Choosing a Location

Every story takes place somewhere. It could be a single room, a town, an entire world. Where the story is set can sometimes be as important as the characters. It might even be a character in its own way, growing and changing as the story progresses.
The towns and cities in most of my stories come straight from my head. They may be based a little on what I know, but in general, I make them up. I’d much rather mold a fictional town to my liking than try to adapt a real world place to fit the story. It’s not because I think it’s easier that way; it’s not. I just like having more control. I can blow things up, move things around, and not feel guilty about it later.
Then I started work on the Kat Redding series. For the first time, I went with a real city instead of a made up one. I chose a place I knew relatively well, that had a big enough population to support the story I was trying to tell, but not so big that the characters would get lost in it. I wanted the story to be grounded in the real world to offset all the craziness happening.
I took Columbus, Ohio apart. I kept a few of the locations, like High Street and the Ohio State Campus, and completely reworked them to fit with how I saw the world evolving if there really was a supernatural Uprising. The library that becomes the Luna Cult Den in the story is a real place, but the inside was made to fit with what I needed, not what it really looks like. And, by the way, High Street is nothing like it is in the story. There are a few locations on the street that really are there, but it bears little resemblance to what you’d see if you were to go there now.
In the end, it was about balance. How could I take a city, one that people live in today, and turn it into something familiar, yet so radically different that it’s almost unrecognizable? I wanted people who have visited Columbus or who live there to feel like they are reading about a darker version of their city without me feeling as if I was being restricted by reality. If I needed a mansion or a mall somewhere, I put it there and tried to explain how it came to be there.
It isn’t always easy. There’s always a question as to whether the changes are believable or not. I could have left things as they are and tried to build the world around what is already there.
But really, I couldn’t; not if I wanted the city to grow.
And that’s what I hope it did. If you get a chance to visit, look around, see what is familiar. Maybe in some dark corner, you’ll see something that will remind you of a far darker world, one in which the vampires truly do walk the night.

Choisir un endroit

Chaque histoire doit prendre place quelque part. Ca peut être une chambre, une ville, un monde entier. L’endroit où est située l’histoire peut parfois être aussi important que les personnages. Ca peut même être un personnage à sa propre manière, évoluant et changeant tandis que l’histoire progresse.
Les villes et villages, dans la plupart de mes histoires, viennent directement de mon esprit. Ils peuvent être un peu basés sur ce que je connais, mais en général, c’est mon propre travail. Je préfère créer une ville fictive que j’aime qu’essayer d’adapter un endroit du monde réel à mon histoire. Ce n’est pas parce que je pense que ce sera plus facile comme ça ; ce n’est pas le cas. J’aime juste avoir plus de contrôle. Je peux détruire les choses, les bouger où je veux et ne pas me sentir coupable par la suite.
Puis j’ai commencé à travailler sur ma série Kat Redding. Pour la première fois, j’ai choisi une vraie ville au lieu d’une inventée. J’ai choisi un endroit relativement connu, qui avait un assez grand nombre d’habitants pour supporter l’histoire que j’essayais de faire, mais pas grosse au point que les personnages puissent s’y perdre. Je voulais une histoire ancrée dans le monde réel pour s’opposer à toutes les choses folles qui s’y passent.
J’ai choisi Columbus, Ohio. J’ai gardé quelques endroits, tels que High Street ou le Ohio State Campus, et je les ai complètement retravaillé pour qu’ils aillent avec la manière dont je voyais le monde évoluer s’il y avait vraiment une recrudescence surnaturelle. La bibliothèque qui est devenue le Den du Luna Cult dans le roman est un endroit réel, mais l’intérieur a été créé pour l’histoire, et donc très différent de ce que c’est réellement. Il y a quelques endroits dans les rues qui sont vraiment là, mais il y a peu de ressemblance avec ce que vous pourriez vraiment voir.
A la fin, c’était surtout un équilibre. Comment pouvais-je prendre une ville, une où les gens vivent aujourd’hui, et la changer en quelque chose que l’on connait, et en même temps si différente que l’on ne la reconnait presque pas ? Je voulais que les personnes qui s’étaient déjà rendues à Colombus ou qui vivent là, se sentent comme s’ils lisaient une version plus sombre de leur ville sans que je sois limité par la réalité. Si j’avais besoin d’un manoir ou d’un centre commercial, je le rajoutais et essayais d’expliquer pourquoi il en était arrivé là.
Ce n’est pas toujours facile. Il y a toujours la question de savoir si les changements seront crédibles ou pas. J’aurais pu laisser les choses comme elles sont et essayer de construire un monde autour de ce que j’avais déjà.
Mais je ne pouvais vraiment pas ; pas si je voulais une ville qui évolue.
Et c’est ce que j’espérais faire. Si vous avez une chance d’y aller, regardez autour de vous, voyez ce qui vous est familier. Peut-être que dans un recoin lugubre, vous verrez quelque chose qui vous fera penser à un monde beaucoup plus sombre, un où les vampires se promènent de nuit.

Et ayant la chance de pouvoir laisser la vengeance derrière elle, Kat doit décider quelles sont ses motivations, que ce soit pour protéger les innocents ou satisfaire sa faim…
Avis : J’avais bien aimé le premier tome de cette série qui était beaucoup plus axé sur l’action ce qui changeait des livres que l’on trouve maintenant en Urban Fantasy. C’est vrai que j’aurais peut-être aimé plus de développement par rapport aux sentiments des personnages et ce deuxième tome a parfaitement exaucé mon souhait. Je pense que tous les petits points que j’aurais aimé voir dans le premier sont apparus cette fois-ci pour mon plus grand plaisir.
Dès le début j’ai été complètement emportée par l’histoire qu’E.S. Moore nous présente ici. On découvre un nouvel aspect de la personnalité de Kat que nous n’avions pas encore eu l’occasion de connaître. En effet, on comprendra que tout n’est pas simple pour elle et que sa façon de vivre lui impose beaucoup de responsabilités qu’elle aimerait ne pas avoir. Tout n’est pas si simple pour elle et on commence alors à apercevoir les failles dans sa carapace. Bien sûr tous les personnages du premier tome sont au rendez-vous pour une nouvelle enquête plus qu’intéressante. En effet, des meurtres sont perpétrés un peu partout en ville et bien que tout le monde suspecte que notre héroïne soit devenue rogue, elle n’y est pour rien dans ces tueries. Mais elle comprend très vite qu’il est dans son intérêt de chercher qui est responsable pour ne pas devenir la prochaine cible. Je dois dire que nombre de coupables me sont passés par la tête mais je ne m’attendais pas du tout à une telle révélation, je crois qu’il en sera pareil pour tout lecteur. C’est tout bonnement impensable. Mais notre cœur se fend pour Kat quand elle comprend ce qu’il se passe et à la fin du livre quand il ne lui reste plus qu’une seule solution.
J’ai été agréablement surprise par les nouveaux liens qu’elle forge avec Jonathan et son culte, de même qu’avec Ethan. Notre Lady Death nous montre un côté plus humanisé de sa personnalité, voulant avoir des personnes plus proches d’elle mais tout en gardant à l’idée qu’elle pourrait bien être blessée voir tuée en acceptant une autre personne dans son cercle de confiance. On pourra aussi enfin rencontrer le démon d’Ethan et j’avoue que depuis le premier tome j’étais vraiment curieuse de  voir ce qu’il en serait et comment il nous apparaîtrait. C’était finalement une bonne apparition, et on se doute que les problèmes ne font maintenant que commencer.
De nombreuses choses sont initiées ici, et je dois dire que le livre se lit tout seul, on en veut toujours plus et quand la fin arrive enfin, on ne veut que le troisième tome pour enfin comprendre comment cela va se passer. J’ai été très intriguée par cette ville si étrange qui semble savoir ce qu’elle est et qui renferme plus de secrets que l’on pourrait le croire. De plus le premier chapitre du prochain tome à la fin du roman nous donne vraiment envie d’avoir la suite de l’histoire.
On découvre donc ici une histoire en constante évolution avec un très bon second tome. Et j’attendrai avec impatience de pouvoir en apprendre plus.

review: I enjoyed the first book of this series as it was more about the action, something that is different from some books we can read today in Urban Fantasy. It’s true that I would have loved to have more developments about the feelings of our characters and my wish has been granted in this second novel. This book has everything I want in a book in this genre.

From the start, I was completely hooked by the E.S. Moore story. We discover a new aspect of the kat’s personality that we didn’t have the chance to see before. Indeed, we will understand that everything isn’t that simple for her and that her way of life gives her many responsibilities she doesn’t really want to have. We therefore begin to see the flaws in her shell little by little. Of course all the characters of the first volume are here for a new investigation more than interesting. Indeed, murders are being committed all overtown and even though everyone suspects that our heroine has become rogue, she has nothing to do with these killings. But she quickly understands that it is in her interest to find out who is responsible for not becoming the next target. I must say that many culprits have gone through my head but I did not expect at all such a revelation, I believe it will be the same for every reader. It is simply unthinkable. But ourheart is breaking for Kat when she understands what is happening, mainly at the end of the book when she is left with only one solution.
I was pleasantly surprised by the new relationships she forgeswith Jonathan, his cult, and well even with Ethan. Our Lady Death shows us a more humanized side of her personality, wanting to have people closer to herwhile keeping the idea that she might be hurt or killed by accepting another person in her circle of trust. We can also finally meet the Ethan’s demon and I confess that since the first bookI was really curious to see him. It was ultimately a good appearance, and we doubt that their troubles are just beginning now.
Many things are initiated here, and I must say that I read this book quite fast, we always want more and when the end finally comes, we only want the third bookto finally understand what will happen next. I was very intrigued by this strange city that seems to knowwhat Kat is, and that contains more secrets than we might think. Plus, the first chapter ofnext book at the end of the novel makes me want to have the rest of the story.
So we discover herean evolving storywith a very good second volume. And I’m impatient to be able to learn more.
