DNF: Fury of the Demon by Diana Rowland

Kara Gillian, Book 6

Synopsis: Who can Kara Gillian trust?

That’s what she’d like to know. Demon summoner and now a consultant for the FBI, Kara Gillian has spent the past several months in the demon realm training while recovering from the treachery of the demonic lord Rhyzkahl. Yet though the torment and betrayal she suffered at his hands continues to plague her, she’s not about to let that slow her down.

Kara returns to Earth to search for a fellow summoner being held by allies of Rhyzkahl. Aiding in the hunt are Kara’s friends, FBI agents Ryan Kristoff and Zack Garner. However, Kara and Zack know Ryan’s true identity—though he himself does not—and questions of loyalty threaten to tear apart their previously close-knit group. Rhyzkahl’s machinations run deeper than they could have ever imagined, and the search for the missing summoner takes on a desperate edge while dangers from ancient demon oaths loom and enemies increase in power and numbers.

Armed with her skills, wit, and attitude, it is up to Kara to save her friends and her world.

The price of failure will be her soul.

Review : It’s been a while since I have this novel but it’s true that I have not taken the time to get into the story. Yet I had such a good time with the previous volumes, so I did not think it could be different this time … I quickly realized my mistake. Indeed, from the beginning of the story I struggled to hold on the events or to be interested in Kara or the other characters. I must say that we spend half of the novel (yes because I stopped a little after a half of it) seeing Kara trying to recover from the changes, once back on earth and this is long … very long. I do not know … the book is about 500 pages so it’s true that it is quite big but I expected a little more action, an investigation more present maybe or something a little livelier compared to the other demons but it is far from the case. Over pages 277, I think everything could have been fused quickly enough.

It is true that I am quite disappointed but I did not expect such a drop of enthusiasm especially after 5 very good volumes, I even enjoyed the change of intrigue that many had hardly appreciated previously… But now as Nyx who managed to finish it, I am disappointed not to have what I expected. I saw that others had loved the story too so this is a very personal feeling, but I wonder what will result. I count on you to tell me for the sequel Nyx!

Touch of the Demon by Diana Rowland

Kara Gillian, Book 5

Synopsis: Kara Gillian is in some seriously deep trouble.

She’s used to summoning supernatural creatures from the demon realm to our world, but now the tables have been turned and she’s the one who’s been summoned. Kara is the prisoner of yet another demonic lord, but she quickly discovers that she’s far more than a mere hostage. Yet waiting for rescue has never been her style, and Kara has no intention of being a pawn in someone else’s game.

There’s intrigue to spare as she digs into the origin of the demonic lords and discovers the machinations of humans and demons alike. Kara is shocked to discover that she has her own history in the demon realm, and that the ties between her and the demonic lords Rhyzkahl and Szerain go back farther than she could have ever imagined. But treachery runs rampant among all the lords, and she’s going to have to stay sharp in order to keep from being used to further their own agendas. The lords have a secret that dates back to earth’s ancient history, and it could have devastating repercussions for both worlds.

Yet more than anything else, Kara’s abilities as a homicide detective will be put to the test—because this time the murder she has to solve is her own.

Review: What to say? I was really anxious before starting this novel … Indeed, there are widely different reviews regardless wherever the place where we read them and it is true that between a friend who was completely disappointed and one who completely loved it, I was not sure where my heart was going to swing. It remained for me to read it to know my verdict. And finally I was very surprised by this novel, and in the right way. It’s true, I also understand why some have a little more trouble. This book is very different from the others which we have been accustomed to, and I felt that the series took a big turning point in its history this time. But I must say it has completely convinced me for my part. I dare say that this volume is my favorite of the series. All I wanted to know since the first book was revealed in part. Of course there are a lot of events whose we remain totally shocked about. I had to reread certain passages to try to understand what was going on, to try to understand the reactions of certain characters or to see how the situation could change in such a short time. I think we can only be completely surprised by this novel, whether by what is going on or by this new plot that we follow.

Since the end of Volume 4, I could not wait to see what would happen in the demons realm. Who would not? We knew nothing of this place and I really wanted to learn and understand how it was governed. I must say that the explanations and information has exceeded my expectation. We learn so many things here, either about the characters, the world or the past of each person. Kara is in the hands of a Lord who makes her do many things. But despite appearances, the Lord does everything he can to protect his world and hers, and Kara is a threat. At first I was quite disturbed to see that she was not rebelling more compared to what she was going through, it was pretty strange to see her that way, but we understand very well that whatever she might do, nothing will change her state. However she does not remain there doing nothing, and she is waiting patiently for her moment to act and break free of her “chains”. She discovers that she has an affinity with this world she thought she did not know about and a mysterious past is revealed to her gradually throughout the novel. As I also said at the beginning, there are some quite unimaginable events and it’s pretty hard to understand all the actions. Kara is actually quite naive and trusts others rather easily, something that will put her in big trouble. There is an event that particularly shocked me, and we wonder throughout the book what happened, why everything turned this way and what really were the reasons. Our heroine has a pretty amazing effect on each of Lords and we wonder what will happen on the end and what skills she will develop.

There is perhaps one thing that bothered me a bit in the novel. When I started the series, Kara showed enough “suspicion” in relation to people with whom she had a relationship. Or at least it made her think a lot and I feel that she had forget about all that without a reason. And she does not need much. It’s not a lot but it’s true that I’m curious to see what Diana Rowland reserves us later to see what happens then. It was therefore a very good volume and a real surprise.

La main du démon de Diana Rowland

Kara Gillian, Tome 5

Sins of the Demon by Diana Rowland

Kara Gillian, Book 4

Synopsis: The homicide beat in Louisiana isn’t just terrifying, it’s demonic. Detective Kara Gilligan of the supernatural task force has the ability to summon demons to her aid, but she herself is pledged to serve a demonic lord. And now, people who’ve hurt Kara in the past are dropping dead for no apparent reason. To clear her name and save both the demon and human worlds, she’s in a race against the clock and in a battle for her life that just may take her to hell and back.

Review: I’m always happy to read a new adventure of Kara Gillian. Diana Rowland is a master in the art of creating intrigues that keep us in suspense throughout each of her stories. This one is a great example.

Kara must once again face the consequences of her association with her demon. But even with a bodyguard out of the ordinary, her protection is still quite complicated. Well, this is not reassuring when someone tries to call her in the demon’s world, and although she does her possible to not answer, the danger is closer each day. However, our young heroine must also deal with a wave of strange deaths. In fact, after having discovered the bodies of two people, Kara realizes that the victims are familiar to her and that she had already met them in the past. But our conjurer has many enemies everywhere whether in among the humans or demons and finding the culprit who tries to trap her seems more complicated than expected.

I confess that I was looking forward the meetings between Kara and Rhyzkahl, but I quickly realized that this time they would be much more limited. I was a little disappointed, it’s true, because we only see him a few moments in the story. The rhythm of the story, however, helps us to forget this fact, as we’re carried away by the plot. Because, yes, of course, many things happen throughout the chapters and it is therefore not possible to get bored for a second. Once started, I was really curious to discover all the answers to my questions, and I could not put the book down before finishing it. The third volume introduced us many elements that are developed here. So we learn much more about Ryan (yes, his secret is revealed a little more each time), but it is not everything.

The writing style is fluid and it is very easy to get into the story. It might have been easier to find who was behind the murders. Well of course, I didn’t know all the ramifications of the story before the author reveals them to us, but it was the first book in which I could know a part of the truth before Kara realizes she same. However, the end is terrible, a big change is coming and we hope to have quickly the next book to understand what will happen and how they will manage to face it. To conclude, it was a very good new book, mixing mystery, conspiracy, murder and demons. And as always, I look forward for further events.

Les péchés du Démon de Diana Rowland

Kara Gillian, Tome 4

Secrets of the Demon by Diana Rowland

Kara Gillian, Book 3

Synopsis: Homicide detective Kara Gillian has a special talent: she can sense the “arcane” in our world, and there’s quite a bit of it, even in Beaulac, Louisiana. She’s also a summoner of demons, and works on a task force that deals with supernatural crimes. Her partners are attractive and smart FBI agents, but they’re not summoners, and they’re not telling Kara why they are on this special force with her.

TO make things worse, Kara has pledged herself to one of the most powerful of demons-a Demon Lord-who helped save her partner’s life, but now expects things in return. Meanwhile, she’s trying to solve a string of murders that are somehow tied together by money, sex, rock music and…mud. But how can she concentrate on the case when she’s not even sure who-or what-her partners are?

Review: Kara Gillian is a series that I really enjoy with the strong presence of the police investigations combining with many paranormal elements. It’s true, I admit, I am also very curious whenever about her personal relationships with Ryan or Rhyzkahl. Yes, because these two men have both something more despite my heart always balances for the demon. Why is that? I have no idea, maybe because he seems more dangerous and much more honest in his choice than Ryan? It’s possible.

What about the story? At the concert of a new famous singer, a golem made of mud attacks our young celebrity who is still alive thanks to the speed of our heroine who rescues her as fast as she can. As she has never been confronted to such a creature, it is difficult for her to understand what is happening or how to get rid of it. But now that she is part of a new paranormal team, she knows that there are always people who can help her. But if it was only that, someone apparently seeks to invoke her in the plain of the demons and she doesn’t even know the reason. We have here a big investigation and many new information we expected since the first volume.

Yes, this book is full of revelations and I was completely surprised by some of them. No … we still do not know what Rhyzkahl wants from our heroine and I must say that I am becoming increasingly curious about the reasons. I would like to know if he really appreciates her and the reason of all the things he hides. But this demon is enigmatic and it is also what makes him what he is. I think it’s unfortunate that we don’t see him a lot in the story because I appreciate each of his meetings. Regarding Ryan, we learn a lot of things about him as well, although some are only deductions from Kara, but what a surprise! The novel ends up on a very apotheosis and I was so happy to know who he really was just like Zack. We were introduced to a new character who I think will be present in the future novels. I really enjoyed this protagonist and I look forward to learning more now.

I didn’t expect the outcome of the story, nor the plot and as always Diana Rowland had many very good ideas here, we’re completely lost throughout the novel to have the truth at the end of the story. To conclude, it’s a new very good book although I sometimes had some problems with the turns of some sentences and I’m curious to see how the original version (in English) is to see the differences with the French translations.
