when they were very young. Even their father is excluded. But here, Jenna is a little different from the others. She always wanted to go out and discover the world, see what all can not. Unfortunately for her, when she discovers her future husband, he is far from what she had hoped for. It could even be her worst nightmare.

I really liked this first novel. It’s very different from what we usually find. It’s a pretty dark story, quite difficult even if not everything is shown and that the author has kept the most violent scenes for her, leaving us to put words on what she does not say. We discover a heroine who changes, who evolves, who wants a freedom that she can not have. We hope, we cross our fingers very hard so that Jenna finds a solution, so that she gets out of this infernal cycle, that she realizes that there is a whole world to discover.

Yes, it was an interesting first volume and I can not wait to see what will happen to the young woman afterwards.

Prisoner of the Crown de Jeffe Kennedy (VO)

The Chronicles of Dasnaria, Tome 1

Shooting Star by Jeffe Kennedy

Synopsis: Not all desires are shiny and sweet—and the dark ones might change you forever…

It’s not the kind of obsession a tough Army guy can admit to—a jones for Ava, the pretty-princess pop star. Not just her body, the perfect product that sells all those magazines. Her music.

The critics call her human lip gloss, all style and no substance. To Joe Ivanchan, Ava is the exact blend of reality and fantasy that he can tolerate, the closest he’s willing to get to giving his heart after the injury and breakdown that got him out of the service.
But Ava is real. She’s a flesh and blood woman with a publicity machine and an album deadline, along with a whole team of handlers paid to shellac a pristine sheen over a damaged, desperate soul. A woman with fears, with secrets, with desires.

When Joe finds himself in an interview to join her security team as her driver, his instinct is to get away. But the woman behind Ava’s carefully focus-grouped image is even harder to walk away from. The angry needs tormenting her speak to something within Joe. Something empathetic, protective—and primal…

Besides, even a falling star can light up the darkest night.

Review: This is a new romance that Jeffe Kennedy offers us today, something a little different, a little darker, with wounded and difficult characters.

Joe is a former member of the military who was forced to leave after an accident. We do not know exactly what happened and it is rather in the second part of the story that we will learn exactly what happened. The only thing that has helped him so far is Ava, this young pop star who managed to touch him with her music, to the point that at the beginning of the novel he became practically an obsessive fan. The last thing he expected after being able to recover was to be contacted to become the young woman’s bodyguard and driver. Determined to set limits and protect her, he did not expect to discover the secrets that Ava hides, as well as the pain she tries to deal with on a daily basis. Yet together they may be able to accept their differences, to open up to each other and to try to move forward.

It is a story of broken beings, it is not a simple story and we discover little by little what the characters hide. I really enjoyed discovering the real Ava, the one she usually hides and finally, seeing Joe trying to help her, to share with her a piece of his life so that she realizes she’s a lot more than what she thinks.

I was a little afraid at the beginning of the novel with the unhealthy and obsessive side of the hero, but finally, he becomes a normal fan again. I admit that I had trouble seeing when the transition took place, because once in the service of Ava, he manages to set limits that I did not think possible at the outset.

It was a good read and I loved to discover more about the characters, even if we discover with sadness all they have undergone each of their side.

Under His Touch by Jeffe Kennedy

Falling Under, Book 2

Synopsis: Amber Dolors knows better than to get involved with her boss. Devastatingly handsome in his sharp suits and sexy beyond belief, he possesses an air of command that fuels her darkest fantasies. But she’s worked too hard to get this job, and keeping it will lead to a brilliant future. She won’t cross that line—even if his way of giving orders and demanding her best performance gives her delicious warm shivers.

Alexander Knight prides himself on his integrity and self-discipline. After all, he hasn’t risen to the position he enjoys by indulging his whims over ambition. He also isn’t blind. He’s certainly noticed his sharp, young assistant is hot as hell. His self-imposed sexual hermitage doesn’t stop him from watching her. And endlessly fantasizing.

The day Alec’s cool reserve cracks and Amber catches a glimpse of something simmering beneath his apparent indifference is the day everything between them changes. Alec gives her what she’s been looking for sexually—as masterful in the bedroom as he is in the boardroom. He finds himself in the grip of an affair that tests even his boundaries, while Amber’s new role as willing student pushes them both past any consideration other than mutual longing.

Review: I enjoyed the first volume which put forward themes that we don’t usually find in litterature, including the role of women in the video game industry and its consequences. The erotic side was quite well done and light which is why I was curious to get into the second novel.

Unlike the previous volume, we have a rather classic pattern for an erotic BDSM book. Indeed, we find Amber, a girl looking for a man who will satisfy her SM fantasies as it’s not the case for now. The only Problem? The man she wants and who is older than her his also her boss and he is determined not to mix business with pleasure. Still, something is going to appear between them and our heroes will find themselves swept away by a story that will take them unawares.

I was a little less carried away by this novel than with the previous one I confess. Let me explain why … I’m not necessarily a big fan of erotic or BDSM but the first volume brought me something I did not expect with a very interesting context and a good plot. Here, it is a little different because the story revolves around Amber and her desire to develop a special relationship while she does not realize the consequences of certain actions. The story evolves on her relationship with Alexander and her initiation into SM. It’s true that I wanted more, a story behind that could take me, this added to the erotic part. It was an enjoyable and quick read but it still lacked of a stronger plot for me but I think the fans of this genre will appreciate the story and spend a great time.
