All Fixed Up by Linda Grimes

In a Fix, Book 4

Synopsis: Ciel Halligan, aura adaptor extraordinaire, has a lot of experience filling in for her clients–as them. A rare genetic quirk gives her the ability to absorb human energy and project it back out in a flawless imitation. She’s hard at work, posing as a well-known and celebrated astronaut, about to make a stunning announcement on behalf of the space program…when the photographer documenting the job sees right through her aura. Worse, it soon becomes apparent that he not only knows Ciel’s not who she’s supposed to be, but means her harm.

When Ciel’s elderly Aunt Helen—also an aura adaptor—is murdered in Central Park, and the same photographer shows up at the funeral, Ciel starts to feel even more exposed. Then more adaptors are killed in the same way, and she becomes terrified her friends and family are being systematically exterminated … and it’s starting to look like she’s the ultimate target. She turns to Billy Doyle, her best-friend-turned-boyfriend, for help, but when an unexpected crisis causes him to take off without a word, she’s left to rely on her not-so-former crush, CIA agent Mark Fielding.

Staying alive, keeping control of her romantic life, and unraveling the mystery of why adaptors are being pursued becomes a harder balancing act than ever in this new Ciel Halligan adventure from Linda Grimes.

Review: How to resist each new novel by Linda Grimes? This is something impossible and I wait for every story with great anticipation every time! I must say that the author always presents humorous stories and, of course, full of action at the same time! And how not to want to know more about these auras adapters? Right?

We thus find our dear Ciel facing some new adventures and I must say that she goes through many things in this fourth installment. Indeed, it appears that her first job for Mark, a work where she should replace an astronaut announcing a new original enough space program, our heroine faces a photographer who knows that she is not what she seems to appear. How can he be aware of that? And when her aunt and a friend of the family are killed, all are wondering what exactly is going on! We suspect that the great photographer did something, especially when we have many revelations but it’s hard to understand why. Ciel is going to start in a race against time to try to understand who is trying to take them down before other family members or friends are affected. Well I must say that she herself becomes a more than potential target and hopes to emerge unscathed. It was a very interesting survey and I admit that I was curious to understand what exactly was going on. I did not expect at all to such disclosures at the end of the story and I did not once link all this. Everything was really well found!

But that’s not all … oh no, because of course we also find our dear characters, Billy and Mark (and the family as well). We learn quickly enough in history that Laura, the sister of Ciel is pregnant (very good news by the way) but our heroine wonders if she is not herself pregnant and this is where begins an equally fascinating story! I was really eager to know the verdict on that and to see if her family would understand what was going on by seeing her actions. We then found our adapter in rather crazy situations, sad ones too but we look forward to see how she will come out of it all. I really loved this part of the story, seeing Mark and Billy reactions, good or not and finally attending what they are willing to do for her. I suspected a bit of the answer but I confess that Linda Grimes perfectly manages to lead us by the nose!

In any case, I had once again a great time with this story and I’m really looking forward as always to read more!

All Fixed Up de Linda Grimes (VO)

In a Fix, Tome 4

The Big Fix by Linda Grimes

In a Fix, Book 3

Synopsis: Aura adaptor extraordinaire Ciel Halligan, who uses her chameleon-like abilities to fix her clients’ problems—as them—is filling in on set for action superstar Jackson Gunn, whose snake phobia is standing in the way of his completing his latest mega-millions Hollywood blockbuster. There’s only one thing Jack fears more than snakes, and that’s the possibility of his fans finding out he screams at the sight of one. Going from hero to laughing stock isn’t part of his career plan.

Seems like a simple enough job to Ciel, who doesn’t particularly like snakes, but figures she can tolerate an afternoon with them, for the right price—which Jack is offering, and then some. What she doesn’t count on is finding out that while she was busy wrangling snakes for him, his wife was busy getting killed. When Ciel goes to break the sad news to the star, she finds out Jack was AWOL from her client hideaway at the time of the murder.

Ciel begins to suspect Jack’s phobia was phony, and that he only hired her to provide him with an alibi—but if she goes to the police, she’ll have to explain how she knows he wasn’t really on set. Up against a wall, Ciel calls on her best-friend-turned-love-interest Billy, and her not-so-ex-crush Mark, to help her set up the sting of a lifetime.

Review: I looked forward to the release of this volume, which finally took a long time to arrive. The covers have also completely changed, giving a new look to the series. Personally, this doesn’t really change anything for me … I already loved the series and this only continues with this new novel. I was ecstatic to receive an ARC and I must say that as soon as it arrived, I threw myself on it.

So we discover Ciel, assigned to a new job that Billy found for her, and this time she must turn herself into a big movie star who is afraid of snakes. It’s a pretty simple mission globally, except that the wife of the actor is murdered at the same time when Jack, hidden at Ciel’s ranch, also disappears. What has happened? Is Jack the murderer? Is the sister of the victim guilty as everyone thinks? Finding herself in a very difficult situation, our adaptor is determined to understand exactly what happened, not wishing to send an innocent in prison. Yet the answers to her questions remain far from straightforward but we are following with great pleasure that investigation with her but also with Mark and Billy. In addition to this story we will also have the introduction and marriage of Lara and Thomas, something that was pretty funny I must say, especially when you see the whole organization and the unsuccessful dodges attempts from Ciel. Of course, I’m sure you do not expect it, but we also see the evolution of the relationship between Ciel and Billy, which is not always rosy, maily with the Mark’s interventions over their relationship.

As I said, I loved the novel again. Ciel’s Adventures are always a pleasure to follow and I was eager to discover everything. It’s also true that once again, it is very difficult to get to the end and telling ourselves that we will once again have to wait to have more. Yes … how am I going to do? But back a little more to the characters. Ciel understands that she must actually come to a conclusion with the person of her choice, but it’s not simple. Yet her relationship with Billy affects us a lot, and I was curious to see how far it would make them go. They have their ups and downs like everyone else and some events we really break our heart in fact. However, they form in any case a lovely couple together and they try to face together the obstacles even if they have trouble managing all the feelings and consequences that go with all that. With the marriage we find all the characters of the two families with great pleasure and I hope that we’ll have the opportunity to see a little more Billy’s sisters who seem pretty interesting.

So yes a lot of things here and as I said I had a great time with the story. I can only recommend the series if you fancy a nice moment, all complemented by zany situations and colorful characters and of course exciting plots.

The Big Fix de Linda Grimes (VO)

In a Fix, Tome 3

Interview ~ Linda Grimes & Giveaway/Concours

We’re very happy today to Welcome Linda Grimes on the blog. Her last novel The Big Fix, the third book in her In a Fix series is out there this month. If you don’t know about this series yet, I can only recommend it to you! Thanks to her for this post.

————–

Hi, All! Good to see you again.

It’s always a pleasure to visit. France is lovely this time of year, and to think, I didn’t even need a passport to get here.

Since Melliane has interviewed me a few times before, I thought it would be fun to do something different this time—I’m going to interview Ciel Halligan, aura adaptor extraordinaire, for you!

For those of you who don’t know Ciel yet, she’s the main character in the urban fantasy series I write for Tor Books. She’s an “aura adaptor”—a person with a genetic quirk that enables her to change her appearance to look like someone else. She uses her ability to step into her clients’ lives and fix their problems for them. For a price, naturally. A girl has to eat.

If you’re curious about how Ciel got her start in the fixing biz, you can find out in PRE-FIX, a short story available in digital format from Amazon (Kindle) and Barnes and Noble (NOOK), as well as most places e-books are sold. Best of all? It’s cheap! (Um, in the “inexpensive” sense, not the “low class” sense. Just thought I clear that up.)

And now, on with the interview:

Linda: First off, tell me how you like working for me. It’s fun, huh?

Ciel: Me working for you? Lady, you’re just the transcriptionist. I’m the one telling the stories.

Linda: *Clears throat uncomfortably* You do realize you’re my creation, right?

Ciel: Listen, I may have started out as a figment of your fertile imagination, but I’ve evolved.

Linda: Be that as it may, I am still in the driver’s seat.

Ciel: Oh, really? Let me ask you something. Do I do everything you tell me to? Does Billy? Does Mark?

Linda: Well, no, not exactly. In fact, sometimes I think you all go off on tangents just to annoy me.

Ciel: Speaking of annoying, what’s up with that scene you threw at us in THE BIG FIX? You know which one I mean. The one that inspired a certain tweet from our editor.

Linda: You mean when she tweeted “Working on the latest in @linda_grimes’ Ciel Halligan series and I cannot even BELIEVE what I just read …”?

Ciel: Yeah. That one. Geez. Did you really have to go there?

Linda: Hey, don’t forget the rest of the tweet: “God I love these books. And my job.” You should be thrilled to get a reaction like that!

Ciel: It’s not our editor’s reaction I’m complaining about. It’s Billy’s. And Mark’s. Do you realize how much trouble I got into over that scene?

Linda: Well, yeah. I kind of do. Being as I’m the one who wrote it and all …

Ciel: Transcribed it. Heck, you just lit the fuse and left me to straighten out the whole situation. You’re good at that, aren’t you? A regular troublemaker.

Linda: *buffs nails on shirt* I do try.

Ciel: *rolls eyes*

Linda: Hey, if nothing interesting ever happened, nobody would read the books! Besides, I don’t see why you’re complaining. I mean those are two very hot guys, and you got to—

Ciel: Shhh. For Pete’s sake, Linda. Spoilers!

Linda: Oh, yeah. Right. What I mean to say is, there are plenty of people out there who wouldn’t mind borrowing your talent and stepping into your life for few days. If you get my drift.

Ciel: Yeah? Well, sorry. My talent is nontransferable. Besides, I can fix my own problems, thank you very much. I’m a facilitator—it’s what I do.

Linda: Fixer fix thyself, huh? Yeah, how’s that working out for you? *rubs hands together gleefully*

Ciel: *smirks* Pretty well, considering all the plot bombs you throw at me. Anyone ever tell you you’re one evil writer?

Linda: *grins innocently* Hey, who gave you a pony?

Ciel: Eeyore? Speaking of evil, that nasty little—

Linda: Ah-ah-ah. Remember, no spoilers!

Ciel: *sighs* Well, at least I’ve managed to stay ahead of your diabolical mind so far.

Linda: Yeah? Just wait until the next book! Ciel? Ciel … hey where are you going? Come back here!

Oh, well. Ciel’s always been, um, difficult to direct. I can’t think where she gets that from …

Melliane, thank you again for inviting me back. It’s been loads of fun, as usual. J

————–

Ciel: Retranscrit.

Linda: Oui ? Attends seulement le prochain roman ! Ciel ? Ciel… hey, où vas-tu ? Reviens ici !

Interview – Linda Grimes & Concours/Giveaway (+traduction)

Welcome to Lina Grimes the author of the Ciel Halligan series. Thanks to her for answering our questions.

——-

Can you present yourself in a few words?

Just another martini-drinking wordsmith who loves to make readers laugh.

I have seen on your blog that you taught English for a time. What made you decide to write a novel?

Most of my students only read when they were threatened with bodily harm. Isn’t that enough reason to want to do something else? *grin*

I used to be an actress, too, until I realized I’m too introverted by nature to be totally comfortable on the stage. Writing novels is a great compromise—I can “perform” on the page. Bonus: Not only do I get to “direct,” I also get to play all the parts.

What kind of books do you read? Do you read other books when you are writing? Or not for fear of being influenced?

All kinds! Romances, mysteries, science fiction, urban fantasy, nonfiction (especially anything related to science—really, I’m a big nerd). I don’t tend to read a lot while I’m approaching a deadline, mainly because I don’t have time.

I don’t think writers can help but be influenced by what they read, and that’s probably a good thing. Ideally, if you read widely, and in many genres, all the influences mix up into a great new blend that’s all your own. It’s like cooking—if you give a bunch of chefs the same ingredients, they’ll each come up with a different recipe.

What do you love most about writing urban fantasy? Any other genre that appeals to you?

Urban fantasy gives my imagination the freedom to run where it wants. I also love UF readers—they’re some of the most responsive and dedicated out there.

Paranormal suspense appeals to me, too. I’m working on one now (in between Ciel Halligan books) that I’m hoping might amount to something. It’s a bit darker, not light and funny like readers are used to from me. We’ll see how it goes. Might have to publish it under a different name so any die-hard Ciel fans don’t wind up thinking WTF?!

What are you working on now? Will there be a next Ciel Halligan book? And if so, what can we expect?

The third Ciel Halligan book (THE BIG FIX) will be released in Spring 2015 (sometime in May, as it sits now). You can expect Ciel to get into even more trouble, this time in Hollywood. Billy and Mark are, of course, still complicating her personal life. (We should all have such problems, right?)

I’m currently drafting the fourth Ciel Halligan book (working title: FIXER UPPER, but that’s subject to change). After that, who knows?

Ciel is a colorful character who is able to end up in funny situations, is she like you?

Well, she’s younger than I am, and a lot shorter. 😉 I do like to fix other people’s problems for them, so I suppose we have that in common. But, on the whole, my lifestyle is a lot less, um, adventurous than Ciel’s. Thank God!

The 2 male characters are very interesting. A choice seems really difficult. Can you tell us a little more (for the persons who don’t know the series yet) about them?

It is a tough choice for Ciel—I think that’s what keeps it interesting.

Billy is her best “frenemy” from the time they were toddlers, who suddenly becomes a very real (not to mention hot) possibility as a love interest.

Mark is her big brother’s best friend, and Ciel’s crush from the time she met him when she was thirteen. He’s the embodiment of her adolescent fantasies. But now that he might actually be interested in her as a woman and not just a surrogate kid sister, will the real man live up to her fantasies?

Confusing, to say the least. But exciting? I hope so.

If the series should be adapted for film, which actors would you like to see play your characters?

That’s a tough one for me, because no one actor is exactly like Ciel, Billy, or Mark. The best I can do is offer up some “types.”

Ciel: a young Hannah Spearritt or Michelle Williams. Or maybe Britt Robertson—she’s young enough—if she’d be willing to cut her hair.

Hannah Spearritt

Billy: Ian Somerhalder or Matt Bomer, with maybe a touch of Callum Blue thrown in.

somerhalder young hollywood 01

Mark: a short-haired Charlie Hunnam or a young (and alive) Steve McQueen.

Outside of your characters, who is your favorite heroine? And who is your favorite hero?

Hands down, my favorite heroine ever is Claire Beauchamp Randall Fraser, from Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander. She’s strong, pragmatic, independent, compassionate, opinionated…I could go on, but you get the idea. My favorite hero is from the same series of books: Jamie Fraser, the epitome of an eighteenth century highland Scot. I am beyond excited about the new STARZ TV series!

Ciel is a human chameleon, she can adapt her aura into an exact copy of another person. I find it quite unique. How did you come up with the inspiration? What appeals to you in the aura adaptors?

It sounds odd, but Ciel just showed up that way. When she appeared in my head, I knew she had this ability.

As for what appeals to me…well, who wouldn’t like to be able to change appearances in the blink of an eye? I think that would be so cool! Especially when I’m having a bad hair day.

If you had Ciel’s power for one day and could be the copy of someone, who would that be (and what would you do)? Queen Elizabeth? 😉

Ha-ha! No, I believe I’ll leave the Queen to Billy and Ciel. Personally, I wouldn’t mind filling for Deborra-Lee Furness (who happens to be Hugh Jackman’s wife) for a day. I’ll leave what I would do to your imagination. 😉

The world is about to end and you have to assemble your perfect apocalypse team with five fictional characters – who would that be?

Oh, good question! Hmm. Let’s see …

1. Well, Mark Fielding (my Mark from the Ciel Halligan books, that is). Because, hey, he’s a kick-ass CIA spook who can look like anyone. That would be handy in an apocalypse. Plus, he’s hot.

2. Billy (yes, my Billy) because see above. And he’s funny. If the world is ending, you might as well exit laughing. Plus, he’s hot.

3. Thor. Because come on, a Norse god has got to be helpful when your world is crumbling. When worse comes to worse, he could always take me back to his home world. Plus, he’s hot.

4. Loki. Because maybe a trickster could con our way out of the apocalypse somehow. Plus, he’s hot. (Are you sensing a theme here?)

5. Harry Potter. Because, hey, anyone who can defeat Voldemort shouldn’t have any trouble with a trifling little apocalypse. Plus…well, he’s too you for me to consider hot. Guess I’ll just have to keep the others entertained while Harry saves the world. 😉

(You may be wondering why I didn’t choose Ciel. If Ciel is around, why would Mark or Billy pay any attention to me? Duh.)

Thank you for inviting me back to your fantastic website!

Ciel Halligan, Book 1

Synopsis: The start of an original new urban fantasy series starring human chameleon Ciel HalliganSnagging a marriage proposal for her client while on an all-expenses-paid vacation should be a simple job for Ciel Halligan, aura adaptor extraordinaire. A kind of human chameleon, she’s able to take on her clients’ appearances and slip seamlessly into their lives, solving any sticky problems they don’t want to deal with themselves. No fuss, no muss. Big paycheck.

This particular assignment is pretty enjoyable… that is, until Ciel’s island resort bungalow is blown to smithereens and her client’s about-to-be-fiancé is snatched by modern-day Vikings. For some reason, Ciel begins to suspect that getting the ring is going to be a tad more difficult than originally anticipated.

Going from romance to rescue requires some serious gear-shifting, as well as a little backup. Her best friend, Billy, and Mark, the CIA agent she’s been crushing on for years—both skilled adaptors—step in to help, but their priority is, annoyingly, keeping her safe. Before long, Ciel is dedicating more energy to escaping their watchful eyes than she is to saving her client’s intended.

Suddenly, facing down a horde of Vikings feels like the least of her problems.

Ciel Halligan, book 2

Synopsis: The second installment of the original urban fantasy series starring human chameleon Ciel Halligan

Ciel Halligan, an aura adaptor with a chameleon-like ability to step into the lives of her clients and fix their problems for them — as them — is working a job at the National Zoo with her boyfriend, Billy, and his ten-year-old sister, Molly. It’s supposed to be a quick fix, giving her time to decide if it’s wise to pursue the romantic relationship her charming scoundrel of a best friend wants, or if she should give Mark, the CIA spook she’s crushed on since hormones first rattled her pubescent brain, a chance to step up to the plate.

Molly has already begun to show signs of being an adaptor herself. She’s young for it, but she’s always been precocious, so it’s not impossible. What is impossible is her taking on the form of the baby orangutan she touches — adaptors can only project human auras. Until now, apparently. Worse, Molly is stuck in ape form. She can’t change herself back.

Escaping from the zoo with their new baby orang, Ciel and Billy head for NYC and the only person they know can help: Ciel’s brother James, a non-adaptor scientist who’s determined to crack the aura adaptor genetic code. But when Billy winds up in jail, accused of attempted murder, Ciel begins to suspect Molly’s unusual adapting ability is more than just a fluke. Who’s been experimenting on Molly, and what do they hope to gain? And will Ciel survive to find out?

Quick Fix by Linda Grimes

In a Fix, book 2

Review: I really really loved the first novel and waiting a year to read the second novel has been veeeeeery long. I was so impatient to find again Ciel and the whole gang. I must say that the novel has everything: great humor, people with extraordinary powers, and some completely offset situations. So I’m sure you can wonder it, it’s an enjoyable book.

Ciel is up with a job that seems simple, and more than that, she is accompanied by Billy and Molly so what could happen? But she surely did not expect that this new job would lead her that far. Especially when Molly becomes an orangutan after touching one in the zoo. It’s already strange that she can do that that early but turning into animals is another matter. It must be said that no adapter has ever managed to get to an animal form and it raises many questions, especially when Molly can not turn back. Big problem, especially with the big party that the Ciel and Billy’s parents are holding… And what is the solution? Well, doing everything in secret! But things will change when on top of that, Billy is accused of shooting Laura, a friend of Marc.

I loved this novel as much as the first one! Linda Grimes is very talented and it is a pleasure to read her work. What more could we ask for than having all the characters we met in the first volume? I was eager to see how the story between Billy and Ciel would evolve especially with Marc in the table and I loved seeing what happened between them. Billy and Ciel are really cute together and I loved their moments. I must say that I had a lot of questions about Marc and I wanted to know exactly what he wanted. And of course my heart balances the two of them, although Billy is also gaining a lot of ground for us and for Ciel. I want anyway with curiosity to see more of their relationship in the third volume. I must say they both have very strong personality and we understand all the Ciel’s doubts. But we also meet many other characters including the family of our two lovers and I really enjoyed learning more about them all. Molly is such a sweet character and I loved her here. Okay she spends most of her time in the form of an orangutan but she was really fun… well she has her moments. I loved the idea and she managed to do so much despite her small change. I hope we’ll be able to meet her again soon, because despite her young age, she manages to take a very important place in the story. So of course I also have to talk about Ciel. She is always funny, and has a special talent for getting into some completely incredible situations. It must be said that her association with Billy is known to attract problems does not help either. He is also very good to tickle the jealousy of our young heroine and I must say that the consequences are really worth it! But it’s true that she did not need anyone to make a very bad choice, she is very good at do it alone.

Finally you can see, it’s a wonderful surprise and In a Fix is definitely becoming one of my favorite series. It will be very difficult to wait for the third book! If you’re not convinced, wait to discover Marc, Billy , Sky and Molly, you ‘re gonna love them all. This is an explosive mix, crazy and just awesome! But that’s not all, you will love the original Linda Grimes ideas. Quick fix is a must have!
