The Clockwork Wolf by Lynn Viehl

Disenchanted & Co., Book 2

Synopsis: As the proprietor of Disenchanted & Co. in a steampunk version of America, Charmian “Kit” Kittredge makes her living solving magical crimes. But when a snobbish lady begs for help, saving her reputation might very well cost Kit her life.

Doing a favor for deathmage Lucien Dredmore, Kit agrees to interview a newly widowed lady as a potential client. Upon meeting, however, she learns that the woman in question is none other than Lady Eugenia Bestly, president of the Rumsen Ladies Decency Society—someone who once led a vicious campaign to ruin Kit’s life. Ironically Lady Bestly now lives in fear herself, for the press is about to unmask her husband as the savage “Wolfman” who died while terrorizing the city.

As monstrous rampages continue to occur, Kit soon determines there is more than one Wolfman, and that they may themselves be victims of evil players. While avoiding both mechanized assassins and attempts by Dredmore and Chief Inspector Tom Doyle to take her under their protection, Kit follows a tangled path that leads from a prestigious gentlemen’s club fronting a hellish secret to a vengeful native tribe and dangerous, ancient magics.

Review: I read the first book when it came out and I must say that I fell in love with the first part and I liked the second one, even if I thought it was perhaps be a little more complicated. When I saw the release of the second book, I was really excited to find out more about it, although I was a little afraid it would not be up to what I had read. I can now tell you that I had a great time and now I’m even more curious to read more.

Kit returned to a very quiet life or in any case to what it means for her. But the events happened have changed her feelings and habits in relation to the other characters, even if they do not understand the reasons sometimes. It is in this context that Dredmore goes to the young woman to offer her a deal she could only accept because the client wants to have a sister on that case. But it was a terrible mistake not to have asked about the identity of the client, because when Kit meets her, she immediately understands that it’s the woman who rolled her in the mud when she first arrived very early in this new city. Despite the rancor, I was quite impressed to see our heroine put things behind her to help the woman she has always hated and to try to save her from ruin. In fact, her husband is accused of being a Wolfman and of having terrorized and killed in the city before being killed himself. Yet Eugenia, his wife, is determined to prove that there is more and Kit will do everything to understand what really happened. But the more she sinks in the survey, the more hazards approach and she quickly realizes that there wasn’t one Wolfman, but several and they all seem determined to kill her at all costs.

I love Kit. She is a very different heroine from those we usually find in literature. In Victorian times when a woman has very little power and freedom, she dares to assert and stand up against those who try to destroy her life. She does not try to find a man to accompany her, and she even seeks the opposite, to get away from them to continue to live as she wants to, because she knows that marrying one of the two, require to change who she is, or what she wants in any case. Yet despite her determination and stubbornness, the Doyle and Dredmore attempts are hard to forget and while they both fight to protect her, she wants to be left alone and away from everyone. She does not want to be under the yoke of any person and is willing to do anything for this to be this way. But we know that deep down, she enjoys both men and I confess that I’m really curious to find out what will happen now! Oh yes very curious! It is, for me, very difficult to choose between everyone, as I said in my previous review, they both have something that attract us, between the black mage and enigmatic detective who always seems to be a knight. Two completely different characters and yet they both converge to Kit. And then of course, there’s always Harry, the ghost of the grandfather of our heroine who is more active than ever and we can only adore him!

I must say that I had many surprises throughout the story and I was eager enough to figure out who was behind the killing, the mutations and the reason behind this. And one thing is for sure, the culprit was a real surprise. But there are of course many more but I’ll let you discover that because the investigation was all fascinating and reveals many changes.

So I spent again a great time with this new novel, and I can only advise you to try this series. This is a beautiful blend of magic, plots and colorful characters, all this with a heroine we love. A great steampunk discovery.

The Clockwork Wolf de Lynn Viehl (VO)

Disenchanted & Co., Tome 2

His Lordship Possessed by Lynn Viehl

Disenchanted & Co. Book 1, Part #2

Synopsis: In a steampunk version of America that lost the Revolutionary War, Charmian (Kit) Kittredge makes her living investigating magic crimes and exposing the frauds behind them. While Kit tries to avoid the nobs of high society, as the proprietor of Disenchanted & Co. she follows mysteries wherever they lead.Lady Diana Walsh calls on Kit to investigate and dispel the curse she believes responsible for carving hateful words into her own flesh as she sleeps. While Kit doesn’t believe in magic herself, she can’t refuse to help a woman subjected nightly to such vicious assaults. As Kit investigates the Walsh family, she becomes convinced that the attacks on Diana are part of a larger, more ominous plot—one that may involve the lady’s obnoxious husband.

Sleuthing in the city of Rumsen is difficult enough, but soon Kit must also skirt the unwanted attentions of nefarious deathmage Lucien Dredmore and the unwelcome scrutiny of police Chief Inspector Thomas Doyle. Unwilling to surrender to either man’s passion for her, Kit struggles to remain independent as she draws closer to the heart of the mystery. Yet as she learns the truth behind her ladyship’s curse, Kit also uncovers a massive conspiracy that promises to ruin her life—and turn Rumsen into a supernatural battleground from which no one will escape alive.

Review: As I was so eager to read the second part of the novel! I must say that it was really terrible to be left like that at the end of the first part. I am relieved to see that once the book will be release in 2014, it will be complete. But for those who are trying both parts, buy them at once to not be cut in the story. Yet it took me several days before knowing the following adventures of our beloved Kit.

After being taken prisoner and after escaping, our heroine has no idea that her life will become a chaos. Indeed, Walsh is determined to make her life a hell, and being a young single woman, it is difficult for her to deal with everything that happens. After being accused of making magic, be expelled from her building and after someone had trashed her appartment, our young heroine doesn’t have many things left to survive. However, two men, Doyle and Dredmore are always there to help her even though they both expect something from her. The two men are completely different and it’s true that we immediately understand that whereas her choice would be, her life would be very different. Dredmore has everything of a bad boy unlike Doyle who is a knight in white armor complying fully with the law. And of course my heart is always for our beloved magician though he does not always know how to behave. How not to love this sorcerer who is willing to do anything for our heroine?

Even though I might have preferred the first part as it was easy to read it, this one was really interesting too. I think it’s because the author introduces us to many myths here and I confess that I have not yet fully assimilated everything. I am also curious to learn more about them or maybe I just need to reread the novel to understand the subtleties. But it was certainly a very interesting and fascinating story with an indubitable original touch. Lynn Viehl makes us discover many things and it was exciting to follow our heroine in this quest.

I admit that I really enjoyed this novel and I can not wait to see what Kit will discover about herself, now that her life took a new direction. It was a pretty novel full of originality and I look forward to read the next one to find out what the author has us for the future.

His Lordship Possessed de Lynn Viehl (VO)

Disenchanted & Co. Tome 1, Part #2

Review: I knew Lynn Viehl by another paranormal romance series but I admit that I was immediately intrigued by this new book. I love steampunk stories and mixing it with investigations could only be promising. And indeed, after reading the first book I can only recommend the series and the author. The worst thing that happened to me was to get to the end of the first part and understand that I would have to wait to read more of it. The novel ends in effect in the middle of the story and I must say that I found it terrible not being able to read more. I strongly advise to have both books before you start reading the whole story. But back to the story …

Kit is a young woman who doesn’t believe in magic, and from this belief she has a job. She is hired to show the world that mages are just charlatans, and that there aren’t any real curses or anything like that. However, our young heroine will quickly realize that everything is more complicated than that. When her investigation takes a complex turn, we will discover some truths about her past but also a large plot that only gets reveal here. A fascinating story full of action, danger, investigations and magic. A very good mix making an unique story.

I loved the story and the characters that we discover here. Kit is a young independent woman in a world that is not easy and where women have very few rights. She manages to stand up against those who denigrate and face the world with only her two best friends. These last two are also great to discover, one is a queen of the night, the other the wife of a rich man. Three people with a completely atypical profile and yet the loved each other a lot. They are there to support one or the other when necessary and do not hesitate to endanger themselves. But enough about the women, because of course we also have two very intriguing men! On one side we find Thomas Doyle, a descendant of an old friend of her mother, a policeman but who is also interested in our heroine and on the other side we can find a deathmage Lucien Dredmore who dreams about Kit since the first time he laid his eyes on her. I confess that I have a penchant for Lucien, although his manners aren’t the best. Yet even if it means alienating kit, he does not hesitate to do what he thinks right to protect her! And I must tell you that this is not, but not at all to the taste of our heroine! Yet there is something that attracts us and I’m really looking forward to know more about him.

It was a very good novel, or at least a very good first part and I am very eager to read more now. A wonderful beginning that I’m sure will continue in the next novel.
