We are very happy today to have on the blog the author of the Abby Sinclair series: Allison Pang. For the release of her last book A Sliver of Shadow on February 28th, she accepted to answer some of our questions and for that we would like to thank her.
How many books do you intend to write for this series?
I’m currently contracted for three – if the publisher wants more after this, I’ll be happy to write them.
How did you end up writing UF books and not another genre?
A Brush of Darkness actually started out as a Paranormal Romance, but the editor at Pocket asked me to change it to UF. (It straddles the line a bit between two genres, but the next two are more UF oriented.)
Was it difficult to create the Abby’s character?
No. She’s a mish-mash of things I’ve experienced and once I figured out what her primary motivation was she became the easiest of my characters to write.
Who is your favorite character in the series and why?
Brystion – he’s a hard character for me to write, but that’s why I like him so much. I really have to pull back his layers to find out why he is the way he is.
Did you know from the start there will be a unicorn in your story? It’s so original.
I knew I wanted to give Abby a sidekick, but I though a cat might be too common, given the environment she’s in. I adore unicorns, so I thought it might be funny to give her a small one. He wasn’t actually supposed to talk, but it turns out he had a lot to say.
Do you have a favorite author? Or book?
Kushiel’s Dart by Jacqueline Carey (her whole series, really.)
Do you intend to write another series?
Yes – I’m writing more of a high fantasy/steampunk story right now.
Which book was easier to write?
I don’t know if any of them were particularly easy. They’ve all had their unique challenges and setbacks, as well as good moments.
Does the inspiration for the characters come from people you know?
Not specific people, no. Bits and pieces, yes. (And that includes myself.)
Do you need very specific conditions to write? With music? In a coffee shop? Where does the magic happen?
Just my netbook and usually some form of music. Otherwise, I can pretty much write anywhere.
It picks up about 6 months after A Brush of Darkness leaves off, so things have changed for Abby a little bit. She’s learning how use her Dreaming power, as well as managing her day to day life (including baby-sitting for Moira.) When Moira is called away to the Faery Court, a new Protectorate shows up and tries to claim Abby for herself. But things aren’t what they seem to be and when the Queen shuts down the CrossRoads, it’s up to Abby to find a solution.
(Because I’m curious) Have you already been to France?
Actually – yes. For one day. And this was about 20 years ago, so I don’t actually remember where in France I was. I was visiting family in Germany and they took us there for the day.
