Review: I’m always attracted to stories about Sherlock Holmes and even more when they portray strong women full of intelligence. I therefore admit that I did not wait much to get into the novel.  I was then eager to discover the ideas of the author this time!

It was not exactly the story I expected, I admit, especially in terms of Sherlock Holmes but we find very different ideas of what we usually have. We discover Charlotte, a girl ahead of her time who is determined to become someone and not the wife of a man. Yet, despite her father’s agreement declaring that if she promises to try to be a proper woman first, she could do what she wants to, nothing materializes and her parents continue to insist that she marries. To avoid this, she ruins her reputation and flees to try to live by herself, though it will not be as easy as expected. In addition, Charlotte, under the pseudonym of Sherlock Holmes, helps solve cases and the latest is quite complicated. Indeed, her sister is suspected of murdering a woman and our heroine is determined to prove that she isn’t guilty.

I liked Charlotte’s life, to see how she would get by between all that was going on in her life. It was interesting to see that in that period what would happen to her after all these events. However, I admit that I was less taken away by the Sherlock Holmes part, by the letters she writes and it was difficult for me to get into the investigation. It was only towards the end, when Charlotte is in the field that I managed to get interested some more.

So it was an interesting and different novel, and I’m curious to see what will result.

Synopsis: For some people, the untamed beauty of the bayou is a place to hide. The mysterious deaths aren’t her only problem. A dangerous drug known as Black Diamond is circulating through Terrebonne Parish, turning addicts into unpredictable sociopaths. Jena’s investigation leads her to Cole Ryan—a handsome, wary recluse struggling with his own troubled history—who knows more than he’s willing to admit. If they want to stop the killer, Jena and Cole must step out of the shadows of their pasts and learn to help each other…before the evils lurking in the bayou consume them both.

Review: I really liked the first volume, I must say that the setting attracted me immediately. How not to be intrigued by a novel in the bayou? For an opportunity to learn more about a part of Louisiana? I admit that I am always curious in these cases.

So we are following here two new characters Jena, an agent as Broussard is, and Cole, a recluse who is trying to escape his past while living like a hermit. But now, history will gather them together when a body is found in the Bayou killed by a crocodile and that Cole detains the famous animal. Yet the story also seems to be related to the new drug spreading in town and changing people in sociopaths. Everyone is trying to stem this new scourge without much success.

I loved the novel again. As I said the universe is fascinating but when in addition we have a good investigation, everything is perfect! Cole and Jena are also two characters that I loved to follow. Indeed, they have both been broken by life and if some scars are only physical, there are many psychic. Moreover, we discover that perfectly with these two characters. I will not say more for not giving too much away but I was easily carried by the chapters, wondering what was going on exactly. Moreover we can also see several characters of the first novel to our delight and others are of course staged. I hope we will have the chance to discover more about Mac, Jena’s partner, soon. It was a very endearing character too.

It was like I said once again a very good novel mixing drugs investigation and a nice story between two protagonists.

Les morts mystérieuses ne sont pas son seul problème. Une drogue dangereuse connue sous le nom Black Diamond circule dans la paroisse de Terrebonne, transformant les toxicomanes en sociopathes imprévisibles. L’enquête de Jena l’amène à Cole Ryan – un beau reclus méfiant aux prises avec sa propre histoire, qui en sait plus qu’il est prêt à admettre. S’ils veulent arrêter le tueur, Jena et Cole doivent sortir de l’ombre de leur passé et apprendre à s’aider l’un l’autre … avant que les maux qui se cachent dans le bayou ne les consument tous les deux.

Avis : J’avais vraiment beaucoup aimé le premier tome, il faut dire que le cadre nous attire tout de suite. Comment ne pas être intrigué par un roman de déroulant dans le bayou ? Par une possibilité d’en apprendre plus sur une partie de la Louisiane ? J’avoue que je suis toujours attirée par ce genre de choses.

Nous suivons donc ici deux nouveaux personnages Jena, un agent comme Broussard l’était, et Cole, un reclus qui essaie de fuir son passé en vivant comme un ermite. Mais voilà, l’histoire va les réunir quand un cadavre est retrouvé dans le Bayou tué par un crocodile et que Cole trouve le fameux animal. Pourtant, cette histoire semble aussi être liée à la nouvelle drogue qui se propage en ville et qui change les personnes en sociopathes. Tout le monde essaie d’endiguer ce nouveau fléau sans grand succès.

J’ai beaucoup aimé le roman une fois de plus. Comme je le disais l’univers est fascinant mais quand en plus on a une bonne enquête, tout est parfait ! Cole et Jena sont aussi deux personnages que j’ai adorés suivre. En effet, ils ont tous les deux été brisés par la vie et si certaines marques ne sont que physiques, il en existe de nombreuses psychiques. On le découvre d’ailleurs parfaitement bien avec ces deux personnages. Je ne vais pas en dire plus pour ne pas trop en dévoiler mais on se laisse facilement porter par les chapitres en se demandant ce qu’il se passe exactement. On revoit d’ailleurs plusieurs personnages du premier roman pour notre plus grand plaisir et d’autres sont mis en scène. J’espère que nous aurons la chance de retrouver Mac, le partenaire de Jena, bientôt. C’était un personnage très attachant lui aussi.

C’était comme je le disais encore une fois un très bon roman mélangeant souffrance, drogue, enquête et une jolie histoire entre les deux protagonistes.

In her search for answers, Genevieve uncovers an astonishing secret that, should she reveal it, could spell disaster for those she cares about most. But if she lets her discovery remain hidden, she will almost certainly condemn her patient to the electric chair.

Review: Most of you don’t know that but I always wanted to become a psychiatrist and I even tried two years of medicine for it. The competition being what it is in France, I was not able to complete this course and I finally did chemistry (not great similarities, I know). But when I saw that the story staged a psychiatrist, a time in the early twentieth century and of course an investigation at the same time, I admit that I could not resist and I am very happy!

Genevieve is a young woman marked by her past but who is determined to achieve her objectives, that is to say, to create a career as a psychiatrist although few believe in her. It must be said that the period is not necessarily suitable in relation to this but it does not change her desire to help others. It is in fact during the first group session she manages to prepare to help persons to handle grief that she meets with Eliza. This young woman has lost a child, drowned, but she also carries the grief of the little girl taken from her when she was 15. But now she would like to find her. For this, Geneviève advises her to confront the doctor and to demand to know what happened to her. Alas, this view will prove to have disastrous consequences when her patient is found near the doctor’s body the next day …. Two possibilities are then offered to our psychiatrist: Eliza killed the man and she therefore would be partly responsible (as she wouldn’t have realized the psychological fragility of the young woman) or what Eliza says is true and another person was present that day and would have struck the fatal blow. Although Genevieve is convinced of the innocence of her patient, a doubt remains and our heroine will be determined to understand what is really going on.

I found this was a really fascinating investigation, a mixture of money, ethics, and pending investigation which completely takes us throughout the chapters. We easily manage to understand Genevieve, her desire to help Eliza, even though nobody seems to notice her, to evolve as she wishes even if her father would rather see something else. She will do everything to help the young woman to the point to put herself in danger. Yet she surely did not expect to discover an ancient network of adoptions, and to draw attention from dangerous people. But all this is only the beginning of something much more terrible and I found that the author brought her revelations perfectly, leaving us guessing before confirming gradually our assumptions. There are many surprises and it is true that the story is well mastered, surprising by many sides and I admit that I really did not expect all this.

In any case, I can tell you that I had a great time. I’m happy to hear that this book is part of a series because I’m really curious to read more. I was really blown away by the whirlwind of her life and I was delighted to have discovered all these ideas. A very good surprise!

Etant l’une des premières femmes pratiquant dans un nouveau domaine de la psychologie, le Dr Geneviève Summerford a l’habitude de forger son propre chemin. Mais quand l’une de ses patientes est arrêtée pour meurtre – un meurtre que Geneviève craint d’avoir involontairement provoqué, elle est forcée de demander l’aide d’une vieille connaissance.

Désespérée d’innocenter le nom de sa patiente et de soulager sa conscience coupable, Geneviève se retrouve à briser toutes les règles qu’elle a toujours essayé de suivre (tant bien que mal). Dans sa recherche de réponses, Geneviève découvre un secret étonnant qui, si elle le révèle, pourrait être catastrophique pour ceux dont elle se soucie le plus. Mais si elle laisse sa découverte cachée, elle condamnera sa patiente à la chaise électrique.

Avis : Peu de vous le savent mais j’ai toujours voulu devenir psychiatre et j’ai même tenté deux années de médecine pour cela. Le concours étant ce qu’il est en France, je n’ai pas réussi à achever ce cursus et je suis finalement partie vers la chimie (pas de grandes similitudes, je sais). Mais quand j’ai vu que l’histoire mettait en scène une psychiatre, une époque au début du vingtième siècle et bien sûr une enquête par la même occasion, j’avoue que je n’ai pas pu résister et j’en suis très contente !

Geneviève est une jeune femme marquée par son passé mais qui est déterminée à réaliser ses objectifs, c’est-à-dire se créer une carrière en tant que psychiatre bien que peu croient en elle. Il faut dire que la période n’est pas forcément propice par rapport à cela mais cela ne change en rien son désir d’aider les autres. C’est lors d’une première séance de groupe pour gérer le deuil qu’elle rencontre Eliza. Cette jeune femme a perdu un enfant noyé mais elle porte aussi le chagrin de la petite fille qu’on lui a pris alors qu’elle avait 15 ans et dont elle aimerait à présent retrouver la trace. Pour cela, Geneviève lui conseille de confronter le médecin et d’exiger de savoir ce qu’elle est devenue. Hélas, cet avis va s’avérer avoir des conséquences désastreuses quand sa patiente est retrouvée proche du corps du médecin le lendemain…. Deux possibilités s’offrent alors à notre psychiatre : Eliza a tué l’homme et elle en serait alors en partie responsable (ne s’étant pas rendu compte de la fragilité psychologique de la jeune femme) ou Eliza dit vrai et une autre personne semblait présente ce jour-là et aurait porté le coup fatal. Bien que Geneviève soit persuadée de l’innocence de sa patiente, une part de doute subsiste et notre héroïne sera déterminée à comprendre ce qu’il se passe réellement.

J’ai trouvé cette enquête vraiment fascinante, un mélange d’argent, de déontologie, de suspens et d’enquête qui nous emporte complètement tout au long des chapitres. On parvient facilement à comprendre Geneviève, son désir d’aider Eliza, quand bien même personne ne semble de son avis, d’évoluer comme elle le désire même si son père préfère la voir faire autre chose. Elle va mettre tous les moyens de son côté pour essayer d’aider la jeune femme au point même de se mettre elle-même en danger. Pourtant, elle ne s’attendait surement pas à découvrir un ancien réseau d’adoptions, et à attirer l’attention de personnes dangereuses. Mais tout cela n’est que le début de quelque chose de bien plus terrible et j’ai trouvé que l’auteure amené parfaitement ses révélations, nous laissant planer le doute avant de confirmer petit à petit nos hypothèses. Il y a de nombreuses surprises et c’est vrai que l’histoire est bien maitrisée, surprenantes par de nombreux côtés et j’avoue que je ne m’attendais vraiment pas à tout cela.

Dans tous les cas, je peux vous dire que j’ai passé un excellent moment. Je suis vraiment contente d’apprendre que ce livre fait partie d’une série parce que je suis très curieuse d’en lire plus. J’ai vraiment été emportée par le tourbillon de sa vie et je suis ravie d’avoir découvert toutes ces idées. Une très bonne surprise !

Review: It’s been a long time since I was waiting for a new book in the Graveyard Queen series but we knew that three volumes would come out later. Having spent a great time with the previous stories, I was curious to immerse myself in the further adventures of Amelia Gray and to find out what Amanda Stevens had in store for us! It took some time for the release of the fourth volume, but it is with pleasure that I immediately jumped on it!

I was nervous while starting the novel because I finally struggled to get into the story at first. I thought all was starting slowly and I was nervous that it would stay that way throughout the novel. But no, this is not the case and the author takes us one more time in her history that keeps us in suspense throughout the chapters.

Now that all the problems related to Devlin or at last the most urgent cases are solved, our heroine finds herself embarked on a whole new story. Indeed, it would appear that she is now haunted by a ghost despite the rules she has tried to follow throughout her life. Amelia will then do everything to understand what is happening and try to determine what all the objects she finds mean. But it is also in this context that she will end up diving into her past, discovering some revelations which she did not expect at all (and neither do we) related to a sort of town massacred in mass several years ago. Called by this place, she is also engaged to restore the cemetery and to discover its secrets. Yet it could be that those secrets are more dangerous than expected and could bring a very powerful entity among her people. In addition to this, Amelia must also manage her relationship with Devlin which is quite complicated and it’s true that I’m really curious to find out more about his family and all that is happening, especially after such a purpose. But this is not the first thing started here as we discover a new threat that could become more prevalent in the future.

So yes, again I had a great time with this new volume and as always Amanda Stevens has really carried me away with her history. Amelia is easy to understand mainly because of what she must endure and we hope that she will have a nice ending despite all the events. Many new mysteries are set in motion and I look forward to read more!

Des années après leur mort massive, les disciples d’Ezra Kroll sont inquiets, leurs âmes tourmentées piégés dans les murs du cimetière Kroll, attendent d’être libérées par quelqu’un d’assez fort et intelligent pour résoudre le puzzle. Pour une raison quelconque, je suis convoquée dans ce lieu par les vivants et les morts. Chaque piste que je suis, chaque indice que je démêle me rapproche d’un tueur improbable et vers un destin qui va menacer ma santé mentale et mon avenir avec mon amour, John Devlin.

 

Avis : Cela fait longtemps que le dernier tome de la série Graveyard Queen est sorti mais nous savions que trois tomes sortiraient par la suite. Ayant passé un très bon moment avec les histoires précédentes, j’étais curieuse de pouvoir me plonger dans la suite des aventures d’Amelia Gray et de découvrir ce qu’Amanda Stevens nous réservait ! Il aura fallu attendre un peu de temps pour la sortie de ce quatrième volume mais c’est avec plaisir que je me suis tout de suite plongée dans l’histoire !

J’étais un peu anxieuse en commençant le roman parce que finalement j’ai eu beaucoup de mal à rentrer dans l’histoire au départ. J’ai trouvé que l’ensemble démarrait doucement et j’avais un peu peur que ça reste comme ça tout au long. Mais non, ce n’est pas le cas et l’auteure nous emporte une fois de plus dans son histoire qui nous tient en haleine tout au long des chapitres.

Maintenant que tous les problèmes en rapport avec Devlin ou en tout cas les plus urgents sont résolus, notre héroïne va se retrouver embarquée dans une toute nouvelle histoire. En effet, il semblerait qu’elle soit maintenant hantée par un fantôme malgré les règles qu’elle a essayé de suivre toute sa vie. Amelia va alors tout faire pour comprendre ce qu’il se passe et essayer de déterminer ce que tous les objets qu’elle trouve chez elle veulent dire. Mais c’est aussi dans ce contexte qu’elle va se retrouver plongée dans son passé, découvrant des révélations auxquelles elle ne s’attendait pas du tout (et nous non plus) en rapport à une sorte de village massacré en masse il y a plusieurs années. Appelée par ce lieu, elle a aussi été engagée pour restaurer le cimetière et en découvrir ses secrets. Pourtant, il se pourrait que ces secrets soient bien plus dangereux que prévu et qu’il pourrait amener une entité très puissante parmi les siens. En plus de cela, Amelia doit aussi gérer sa relation avec Devlin qui devient assez compliquée et c’est vrai que je suis vraiment curieuse d’en découvrir plus au sujet de sa famille et de tout ce qu’il se passe, notamment après une telle fin. Mais ce n’est pas la première chose amorcée, quand on découvre une nouvelle menace qui pourrait bien devenir plus présente dans le futur.

Donc oui, encore une fois j’ai passé un très bon moment avec ce nouveau volume et comme toujours Amanda Stevens m’a vraiment emportée avec son histoire. On comprend facilement Amelia et ce qu’elle doit endurer et on espère qu’elle aura une jolie fin malgré tous les événements. Pleins de nouveaux mystères sont mis en branle et j’attends avec impatience de pouvoir en lire plus !
