Waterlocked by Elizabeth Hunter

Elemental World, Book 1.5

Synopsis: wa-ter-locked

adjective

Definition: enclosed entirely, or almost entirely, by water

Example: What happens when the water vampire you’ve promised yourself to actually wants you to go through with the wedding? For Gemma Melcombe, her engagement to Terrance Ramsay was a political maneuver. For Terry, it’s something entirely more. Rough waters may be ahead for these two headstrong lovers, but until they come to an agreement, Gemma will be waterlocked.

Waterlocked is a novella in the Elemental World series.

Review: Like for the original series, I always take a great pleasure in reading each new volume by Elizabeth Hunter. All the secondary characters are featured here and after Carwyn, we have now Gemma and Terrance.

This is a fairly short story but still quite complete. So we meet this couple who is engaged by arrangement and while Terrance loves her madly since their first meeting, it is far from being the case for Gemma. But hey, it must be said that she never thought too much about her feelings and she does not like what comes out when she does. However, even if she knew it would happen, Terry asks her to marry him to formalize things but it’s at that moment that our heroine chooses to disagree. Yet yes, she will marry him and perhaps understand later that her new husband is not so terrible than she wanted to think. She will face her feelings and understand that despite what she thought it is more than an arrangement. And while they find themselves on a boat in the middle of the ocean, our two heroes will face their past, will open to each other and face new dangers.

We can read it easily and quickly with as usual a few flashbacks and I really enjoyed learning a bit more about these two characters. All makes me really want to get into the second novel of the series.

For those who do not know that, the first novel in the original series “Hiddent Fire” is free as ebook so do not hesitate!

Elemental World, Tome 1.5

Résumé (traduction personnelle) : wa-ter-locked

adjectif

Building from Ashes by Elizabeth Hunter

Elemental World, Book 1

Synopsis: For a thousand years, powerful earth vampire Carwyn ap Bryn has served others. God. His family. His friends. But tragedy and loss disrupt his peaceful existence, causing him to question everything he has committed his eternity to.

Brigid Connor has known about vampires since they rescued her from a painful childhood. But not even their vast elemental power can save her from the demons that torment her.

As loyalties are tested and new paths are forged, a lurking danger slowly grows in the Elemental World. Carwyn and Brigid will learn that even secrets revealed can come back to haunt you when you least expect it.

Review: I love the Elemental Mystery series and I highly recommend you to read each novel because they’re all really great. But with the end of the Beatrice and Gio’s adventures, I was very pleased to see that the author did not stop there, and that a spin-off series would emerge. And that’s not all, because what more could we ask for than to have Carwyn featured this time? This is a mysterious character and yet he is always there for our two heroes throughout the novels.

I wondered the moment we would be at the beginning of this novel, but in fact it coincides with some periods we have already read and so it was interesting to see what happened next too. But as the story goes much further, I was pleasantly surprised to see appearing Gio and B. at certain times of the history for my greatest pleasure. They are however a detail in a much larger plot. Indeed, here we follow the life of Carwyn and Brigid, a girl saved by the vampire when she was a little girl. Under the care of Deirdre and her husband, the girl blossoms while digging into some vices such as drugs. Carwyn did however hear none of it and is determined to save her. But he did not expect to fall in love with her as she grew up and evolved into a whole new life. Fate will then link them with the death of Ioan and with the appearance this new drug in the market by Lorenzo, and causing extensive damage for both vampires and humans.

I loved to follow the two main characters. Brigid has suffered a lot throughout her life, and it is difficult to get on now. The drug was particularly something revealing for her and it was very difficult for her to understand that she really had a problem. Yet she will succeed to get by and even to build a good life as a member of a security team for a very powerful vampire. I appreciated her bravery and determination to do what was best. Yet she is also very fragile and naive when it goes to her friends. In terms of Carwyn, I admit that I was amazed at how he fell in love with this girl and yet he does not know how to act. And despite the advice of everyone, it will take a long time for him before deciding what to do. He is willing to do anything for the others, and thinks very little to his own happiness. But he will soon have to deal with his feelings too, and especially convince Brigid that she could also fall for him.

The plot of the story was also exciting! We discover the following events of the books I had the opportunity to read and therefore more about the elixir. I did not expect to find such a culprit at the end of the story but it was really well found. I was only sad about the story of Brigid’s friend, Em, which ultimately didn’t manage to get out of the drug or the life she led.

A very good book and I’m sure that like me you will be very happy to find out more about Carwyn our dear priest. A spin-off to discover and I’m curious to read the next one now!

Building from Ashes d’Elizabeth Hunter (VO)

Elemental World, Tome 1

—-

you present you in a few words?

I am a full time paranormal romance and fantasy writer who lives in Central California. I love writing, reading, travel, and cooking for my very crazy extended family. I have a wonderful son and various dogs to keep me busy when I’m not writing or publishing. I’m the author of the Elemental Mysteries/World series, the Cambio Springs series, and a few other things.

How would you describe the Elemental Mysteries series?

The Elemental Mysteries and World series tiptoe down the line between paranormal romance and mystery with a historical twist. Though the series is contemporary, much of the mystery comes from historical events. So it’s a fun series for people who like a good mix of intrigue, romance, and action. And humor! Always humor. The first four books center around one couple, Beatrice De Novo and Giovanni Vecchio. The Elemental World books expand on the series. It’s a very big universe, and the books take place all over the world, so it’s a fun place to write.

What would you most like potential readers to know about you and/or your book?

You can actually try the first book for free. A Hidden Fire is free in e-book edition on Amazon, iBookstore, Kobo, and Smashwords, so you can try out the series completely free and if you like it, buy the rest of the books! But I’m happy to give away the first so readers can see if they like my writing.

How do you pick the names of your characters? Are they just names you like, people you know or do they have some other meaning?

A very few characters are named after real people, but for the most part, they are names inspired by the character or their role in the series. Sometimes, they’re taken from mythology. They almost always have meaning, especially if it’s a main character.

List 5 characters from your series and do word associations.

Beatrice—Smart, sarcastic, courageous

Giovanni—Private, sensual, intellectual

Carwyn—Playful, brave, protective

Tenzin—Old, fierce, enigmatic

Baojia—Loyal, devoted, dangerous

If you could meet any characters in your book, who would it be and why?

Either Beatrice or Carwyn. I’d love to hang out with either. The jokes and the wine would flow.

What is the most memorable moment (good, bad, or other) you have had in your life as an author?

It was probably the morning I woke up to see A Hidden Fire number one on the free list at Amazon.com, and the three other books in the series all in the Top 100 Bestsellers. That was mind-boggling. Definitely a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

When you sit down and write do you know how the story will end or do you just let the pen take you?

I always know how a story (and usually a series) will end, before I sit down to write anything. I am very meticulous about research and planning ahead. Most of my books are in the pre-writing stage for months and months.

Whats the hardest scene for you to write?

A scene in Building From Ashes when a character dies. I think most readers of the books know who I’m talking about. It was a character who had already died in previous book, but in Ashes, we saw it from a different, more personal, perspective. And it was gut-wrenching to write. Honestly, very upsetting.

What authors have been an influence for you? And have you read any books lately that you want to share with us or have you been too busy with writing to read?

So many writers! I’ve been an avid reader my whole life, but if I think about writers who have influenced me in my own writing, it would probably be Anne Rice, who I find very inspirational personally and professionally. And even though he’s not a novelist, I think Joss Whedon has been hugely influential from a story-telling perspective. He’s an amazing storyteller who focuses on character, which is what I try to do.

As for books, I just finished reading Nalini Singh’s Psy-Changling series, which was fantastic! I was traveling, so I had quite a bit of time to read on planes and buses and such. I tore through the whole series in a month. Incredible. I highly recommend them. Wonderful characters and amazing world-building. I’ve been hearing about them for years now, so I’m so pleased I had a chance to enjoy them while I was away.

Are there any other projects you’re working on or thinking about starting in the near future?

I just returned from a research trip to Israel and Turkey for my new series, the Irin Chronicles. The first book, The Scribe, will be out this fall, and I’m very excited about it. I think readers who liked the history and romance of the Elemental Mysteries are going to love this trilogy. It’s a new mythology, and the first book is set mostly in Istanbul. I’ll be writing the second book in my Cambio Springs series (the shapeshifter series) after this book. Then I’m not sure what will be next! I might dive directly into the second Irin Chronicles book or return to the Elemental World.

 ——–

Beatrice—Intelligente, sarcastique, courageuse

Giovanni—Privé, sensuel, intellectuel

Carwyn—joueur, brave, protecteur

The Refuge, a sanctuary for wayward Tales, seems like the perfect place for Lavender to start a new life—especially when she discovers an unexpected ally in Seth, the brooding werewolf who’s been typecast as a villain ever since his run in with Little Red Riding Hood. But when humans from nearby towns start turning up dead, their bodies mutilated with archaic Tale symbols, Lavender wonders if Seth’s deep sensuality has blinded her to the truth. And that distraction could put innocent lives in danger. Including her own…

 Thank you Aurian!

Blog tour: Building From Ashes – Elizabeth Hunter

For the release of Building From Ashes the first spin off of the Elemental World series on October 23rd 2012, we can share with you a little excerpt of the book. Enjoy!
“So, you’re going to be in the Garda, are you?”
She shrugged. “Maybe Irish police. Maybe something international. Always wanted to travel.”
“You have?” From what he’d remembered Ioan telling him, the girl had trouble leaving the house to attend the village school.
She curled her lip. “Yeah. I have.”
“Well, good luck.”
“Thanks. Are we done talking now?”
He pointed to her pint. “Drink up. It won’t bite.”
“Unlike some things at the table.”
He laughed. “Well, that’s true, I suppose.”
Brigid rolled her eyes again, and Carwyn wondered if there was some sort of human medical procedure to keep her from repeating the annoying gesture.
“So—”
“You really don’t have to do this.”
“What?”
“Check up on me for them. I’m fine, Father.”
For some inexplicable reason, Brigid calling him “Father” annoyed him. Perhaps because she said it with such clear disdain. He lowered his glass and leaned across the table. “Look here, Brigid Connor. Get rid of the attitude.” He reached out and wrapped a hand around her tiny wrist, but softened it when he felt the flinch. He rubbed one thumb over her knuckles. “You and I both know that I could make you tell me anything I wanted if I used my amnis. I’m trying to be pleasant. I’m trying to do a favor for Ioan and Deirdre and your Aunt Sinead, who I happen to like more than most humans. So why don’t you—“
He broke off when the door opened and a gust of wind blew in. The cool air slid into the room and slipped over Brigid’s neck, drifting to his keen nose. His eyes narrowed, and his grip on her wrist tightened slightly. The fangs grew long in his mouth and his heart began to pound.
What the hell?

For a thousand years, powerful earth vampire Carwyn ap Bryn has served others. God.
