Our review: You all know my love for urban fantasy books, so how to not succumb to this new series by Lilith Saintcrow? This book has everything we could like, a great heroine, demons, werewolves and many other things.

Jill Kismet is an extraordinary young woman. In fact, since the death of her teacher and the only person she loved, she became the hunter of the city. Trying to be strong, she decides to dedicate her life to her job. Her mission is something she takes very seriously and nobody can approach her territory with impunity. But more than that our heroine is a broken character. We discover her throughout the novel, knowing what she had to go trough to be the person she is. It is so sad to understand her feelings and pain. The difficulty of being alone, having lost the only person that mattered to her, she leads a constantly battle against the demon with whom she is under contract. Many things that make the life more complicated for Kismet. I enjoyed the Lilith Saintcrow ideas in this first novel. She creates a special world, where we encounter creatures that I had not yet had the opportunity to meet and I was really intrigued by them. Of course, we collect some information about them but there are still many unanswered questions. Especially about Perry, the creature who forged a contract with Kiss. We try to understand what he really wants from her, something quite difficult because he loses us many times. But anyway our heroine is determined to not let him do what he wants and she avoids him as much as possible. Problem? Avoiding him seems more complicated than expected.

In this novel, Jill will face a creature killing many people in her city. Usual thing for her, except that this case is ultimately much more difficult than expected. And when the werewolfs come to town looking for one of them, she finds herself with many people involved in the events. We discover Saul, a werewolf who comes to live at Kiss home during the time of his investigation. This man is awesome, and we hope from the start that he could fill what’s missing in our hunter. He is understanding, caring and seems willing to help her as he can. We fall quickly under his spell and we try to understand him as best as possible. He also acts strangely and although we try to find out what is really happening, we’re left with many questions that we hope will be resolved in the next novel.

So it was a very nice new first volume to discover and I’ll surely read the second one soon.

I did not know this series at all and suddenly I was eager to meet this Urban Fantasy heroine, Jill Kismet. The world that Lilith Saintcrow has created is original, rich and very interesting. But it is also quite complex and fortunately there is the glossary at the end of the French Edition to help us see things more clearly. I had to refer to it two or three times. I must admit that at the beginning I had difficulties to get into this book. Indeed, the descriptions are numerous and there is lot of information and at times I was a bit lost in all this mass of details. I had also some difficulties to visualize certain scenes, especially the fight scenes. But I must say that it is the first book of Lilith Saintcrow I read so therefore it took me some time to get familiar with her writing style. But once managed in the second half of the book, I was completely caught up in the story. 
The story takes place in a city overrun by demons that only bring chaos and corruption. Jill is a demon huntress. People call her for everything related to the supernatural and this includes even some exorcisms. She is a pretty tough girl. She is impulsive and does not hesitate to snub those who care a bit about her. To the reader, she could pass for a disagreeable heroine but gradually pieces of her past are revealed and we finally understand why she is as tough. She has built an armor to protect herself emotionally. She is a young woman scarred and tormented by her heavy past. Her mentor’s death, completed to break her. She was very attached to him and she feels guilty for not being able to save him. She works alone for only six months and he misses her terribly. But she is a strong woman who suffered a lot in the past and now she is determined to maintain order in her city. When the bodies of five policemen are found mutilated, torn, she does not need more to investigate. In this case, she will team up with Harp and Dominic, two Weres from the Martindale Section (= division of the FBI in charge of tracking down the nocturnal world criminals) and Saul, a Were tracker. I loved these three characters. Harp and Dominic are compelling and nice and the least we can say is that they are familiar with our heroine and her bad temper. Concerning Saul, well I can say I’m already in love. His meeting with Jill is tumultuous but he really seems to care about her and be a perfect housewife! She is very lucky! 
We also meet a great number of characters ranging from policemen, coroners, then there is Avery, the official exorcist of the police or Galina… And there is Perry, the demon with whom Jill signed a pact earlier to become the formidable hunter she is now. Perry is a scaring character and difficult to understand, we wonder why he wanted to sign a contract with our heroine. We do not know much about him in this book except that he is very powerful and that he is a sadist. 

The story is quite exciting and there is a lot of action. However, we regret the lack of information about the apparition of the demons. From the first pages, we enter the heart of the matter without any explanation, which is unfortunate. It was however a nice read and I will read book 2 with pleasure.

Bienvenue dans mon univers.

Notre avis :  Vous connaissez tous mon goût pour la fantaisie urbaine, alors comment ne pas succomber à cette nouvelle série de Lilith Saintcrow ? Il faut dire qu’il y a tout, une héroïne comme on les aime, des démons, des garous et bien d’autres choses encore.

Jill Kismet est une jeune femme hors du commun. En effet depuis la mort de son professeur et seule personne qu’elle aimait, elle est devenue la chasseuse attitrée de la ville. Essayant de s’endurcir comme elle le peut, elle se lance à cœur perdu dans le travail sans s’arrêter. Sa mission est quelque chose qu’elle prend vraiment au sérieux et personne ne peut empiéter sur son territoire impunément. Mais plus que ça notre héroïne est un personnage brisé. On la découvre tout au long du roman, comprenant par quoi elle a dû passer pour en arriver là. C’est assez triste de comprendre ses sentiments et sa peine. La difficulté d’être seule, d’avoir perdu la seule personne qui comptait pour elle, la bataille qu’elle mène sans cesse contre le démon avec qui elle est sous contrat. Beaucoup de choses qui rendent la vie de Kismet des plus compliquées. J’ai beaucoup apprécié les idées de Lilith Saintcrow dans ce premier roman. Elle crée un monde particulier, où se rencontrent des créatures que je n’avais pas encore eu l’occasion de rencontrer et qui m’ont tout de suite vraiment intriguées. Bien sûr, on arrive à récolter quelques informations à leur sujet mais il reste de nombreuses questions sans réponses. Notamment au sujet de Perry, la créature avec qui Kiss a forgé un pacte. On essaie de comprendre ce qu’il veut vraiment d’elle, chose assez difficile car il brouille bien les pistes. Mais quoi qu’il en soit notre héroïne est bien décidée à ne pas lui laisser ce plaisir et à l’éviter le plus possible. Problème ? L’éviter semble plus compliqué que prévu.
Dans ce roman, Jill sera confrontée à une créature tuant de nombreuses personnes dans sa ville. Chose habituelle pour elle, sauf que cette affaire se trouve finalement beaucoup plus difficile que prévue. Et quand arrive en ville les garous à la recherche d’un des leurs qui s’est échappé, elle se retrouve avec de nombreuses personnes concernées par les événements. On découvre ainsi Saul, un garou qui vient habiter chez Kiss le temps de son enquête. Cet homme est un amour, et on espère dès le début qu’il arrivera à combler ce qu’il manque à notre chasseuse. Il est compréhensif, attentionné et semble prêt à l’aider comme il le peut. On tombe très vite sous son charme et on essaie de le comprendre au mieux possible. Il agit aussi étrangement et bien qu’on essaie de savoir ce qu’il se passe vraiment, on reste avec de multiples questions qu’on espère seront résolues dans le prochain roman.
C’était donc un nouveau premier volume très agréable à découvrir et je vous le conseille avec plaisir.

Je ne connaissais pas encore cette série et du coup j’étais impatiente de faire connaissance avec cette nouvelle héroïne de fantaisie urbaine, Jill Kismet. L’univers qu’a créé Lilith Saintcrow est à la fois original, riche et très intéressant. Mais il est aussi assez complexe et heureusement d’ailleurs qu’il y a le glossaire en fin d’ouvrage pour nous aider à y voir plus clair. J’ai dû m’y référer à deux ou trois reprises. Je dois avouer qu’au début j’ai eu un peu de mal à accrocher. En effet, les descriptions sont nombreuses ainsi que les informations diverses et par moments, je me suis un peu perdue dans toute cette masse de détails. J’ai eu aussi parfois un peu de mal à visualiser certaines scènes, notamment les scènes de combat. Il faut dire que c’est le premier livre de Lilith Saintcrow que je lis et il m’a donc fallu un certain temps pour me familiariser avec sa plume. Mais une fois arrivée à la deuxième moitié du livre, j’ai été complètement happée par l’histoire. 
L’histoire en question se déroule dans une ville envahie par les infernaux (démons) qui ne font que semer le chaos et la corruption. Jill est une chasseuse de démons. On fait appel à elle pour tout ce qui touche au surnaturel et cela inclue même certains exorcismes. C’est une dure à cuire. Elle est assez impulsive et n’hésite pas à rabrouer tous ceux qui se soucient un tant soit peu d’elle. Aux yeux du lecteur, elle pourrait passer pour une héroïne antipathique mais progressivement, des pans de son passé nous sont dévoilés et l’on finit par comprendre pourquoi elle est si endurcie. Elle s’est forgée une sacrée carapace. C’est une jeune femme meurtrie et tourmentée par un lourd passé. La mort de son professeur, envers qui elle était très attachée a achevé de la briser. Elle se sent coupable de ne pas avoir pu le sauver. Elle travaille seule que depuis six mois et il lui manque terriblement. Mais c’est une femme forte, qui en a beaucoup bavé par le passé et qui est déterminée à faire régner l’ordre dans sa ville. Lorsque l’on retrouve cinq cadavres de policiers mutilés, déchiquetés, il ne lui en faut pas plus pour mener l’enquête. Dans cette affaire, elle fera équipe avec Harp et Dominic, deux garous issus de la Section Martindale (= une division du FBI chargée de traquer les criminels du monde nocturne) et Saul, un garou traqueur. J’ai beaucoup aimé ces trois personnages. Harp et Dominic sont très attachants et le moins qu’on puisse dire est qu’ils connaissent bien notre héroïne et son sale caractère. Saul quant à lui, eh bien je suis déjà sous le charme. Sa rencontre avec Jill est tumultueuse mais il semble vraiment se soucier d’elle et en plus il se révèle être une véritable fée du logis. Elle en a de la chance ! 
On fait également connaissance avec toute une pléiade de personnages allant des policiers, aux médecins légistes, puis il y a Avery l’exorciste officiel de la police, ou encore Galina la gardienne du Sanctuaire… Et il y a Perry, l’infernal avec qui Jill a conclu un pacte un peu plus tôt afin de devenir la chasseuse redoutable qu’elle est aujourd’hui. Perry est un personnage assez malsain et difficile à cerner, on se demande pourquoi il a voulu conclure un tel marché avec notre héroïne. On ne sait pas grand-chose sur lui dans ce tome si ce n’est qu’il est très puissant et que c’est un sadique. 
L’histoire est assez prenante, il y a beaucoup d’action. On regrettera toutefois le manque d’informations sur l’apparition des infernaux dans la ville. Dès les premières pages, on rentre dans le vif du sujet sans la moindre explication, ce qui est un peu dommage. Cela dit c’était une belle découverte et je lirai le tome 2 avec plaisir.

Going from romance to rescue requires some serious gear-shifting, as well as a little backup. Her best friend, Billy, and Mark, the CIA agent she’s been crushing on for years—both skilled adaptors—step in to help, but their priority is, annoyingly, keeping her safe. Before long, Ciel is dedicating more energy to escaping their watchful eyes than she is to saving her client’s intended.

Suddenly, facing down a horde of Vikings feels like the least of her problems.

Cet assignement particulier est assez agréable… c’est le cas que jusqu’à ce que le bungalow de Ciel soit explosé et que la personne à qui elle est sensée être fiancée soit enlevée par des Viking des temps modernes. Pour quelques raisons, Ciel commence à suspecter que récupérer cette bague va être une tache plus compliquée que prévue.
Aller de la romance à la rescousse exige un certain changement de vitesse, ainsi que certains alliés. Son meilleur ami, Billy, et Mark, l’agent de la CIA, pour qui elle a le béguin depuis des années – tous deux des adaptateurs qualifiés -arrivent pour l’aider, mais leur priorité est, fâcheusement, de la garder en sureté. Dès lors, Ciel dédie plus d’énergie à échapper à leurs yeux attentifs que ce qu’elle en a pour sauver son client.

Soudain, faire face à une horde de Vikings ne devient que le moindre de ses problèmes.
