Sky Pirates by Liesel Schwarz

The Chronicles of Light and Shadow, Book 3

Synopsis: Following A Conspiracy of Alchemists and A Clockwork Heart, Sky Pirates is the third book of the Chronicles of Light and Shadow series, starring the spunky dirigible pilot Elle Chance and the handsome warlock Marsh. For urban fantasy fans and readers of Gail Carriger’s Changeless and Cherie Priest’s Boneshaker, a fun, fast-paced, action-packed new historical fantasy adventure series starring vampires, fairies, and the unforgettable heroine, Elle Chance.

With her husband, Hugh Marsh, missing in the netherworld and presumed dead, Elle Chance loses herself in the task at hand: piloting the airship Water Lily on commissions across the globe. But as it turns out, her beloved is very much alive—the once-powerful warlock reduced to a wraith. When Water Lily is threatened by pirates, Elle will have to channel all her power as the Oracle—the keeper of the barrier between the two Realms—to try to save what she loves most. As the dark forces of Shadow converge around her, Elle must find a way to breach the curse that binds Marsh. But once released, will Marsh return to her—or is their love destined to die so that he can live?

Review: The first two novels in the series were both great and I was curious about this third installment. Well I must say that I do not remember a lot of things about the end of the previous volume, and I was a little anxious at the beginning of the story, however, everything finally came back pretty fast.

The end of the previous volume had left Elle and Hugh in a rather delicate situation. Oh yes, because Hugh has disappeared without a trace and Chance must now try to find out what she wants to do with her life. But our heroine is not a woman to be pushed and while returning from a mission with an archaeologist, they are both attacked by Logan Dashwood, a character previously discovered and who is determined to teach her a lesson. But nothing goes as planned and the doctor is killed as well as some crew members. Enclosed by Logan on his airship, Elle will have no choice but to agree to participate in the life of the crew while waiting to find a way to escape. But it’s not only that because a hellhound is after her, a price is on her head, and Patrice is determined to recover her whatever it might cost. But Elle has a mission, and she wants to find a lost temple to find the solution that can save her husband. But nothing will happen as planned, and Logan could also complicate matters.

I had a great time with the novel. It’s pretty sad to see the situation in which Elle is found. She does not know how to handle everything and whatever she does, people around her die and the situation only gets worse each time. But her purpose is well defined and whatever happens it is essential that she reaches her answers. Yet it also hurt my heart to see that she is lost in her life, she does not know what she will become and has the impression of having already lost everything. We do not see a lot Hugh here, even if he made a few appearances but it certainly that he still cares about the young woman and hopes she will leave him behind. And then we have … Logan, the captain pirate who kidnaps her. Ah, it’s difficult at first to appreciate him and yet he takes a place in our heart gradually. Despite his status as a pirate, he is courageous, fair and always tries to do the best. He knows that our heroine is a walking danger, but he will always be there for her, even if he is taken several times in fairly complicated situations. In all cases, it is true that I have succumbed to the charm of this pirate, but between him and Hugh, I’m curious to see what she will do. All sounds very complicated, but we must say that our heroine is accustomed to difficult situations, and the end of the novel puts her in a very difficult position with respect to her future. I can not wait to see what happens afterwards.

I think this volume was a little above the other and all really intrigued me. I was very curious to see what would happen and the author has presented here some very nice ideas. It’s always interesting to follow the Elle’s adventures and I’m curious to learn more. A new good novel.

Sky Pirates de Liesel Schwarz (VO)

The Chronicles of Light and Shadow, Tome 3

A Clockwork Heart by Liesel Schwarz

The Chronicles of Light and Shadow, Book 2

Synopsis: FOR BETTER OR CURSE. That might as well have been the wedding vow of Elle Chance and her new husband, the ex-Warlock Hugh Marsh in the second book of this edgy new series that transforms elements of urban fantasy, historical adventure, and paranormal romance into storytelling magic.

As Elle devotes herself to her duties as the Oracle—who alone has the power to keep the dark designs of Shadow at bay—Marsh finds himself missing the excitement of his former life as a Warlock. So when Commissioner Willoughby of the London Metropolitan police seeks his help in solving a magical mystery, Marsh is only too happy to oblige. But in doing so, Marsh loses his heart . . . literally.

In place of the flesh-and-blood organ is a clockwork device—a device that makes Marsh a kind of zombie. Nor is he the only one. A plague of clockwork zombies is afflicting London, sowing panic and whispers of revolution. Now Elle must join forces with her husband’s old friend, the Nightwalker Loisa Beladodia, to track down Marsh’s heart and restore it to his chest before time runs out.

Review: I liked the first volume of this steampunk series and I was curious to see what would happen with the second one. It must be said that Elle has now accepted her destiny, but it is so far from what she wanted … However, she continues her life alongside her husband Marsh. But this life is not what she dreamed of and the obligations make her want to fly and control her vessels to get away from it all. Yet she is not the only one who made sacrifices and our young heroine does not seem to realize that her husband has done a lot more than she seems to see. He gave up everything for her and he now finds himself married to a woman who never stays with him, and with a life routine eventually settled. But everything will change when to assist the police he finds himself trapped by a strange creature and turned into a kind of zombie. Although Elle is determined to fix things, to find and save him, but can she really do that?

I had a little hard to get into the story at the beginning of the novel, but I confess that after the first part I was really curious to see what would happen. I must say that I was very intrigued by this new evil called La Dame Blanche and I really wanted to see how far she was willing to go. It was also very sad to see our two main characters with such feelings, trying to understand each other in vain and yet loving the other unconditionally. We can understand the behavior of our heroine but it is true that our heart aches for her husband. She did not realize what she is doing and only thinks of her own person. Of course, she will evolve in the novel, understanding the mistakes she made in the hope that it is not too late for her to try to fix it.

There are also all the characters that we had the pleasure to discover in the previous volume, as her father, the Professor; Loisa, our beloved vampire; Adele our little fairy and Patrice … but many others as well. I confess that I am very curious to find out more about Old Jack because it is a new character more than intriguing. But I am convinced that after such a novel we’ll have the opportunity to meet him soon. The end of the book totally surprised me, I did not expect such a direction and I admit that I was really sad to see how it all would end. I am especially curious to see how everything is going to be resolved now. It was an enjoyable read and I will wait to read the next Elle’s adventures to see how she will solve her many problems and threats looming in the dark.

A Clockwork Heart de Liesel Schwarz (VO)

The Chronicles of Light and Shadow, Tome 2

A Conspiracy of Alchemists by Liesel Schwarz

Chronicles of Light and Shadow, Book 1

Synopsis: LEAVE IT TO CHANCE. Eleanor “Elle” Chance, that is—the intrepid heroine of this edgy new series that transforms elements of urban fantasy, historical adventure, and paranormal romance into pure storytelling gold.

It is 1903, and the world is divided between light and shadow. On the side of light is a wondrous science that has transformed everyday life by harnessing magical energies to ingenious new technologies. But each advance of science has come at the expense of shadow—the traditional realm of the supernatural.

Now two ancient powers are preparing to strike back. Blood-sucking immortal Nightwalkers and their spellcasting Alchemist allies have a plan to cover the whole world in shadow. All they require is the sacrifice of a certain young woman whose past conceals a dangerous secret.

But when they come after Elle, they get more than they bargained for. This enterprising young woman, the daughter of a scientific genius, has reserves of bravery and determination that even she scarcely suspects. Now she is about to meet her match in more ways than one: a handsome yet infuriating Warlock named Hugh Marsh, whose agenda is as suspect as his charms are annoyingly irresistible.

Review: I was curious by this novel, alchemists, magic, a tough heroine and Paris! Well, okay, I have just seen that with the cover. And even if we only spend a short time in the beautiful city, it is always a pleasure to read more about it. I also like the novels from the 1900s, all this mixed with steampunk and magical creatures, it is always fascinating.

However, I had some problems at the beginning of the novel … In fact, it took me a few chapters before really getting into the story. I found this a bit too soft or not enough action to really interest me. But once left France, and when we discover the Elle’s life in England, I was immediately intrigued by all the events. Everything happens, in fact, very quickly from that point and we’re curious about the following chapter. She is a young woman ahead of her time, she is beautiful, courageous, independent, and has no intention to let a man tell her what she has to do. So when Hugh Marsh takes her under his protection after an attack, this is very far from the taste of our heroine and she makes him understand that at every moment. But after battling with him, she realized that for her missing father, he is her last hope. They will then travel together in many places, letting us know the reason behind the Marsh’s interest for this young woman. He knows many secrets about her that will be revealed in due time throughout the novel. But there is also something more than that and she is far from accepting the destiny they all chose for her. A destiny far from what she had imagined and which interests many people. We will understand that for some persons, appearances are very deceiving, and it is difficult to know where our trust should remain.

We’re quickly intrigued by Elle and about her power. However, we must move forward in the story to understand what is happening. I was quite surprised when I learned the truth, but the author brings us the revelations at the perfect time. Marsh is also a very mysterious man, and it is difficult to identify him and understand his feelings for our heroine. And despite his arrogance and his nature, he gradually takes place in our heart as well as hers. Despite all his faults, he is trying to improve and do what he can.

The Lieseil Shwarz world is very interesting. I enjoyed seeing all the inventions scattered throughout the novel, as well as all the creatures that appear there. At the end of the novel, I wondered how the author will be able to continue the story, but I am curious to find out what the author has for us.

A Conspiracy of Alchemists de Liesel Schwarz (VO)

The Chronicles of Light and Shadow, Tome1
