Can you present yourself in a few words?

A: I’m ML Brennan, the author of the Generation V series of urban fantasy novels. I have an MFA in fiction writing and a lifelong love of reading. The Generation V series was my first major publication, and the first book was released in 2013.

So Generation V, can you tell us more about your series?

A: The series is about Fortitude Scott, who starts out in the first book as a complete underachiever and slacker vampire, working minimum-wage jobs and trying to stay as far away from his family and the supernatural as possible. My vampires are also a bit different than the norm – they’re biologically driven, with a life cycle and a reproductive process – so, no immortality, just a really long life and an extensive maturation process. And Fort is your average 26-year-old guy, trying to figure out his place in the world with a completely useless degree and a biological destiny that terrifies him.

By the fourth book, Fort is starting to really find his place and his direction. He’s grown up a bit – emotionally and in a physical sense, but he’s holding onto his values with both hands. Events in the fourth book pull him further into the family machine. And, of course, Fort is accompanied by his best friend and kickass partner, kitsune shapeshifter Suzume Hollis.

How many books do you intend to write?

A: There are six books planned in the Generation V series right now.

Your fourth book is out, is it a turning point for you?

A: For the series, definitely yes. There are some extremely major changes that occur in this book, and while I’ve always had them in mind as goals for the series, they really change the landscape of this world going forward.

On a personal, writer level, I’d also say yes. I think a lot of readers expected the series to wrap up with the third book – I actually saw one reader who seemed really surprised that the series didn’t end the moment that Fort and Suzume decided to become a couple. But while Fort and Suze’s relationship has been a lot of fun, and certainly will continue to be in the future books, the series itself was never fundamentally about the romance between that pair.

So many revelations were given in this novel, many things we didn’t expect, can we expect more for the future?

Is there a moment you keep in mind while thinking about this new volume?

A: There are three major events in this book that really differentiate this one from any of the other novels in the series. One involves Madeline, and the other two are decisions that Fort makes. When I sat down to write Dark Ascension those were the three things that were basically the candy that enticed me through it.

The characters evolve a lot and we meet some new species each time, is it difficult to keep track of them?

A: Species creation is always one of the most fun things about writing a new book in this series. There are so many fun directions to go in, and an endless variety of myths and monsters to choose from. What I like to do is pick a monster that fits a niche that is currently unoccupied in the series, then do a lot of research into real-world animals and biology to round out that species and really make it function as a separate and distinct culture within the world of the series.

I don’t introduce more than one major species and one or two additional minor species in each book, so keeping track of them has been surprisingly easy. If I’d tried to introduce all of the species I currently have in the world in the first book, it would’ve been an absolute nightmare, but by slowly building them up and outwards, it has kept things in control.

Did you have everything in mind before writing Dark Ascension?

A: I wanted to take the status quo of the world at the end of Tainted Blood and set a bomb off under it.

Can you tell us a bit more about book 5?

A: The fifth book takes the major plot point in Dark Ascension a few steps forward. Without giving too much away – Fort and his allies might’ve bitten off a bit more than they could chew, and things get very complicated very quickly.

And, of course, Suzume will be back!

Do you have some new projects too?

A: Right now I’m working on the first book in a new series. I can’t reveal too many of the details yet, but it’s something that I’m extremely excited about, and which I think fans of the Generation V series will be very eager to read once more is revealed. As a hint – it’s something that I’ve been asked about since the first Generation V book was published.

Pouvez-vous vous présenter en quelques mots ?

A: Je suis ML Brennan, l’auteure de la série d’urban fantasy Generation V. J’ai un MFA en écriture et une longue vie de lecture. La série Generation V est ma première publication importante, et le premier livre est sorti en 2013.

Alors Generation V, pouvez-vous nous en dire un peu plus sur la série ?

A: La série se concentre sur Fortitude Scott, qui se trouve être un vampire fainéant et inachevé, travaillant au minimum, et essayant de rester aussi loin que possible de sa famille et de tout ce qui pourrait toucher au surnaturel. Mes vampires sont un peu différents de la normale – ils possèdent biologiquement un cycle de vie et un moyen de reproduction – alors pas d’immortalité, juste une longue vie et un procédé de maturation extensible. Et Fort est un garçon ordinaire de 26 ans, essayant de trouver sa place dans le monde avec un diplôme complètement inutile et une destinée biologique qui le terrifie.

D’ici le quatrième tome, Fort commence à trouver sa place et ce qu’il désire faire. Il a grandi un peu – émotionnellement et physiquement, mais il garde ses valeurs bien en main. Les événements qui ont lieu dans le quatrième volume le lancent dans les machinations de sa famille. Et, bien sûr, Fort est accompagné de sa meilleure amie et partenaire coriace, la change-forme kistune Suzume Hollis.

Combien de livres comptez-vous écrire ?

A: Il y a six livres prévus pour la série Generation V pour le moment.

Votre quatrième tome est sorti, est-ce un point décisif pour vous ?

A: Pour la série, oui. Il y a des changements majeurs, et même si je les avais en tête comme objectifs pour la série, ils changent vraiment le paysage du monde.

Du côté personnel, en tant qu’écrivain, je dirais que c’est aussi le cas. Je pense que beaucoup de lecteurs attendaient que la série se finisse avec le troisième tome – et j’ai vu un lecteur qui semblait surpris que la série ne finisse pas au moment où Fort et Suzume s’étaient mis en couple. Mais alors que la relation de Suze et Fort devient drôle, et continuera sûrement à l’être, la série n’a jamais été basée sur une romance entre les deux.

Y-a-t-il un moment que vous gardez en tête quand vous pensez à ce nouveau tome ?

A: Il y a trois événements majeurs dans ce livre qui le différencie vraiment des autres. Un implique Madeline, et les deux autres, des décisions de Fort prend. Quand je me suis assise et que j’ai écrit Dark Ascension, ce furent les trois choses qui m’ont fait avancer.

Les personnages évoluent beaucoup et nous rencontrons de nouvelles espèces chaque fois, est-ce difficile de tout garder en tête ?

A: La création des espèces est toujours la chose la plus sympa quand on écrit un nouveau livre dans la série. Il y a toujours plein de directions possibles, et une variété infinie de mythes et de monstres à choisir. J’aime choisir un monstre qui comble une niche qui n’est pas occupée dans la série, puis faire beaucoup de recherches sur les animaux et la biologie qui entoure cette espèce pour créer une culture distincte dans le monde de la série.

Je n’introduis pas plus d’une espèce majeure et deux mineures dans chaque livre, alors en garder la trace devient assez facile. Si j’essayais d’introduire toutes les espèces que j’ai dans le monde dès le premier livre, cela aurait été un cauchemar absolu, mais en les construisant doucement, je garde les choses sous contrôle.

Aviez-vous tout en tête avant d’écrire Dark Ascension?

A: Je voulais un status quo pour le monde à la fin de Tainted Blood et mettre une bombe pour la suite.

Pouvez-vous nous en dire plus au sujet du tome 5 ?

A: Le tome 5 prend la suite de l’intrigue majeure Dark Ascension. Sans en dire trop – Fort et ses alliés pourraient avoir à affronter plus qu’ils ne le peuvent, et les choses pourraient se compliquer très vite.

Et, bien sûr, Suzume sera de retour !

Avez-vous d’autres nouveaux projets ?

A: Je travaille maintenant sur le premier livre d’une nouvelle série. Je ne peux pas en dévoiler les détails, mais il y a quelque chose de très excitant, et dont je pense plaira aux fans de Generation V, une fois que ce sera révélé. Un indice, c’est quelque chose qu’on me demande depuis que le premier livre Generation V est publié.

Review: I absolutely love this series and I always look forwards the release of each new volume. So as soon as the announcement of this fourth volume was made, I eagerly awaited the opportunity to read an ARC of Dark Ascension. And what a pleasure to have the chance to get into the story and to find out what M.L. Brennan had reserved for us!

I admit that by starting the novel, I did not expect to see such a turning point in this book. Yes, all the things initiated in the first volumes are finally completed here or at least some answers are given for a fresh new start.

We thus follow Fort, always equal to himself, and of course always accompanied by the beautiful Suzume who is now his girlfriend. It’s always nice to see the two evolving together. While Fort is quite discreet, Suzume does not hesitate to provoke and acts as she wishes. Yes, it’s really a treat to see them growing together. Fort is also very lucky to have her, because many events are going to stand in his way here. Oh yes, it really will not be easy for them. As the summary presents it and as we have seen it in the previous volume, the decline of his mother is not an easy thing for the land and for the creatures living there… Then Fort and his brother and sister will have to handle whatever is happening and it’s really not easy especially when you know the divergent nature of the characters. In addition to all this, we can find a political intrigue and everyone is strangely turning toward Fort instead of Prudence or his brother. You will then understand that everything is very complex and it is impossible for the three to agree and thus to make a decision. Yet the consequences of this failure may well be disastrous.

But that’s not all because Fort will also have to face the effects of his vampire change, increasingly present and that will change him more than he could think. This is really not easy to manage. Yet it was fascinating to see him evolving and changing during the course of history, to accept his fate and to try to move ahead.

M. L. Brennan presents once again a very good novel, many things that we were expecting are here but new ones are also added, opening many possibilities for the future and I’m really curious to see what will happen to our little family.

Résumé (traduction personnelle) : Après avoir évité sa famille toute sa vie, Fort a découvert que travailler pour eux n’est finalement pas mal, même si sa mère, Madeline, est une terrifiante vampire meurtrière. Sa nouvelle carrière lui a donné un but et un salaire, et a même aidé sa partenaire renarde, kitsune Suzume, à accepter d’être sa petite amie. Dans l’ensemble, les choses vont bien.

Seulement, tout comme Fort tente de se familiariser à la gestion d’un empire surnaturel qui va de New Jersey à l’Ontario, la santé de Madeline commence à faire défaut, jetant Fort au milieu d’une bataille inconfortable et dangereuse pour la succession. Sa sœur aînée, Prudence, est déterminée à prendre le territoire. Mais Fort n’est pas le seul à se méfier de ses tendances sociopathes, et les alliés, anciens et nouveaux, se tournent vers lui pour empêcher Prudence de prendre le pouvoir.

Maintenant, comme Fort combat son passage imminent en vampire adulte, il doit aussi se battre pour empêcher Prudence de détruire le royaume de leur mère – avant qu’elle ne l’emmène avec elle ….

Avis : J’aime énormément cette série et j’attends toujours avec envie la sortie de chaque nouveau tome. Aussi, dès que l’annonce de ce quatrième volume s’est faite,  j’ai attendu impatiemment l’opportunité de pouvoir lire un ARC du Dark Ascension. Mais quel plaisir d’avoir eu la chance de me lancer dans l’histoire et de découvrir ce que M.L. Brennan réservait pour nous !

J’avoue qu’en commençant le roman, je ne m’attendais pas à voir un tel tournant dans ce livre. Oui, tout ce qui a été initié dans les premiers volumes est finalement achevé ici ou en tout cas certaines réponses sont données pour repartir de plus belle.

On retrouve donc Fort, toujours égal à lui-même, et bien sûr toujours aussi accompagné de la belle Suzume qui est maintenant sa petite amie. C’est toujours agréable de voir les deux évoluer ensemble. Alors que Fort est assez discret, Suzume n’hésite pas à provoquer et agir comme elle le désire. Oui, c’est vraiment un régal de les voir évoluer ensemble. Fort a d’ailleurs de la chance de pouvoir compter sur elle, car de nombreux événements vont se mettre en travers de sa route ici. Oh oui, ce ne sera vraiment pas de tout repos. Comme le dit le résumé et comme on a pu le voir dans le tome précédent, le déclin de sa mère n’est pas chose simple pour le territoire et les créatures qui le comportent… C’est alors à Fort et à son frère et sa sœur de gérer tout ce qu’il se passe et ce n’est vraiment pas simple surtout quand on connait les caractères divergents des personnages. Les intrigues politiques s’ajoutent à tout cela et tous se tournent étrangement vers Fort au lieu de Prudence ou son frère. Vous comprendrez alors que tout est très complexe et il est impossible aux trois de se mettre d’accord et donc de prendre une décision. Pourtant les conséquences de ce manquement pourraient bien être désastreuses.

Mais ce n’est pas tout parce que Fort va aussi devoir affronter les effets de son changement en vampire qui est de plus en plus présent et qui va le changer plus qu’il ne pouvait le penser. Ça aussi n’est vraiment pas simple à gérer. C’était pourtant toujours fascinant de le voir évoluer et changer au cours de l’histoire pour accepter son sort et essayer d’avancer un peu.

M.L. Brennan nous présente une fois encore un très bon roman, beaucoup de choses que nous attendions se passent ici mais de nouveaux s’ajoutent, ouvrant beaucoup de possibilités pour la suite et je suis vraiment très curieuse de pouvoir ce qu’il se passera pour la suite pour notre petite famille.

And as much as Fort is loath to get too deep into the family business, when his brother, Chivalry, is temporarily unable to run the territory, it’s up to Fort to keep things under control.

So when the leader of a powerful faction of shifters turns up murdered, Fort finds himself tracking down a killer while navigating dangerous rivalries, longtime grudges, and hidden agendas. Even with the help of his foxy kitsune sidekick, Suzume, he’ll need to pull out all the stops to hunt for the paranormal assassin.

But as he calls on fairies, witches, and ghouls for help, he discovers that the problem is much bigger than a single dead werebear. The supernatural community is preparing for a massive shift in power within the Scott family leadership—and Fort has landed right in the middle of the gathering storm.…

Review: Generation V is a series that I love and I was, as always, very impatient for this new volume. How not to fall under the spell of this anti-hero and Suze, this fun fox? They are both awesome and I had a great pleasure to follow them once again.

Fort has to manage the territory of his mother, especially since that the Chivalry’s wife is dead. But now a new story falls on him and not the least … In fact, the leader of a bear clan is found murdered and it is up to our young vampire and his acolyte Suze to find the person responsible. His sister Prudence would tell you that taking a random person and make an example would suffice but it is not how Fortitude works. Oh no, because he is determined to find the culprit whatever it might cost. However, this case is much more complicated than expected, evidences all revolve around a single person, but is it a trap? I admit that I was curious to see who the culprit of the story was, because, like our hero, it’s actually quite difficult for us to really know who the killer is. All names will pass through our head, changing and eventually I think that the author has perfectly managed to lead us by the nose. But I can tell you that in any case I really enjoyed this resolution and the reason behind this.

But it’s not just that because the decline of their mother is felt throughout the community and clans are all trying to organize themselves to see what would be most profitable for them thereafter. Surprisingly, a number of them are already turning to Fort, trying to feel the ground to see what can happen. But I confess that although I hope that Madeline will stay there much longer, I’m curious to see what will happen next as well. Even Chivalry is not really involved in the story, we also have the opportunity to see him several times, as well as Prudence elsewhere. After what had happened in the previous novel with his sister, I was eager to see how the two would behave and it is true that like Fort, I was surprised to see how the young woman cares for him. But it is true that Prudence is a very complex character, and it is very difficult to understand or predict how she will react to situations.

Anything else? Oh yes because Fort evolves much in this novel, especially since the beginning of his transformation. We see the changes here and it’s true that I was surprised to see what it would produce on his character. We feel bad with him, we feel guilty and we remain impressed by his new faculties. But in addition to this, we also have Suze. Ah I love this fox! She’s great and her actions and conversations are always humorous. Since the end of the previous book, I was curious to see how the “relationship” between the two would evolve and I must say that I was conquered by all!

So yes, I can tell you that once again I had a great time with this new story and I can only recommend you to try the series if you’re looking for an original and different vampires story. You will fall in love with Fort, Suze and his family and you will not want to let them go! I’m really excited to read more adventures with our heroes now (as always!).

Résumé (traduction personnelle) : Dans le troisième roman de Génération V, Fortitude Scott prouve que travailler avec la famille peut être mortel …

Ancien étudiant en cinéma, Fortitude Scott a finalement obtenu un emploi rémunéré. Malheureusement, «emploi» signifie se trouver avec un groupe de vampires sociopathes – sa famille. Et même si Fort répugne à entrer dans l’entreprise familiale, quand son frère, Chivalry, est temporairement dans l’incapacité de s’occuper du territoire, c’est à Fort de garder les choses sous contrôle.

Alors, quand le chef d’une faction puissante de transformateurs se fait assassiner, Fort se retrouve à traquer un tueur tout en naviguant entre les rivalités dangereuses, les rancunes de longue date, et des agendas cachés. Même avec l’aide de son acolyte de renard la kitsune, Suzume, il aura besoin de sortir tous les arrêts de chasses pour l’assassin paranormal.

Mais comme il demande de l’aide aux fées, sorcières et goules, il découvre que le problème est beaucoup plus grand qu’un seul ours-garou mort. La communauté surnaturelle se prépare à un déplacement massif de pouvoirs au sein du leadership de la famille Scott et Fort a atterri en plein milieu de l’orage. …

Avis : Generation V est une série que j’affectionne particulièrement et j’étais comme pour chaque sortie de nouveau tome, impatiente de pouvoir découvrir cette histoire. Comment ne pas tomber sous le charme de cet anti-héros et de Suze, cette renarde si maligne ? Ils sont tous les deux géniaux et j’ai pris un grand plaisir à les suivre encore une fois.

Fort doit gérer le territoire de sa mère, surtout depuis que la femme de Chivalry est décédée. Mais voilà qu’une nouvelle histoire lui tombe dessus et pas des moindres… En effet, le leader d’un clan ours est retrouvé assassiné et c’est à notre jeune vampire et à son acolyte Suze, de trouver le responsable. Sa sœur Prudence vous dirait bien que prendre une personne au hasard et en faire un exemple suffirait mais ce n’est pas comme ça que Fortitude travaille. Oh non, car il est bien décidé à trouver le coupable coûte que coûte. Pourtant cette affaire est bien plus compliquée que prévu, les preuves tournent toutes vers une seule et même personne, mais est-ce un piège ? J’avoue que j’étais assez curieuse de voir qui était le coupable de l’histoire, car, tout comme nos héros, il nous est finalement assez difficile de vraiment savoir qui est le tueur. Tous les noms y passent, changent et finalement je trouve que l’auteure était parfaitement parvenue à nous mener par le bout du nez. Mais je peux vous dire en tout cas que j’ai beaucoup aimé cette résolution et la raison derrière tout cela.

Mais il n’y a pas que ça car le déclin de leur mère se fait ressentir dans toute la communauté et les clans essaient tous de s’organiser de façon à voir ce qui leur serait le plus profitable par la suite. Etonnamment, un certain nombre d’entre eux se tournent déjà vers Fort, essayant de tâter du terrain pour voir ce qu’il peut se passer. Mais j’avoue que même si j’espère que Madeline restera là encore longtemps, je suis curieuse de voir ce qu’il se passera aussi par la suite. Même si Chivalry n’est pas vraiment très impliqué dans l’histoire, nous avons aussi l’occasion de le voir plusieurs fois, tout comme Prudence d’ailleurs. Après ce qu’il s’était passé dans le tome précédent avec sa sœur, j’étais impatiente de voir comment les deux allaient se comporter et c’est vrai que comme Fort, j’ai été surprise de voir comment la jeune femme s’occupait de lui. Mais il est vrai que Prudence est un personnage très complexe, et il est très difficile de la comprendre ou de prévoir comment elle réagira face aux situations.

Autre chose ? Oh oui parce que Fort évolue beaucoup dans ce roman, notamment depuis l’amorce de sa transformation. On en voit les changements ici et c’est vrai que j’ai été surprise de voir ce que cela produisait sur son personnage. On se sent mal avec lui, on culpabilise et on reste admiratif quant aux facultés qu’il acquière. Mais en plus de cela, il y a aussi Suze. Ah j’adore cette renarde ! Elle est géniale et ses actions et conversations sont toujours pleines d’humour. Depuis la fin du tome précédent, j’étais curieuse de voir comment la « relation » entre les deux allait évoluer et je dois dire que j’ai été conquise par le tout !

Donc oui, je peux vous dire qu’une fois encore j’ai passé un excellent moment avec cette nouvelle histoire et je ne peux que vous recommander d’essayer la série si vous êtes en quête d’une série de vampires originale et différente. Vous allez tomber sous le charme de Fort, Suze et sa famille et vous ne voudrez plus les laisser partir ! Je suis vraiment impatiente de pouvoir lire la suite des aventures de nos héros à présent (et comme toujours !).

Can you present you in a few words?

Sure! By day I teach college courses — basic composition and literature — but by night (and sometimes in the morning and afternoons) I write urban fantasy books. My debut was published in 2013 by Roc Books, and the second was published in January of this year. I’m in the rare and lucky position of getting two books published in one year, and the third book in the series will be released in November.

How would you describe the Generation V series?

Not your usual vampires, trickster kitsune, underemployment, Firefly & Star Trek references, family tension, violence, snark, and mystery all rolled into one ball.

How many books do you intend to write for the series?

Right now I’m contracted for four books, but I have storylines mapped out to a Book Six. Each book has both a standalone plot and some ongoing ideas, without any major cliffhangering, but I’m really excited about the direction I’m moving in.

How did you end up writing UF books? Is there any other genre that appeal to you?

I enjoy a lot of genres, and I’ve played around with worldbuilding in a lot of them. I read fantasy and a lot of its sub-genres, and I’m also a big fan of sci-fi. I’ve had a special enjoyment of UF ever since I read Emma Bull’s WAR FOR THE OAKS — I love the way she mashed together fey myth ideas with a gritty city environment and the up-and-coming band scene. I’d also read plenty of other authors who’ve done fantastic thing with UF — Patricia Briggs and Rob Thurman were also big influences on me.

What I like about UF is the chance to play with ideas and scenarios that are very current — my protagonist, Fortitude Scott, deals with the struggle of having a liberal arts degree that has relatively limited applications, and so he’s working a series of underpaying and dispiriting jobs. Money is a struggle for Fort in these books, as is figuring out who he wants to be as a person. At the same time, I like that UF seems to lend itself naturally to different variations on old classics like vampires or elves — I’ve had quite a lot of fun rethinking monsters and playing with old myths.

So Fortitude, where’d he come from?

The first thing I developed when I was setting up my series was how the vampire species would work — so I spent most of my time thinking about biology, predator-prey relationships, and how obligate sanguivores function (I know — exciting stuff). Once I had that down I knew how the family system worked — and I knew that my main character was going to be younger member of a vampire family. But I knew that there was a lot of vampire exhaustion in readers, so I also wanted this to be a vampire who played against our stereotypes. So whereas we think of vampires as being old and experienced, I wanted my vampire to be young and kind of a rube. We think of vampires as erotic and sexy — I made my vampire awkward and average-looking. So a lot of the basic parts of Fortitude came out of the circumstances of both the world I was building as well as what was going on in urban fantasy publishing trends at the time. At the same time, there was a lot of discussion about the kind of world that the Millennial was graduating into — huge student loan debts, a shrinking job market, and a whole lot of liberal arts degrees with limited workplace application. I wanted Fort to be dealing with these things.

Why choose to work with an anti-hero?

A few reasons. Firstly, I think anyone who wants to work in a genre that is as saturated as urban fantasy is right now needs to really sit down and seriously ask themselves what sets their book apart from the rest of the pack. A lot of the protagonists in urban fantasy are powerful, ass-kicking, sexy, and hugely ass-kicking. These can be plenty of fun, but I decided that I wanted a protagonist who was none of these things. It made things fun for me as a writer because Fort never had an easy way out of situations, and at the same time the smart thing would’ve been for him to hide out at home under his bed, yet I had to come up with an honest character-driven reason why he was choosing not to do that. Things that make the character walk a more difficult road than they otherwise would’ve are great for a writer, and ultimately benefit the reader. I think being a beta hero also made Fort’s voice sharper for me as the writer — to me it’s like the difference between Superman and Batman. Superman has all of these incredible alien powers — heat vision, flying, super strength — it kind of leaves him with a lot less to snark about. Batman, however, (if we ignore the whole billionaire playboy part of him) is a regular guy. A bank robber with a gun is no threat for Superman, but if Batman forgot his kevlar BatVest at home that day, this is sure a problem for him. And it gives him that extra edge of cynicism, and at the same time makes his decision to chase after the bad guys have more pathos to it than Superman’s.

Is it difficult to have many species in one book?

Yes and no. I like having a bunch of species, because it adds a lot of different viewpoints and agendas. The vampires have a very different worldview than, say, the kitsune or the ghouls, and a world that fit the vampires perfectly might not be to everyone else’s taste. Also, I’ve tried to introduce the different species somewhat slowly, so that the reader has a chance to get to know each one before I add in a new one.

But with having so many species, it’s important that they all balance out with each other. I tried to make my vampires as grounded in reality as I could, with a life-cycle and a biology that functioned, but that also set the standard for everyone else. So now whenever I bring in a new species, I have to figure out how they tick and their biology. Usually I try to pick a real-world counterpart that I can research and then pull parallels to.

What’s the hardest scene for you to write?

Any scene that introduces a new character is absolute misery for me. Initial reactions and dialogue, how to slide in basic physical description plus maintaining the mechanics of keeping it clear who is talking to who — it’s annoying, and it takes me a while to get it to where I’m happy with it. There was one scene in TAINTED BLOOD where I was introducing three new characters, and then three *other* new characters walked in through the door. After I was done with that I swore that I would never do something like that again.

What about the writing process most appeals to you? What is the most fun?

I think the planning phase is always what gets me the most excited. I write down my ideas on pieces of paper, then when I have a pile that’s high enough I start pulling them all together. Everything seems really open and full of possibility during that time — and if I want to go in a whole new direction, it’s as easy as just pulling out a fresh sheet of paper. I like the other parts of the process as well, but once I start working on the manuscript itself and the pages start accumulating it’s much harder to insert a new idea or shift directions. Nothing depresses me more than when I come up with a fantastic new idea, but I’m already 4/5ths of the way through a manuscript and will have to tuck the idea away for the next book.

What can you tell about the future books?

In every book Fort takes a certain amount of action, usually because he feels morally obligated to do so, and then in the next book those actions have repercussions that make his life more complicated. I’m really enjoying this situation because not only does it give me a canvass to work with that has increasingly high stakes to it, but it also continues to push Fort as a character into situations that give him more growth. I’m working on the fourth book right now, but at the same time I am on the edge of my seat to see what readers think about what I did in the third!

Do you have a favorite author? Or a favorite book?

Hundreds. Literally — I’m constantly running out of shelving space for my books.

If I had to pick a true favorite, I’d be stuck on this question for the next few hours in a relentless Sophie’s Choice kind of situation. But a few books that I’ve read and really enjoyed lately include V. E. Schwab’s VICIOUS, Max Gladstone’s FULL FATHOM FIVE, and Teresa Frohock’s MISERERE.

Pouvez-vous vous présenter en quelques mots ?

Bien sûr! Le jour, je donne des cours au collège – la base de la composition et la littérature – mais la nuit (et parfois le matin et l’après-midi) j’écris des livres de fantasy urbaine. Mon premier roman a été publié en 2013 par Roc Books, et le second a été publié en Janvier de cette année. J’ai eu la chance d’avoir deux livres publiés en un an, ce qui est assez rare, et le troisième livre de la série sera publié en Novembre.

Comment décririez-vous la série Génération V ?

Des vampires inhabituels, un kitsune filou, du sous-emploi, des références à Firefly et Star Trek, des tensions familiales, de la violence, du sarcasme, et du mystère, le tout dans un même ensemble.
 
Combien de livres comptez-vous écrire pour la série ?

En ce moment je suis sous contrat pour quatre livres, mais j’ai des scénarios en tête pour aller jusqu’à un sixième livre. Chaque livre est à la fois une intrigue autonome et des idées en cours, sans cliffhanger majeur, mais je suis vraiment excitée à propos de la direction que je vais prendre.
 
Comment êtes-vous arrivé à écrire des livres de fantasy urbaine ? Y a-t-il un autre genre qui vous attire ?

J’aime beaucoup de genres, et j’ai joué un peu avec la construction du monde dans un grand nombre d’entre eux. Je lis de la fantasy et beaucoup de ses sous-genres, et je suis aussi une grande fan de science-fiction. J’ai eu une attirance spéciale pour la fantasy urbaine depuis que j’ai lu WAR FOR THE OAKS d’Emma Bull- J’aime sa façon de mélanger ensemble les idées tirées de mythes féeriques avec un environnement urbain graveleux et l’ensemble des scènes de va-et-vient. Je lis aussi beaucoup d’autres auteurs qui ont fait des choses fantastiques avec la fantaisie urbaine – Patricia Briggs et Rob Thurman ont aussi eu de grandes influences sur moi.

Ce que j’aime à propos de la fantasy urbaine est la chance de pouvoir jouer avec des idées et des scénarios qui sont très actuels – mon protagoniste, Fortitude Scott, doit faire face au souci qui est d’avoir un diplôme en arts libéraux où les débouchés sont relativement limités, et donc il cumule toute une série d’emplois sous-payés et décourageants. L’argent est une lutte de tous les instants pour Fort dans ces livres, tout comme la question de savoir quel genre de personne il veut devenir. Dans le même temps, j’aime le fait que la fantaisie urbaine semble se prêter naturellement à différentes variations de vieux classiques comme les vampires ou les elfes – J’ai eu beaucoup de plaisir à repenser les monstres et à jouer avec les vieux mythes.
 
Donc Fortitude, d’où vient-il ?

La première chose que j’ai développé lorsque j’ai commencé à créer ma série était de savoir comment les différentes espèces de vampires allaient coexister – alors j’ai passé la plupart de mon temps à penser à la biologie, les relations prédateur-proie, et comment les sanguivores par obligation fonctionnent (je sais – des choses passionnantes). Une fois tout ça mis en place, je savais comment le système des familles fonctionnerait – et je savais que mon personnage principal allait être le plus jeune membre d’une famille de vampires. Mais je savais qu’il y avait beaucoup de lassitude de la part des lecteurs concernant les vampires, donc je voulais aussi qu’il soit un vampire qui joue contre nos stéréotypes. Ainsi, alors que les vampires nous font penser à des êtres vieux et expérimentés, je voulais que mon vampire soit jeune et en quelque sorte un peu rustre. Nous imaginons les vampires comme des êtres érotiques et sexy – J’ai fait de mon vampire un maladroit au look plutôt moyen. Ainsi, un grand nombre de pièces de base servant à la création de Fortitude viennent des circonstances issues à la fois du monde que j’étais en train de construire, ainsi que des tendances de l’édition en matière de fantasy urbaine à l’époque. A la même époque, il y avait beaucoup de discussions sur la question de savoir dans quel genre de contexte les futurs diplômés devront envisager pour leur avenir – d’énormes dettes consécutives aux prêts-étudiants, un marché du travail diminué, et tout un tas de diplômés en arts libéraux avec une offre de travail limitée. Je voulais Fort ait à gérer ce genre de choses.
 
Pourquoi choisir de travailler avec un anti-héros ?

Quelques raisons. Tout d’abord, je pense que toute personne qui veut travailler dans un genre qui est aussi saturé que fantasy urbaine l’est en ce moment, doit vraiment s’asseoir et se demander sérieusement ce qui distingue leur livre à par rapport au reste de la meute. Un grand nombre de protagonistes de fantasy urbaine sont puissants, botteurs de fesses, sexy, et extrêmement coriaces. Ces derniers peuvent être très amusants, mais j’ai décidé que je voulais un personnage qui n’était pas toutes ces choses. Cela a rendu les choses amusantes pour moi en tant qu’écrivain parce que Fort n’a jamais eu un moyen facile de se sortir des situations difficiles, et la chose la plus intelligente aurait été pour lui de se cacher à la maison sous son lit, et pourtant, j’en suis venue à mettre l’accent sur un honnête personnage, ce qui fait qu’il ne choisit jamais cette option. Les choses qui font qu’un personnage marche sur une route plus difficile que celle qu’il aurait dû emprunter sont parfaites pour un écrivain, et le lecteur en bénéficie aussi. Je pense que le fait d’être un bêta héros a également rendu la voix de Fort plus nette pour moi en tant qu’écrivain – pour moi, c’est comme la différence entre Superman et Batman. Superman possède tous ces pouvoirs incroyables d’origine extra-terrestre – vision thermique, voler, super force – de telle sorte que ça laisse beaucoup moins de place pour les propos sournois ou sarcastiques. Batman, cependant, (si l’on fait abstraction de toute la partie « playboy milliardaire ») est un gars ordinaire. Un braqueur de banque avec une arme à feu n’est pas une menace pour Superman, mais si Batman oublie que sa BatV en kevlar est à la maison ce jour-là, c’est sûr que ça sera un problème pour lui. Cela lui donne cet avantage supplémentaire sur le plan du cynisme, et en même temps rend sa décision de courir après les méchants plus pathétique que celle de Superman.
 
Est-il difficile d’avoir de nombreuses espèces dans un livre ?

Oui et non. J’aime avoir tout un tas d’espèces, car cela ajoute beaucoup de différents points de vue et d’agendas. Les vampires ont une vision du monde très différente de celle, par exemple, du kitsune ou des goules, et un monde qui satisferait parfaitement les vampires peut ne pas être du goût de tout le monde. Aussi, j’ai essayé de présenter les différentes espèces un peu lentement, de sorte que le lecteur ait une chance d’apprendre à connaître chacune d’entre elles avant que j’an ajoute une nouvelle.

Mais lorsqu’on a autant d’espèces, il est important que toutes s’équilibrent les unes avec les autres. J’ai essayé de faire en sorte que mes vampires soient les plus possibles ancrés dans la réalité, avec un cycle de vie et une biologie qui fonctionne, mais qui ont également établi la norme pour tout le monde. Alors maintenant, quand j’apporte une nouvelle espèce, je dois comprendre comment ils fonctionnent ainsi que leur biologie. Habituellement, j’essaie de choisir un homologue ou l’équivalent dans le monde réel, ainsi je peux faire des recherches et puis tirer des parallèles.
 
Quelle est la scène la plus difficile pour vous à écrire ?

Une scène qui introduit un nouveau personnage est une misère absolue pour moi. Les premières réactions et les dialogues, ou encore comment glisser vers la description physique de base en plus du maintien de la mécanique consistant à savoir clairement qui parle à qui – c’est ennuyeux, et il me faut un certain temps pour obtenir quelque chose qui me satisfait. Il y avait une scène dans TAINTED BLOOD où je présentais trois nouveaux personnages, puis trois *autres* nouveaux personnages entrèrent par la porte. Après en avoir fini avec eux, je me suis juré que je ne referais jamais quelque chose comme ça.

Qu’est-ce qui vous intéresse le plus dans le processus d’écriture ? Qu’est-ce qui est le plus amusant ?

Je pense que la phase de planification est toujours celle qui est la plus excitante. J’écris mes idées sur des bouts de papier, puis quand j’ai une pile qui est assez grande, je commence à les retirer puis je les mets ensemble. A ce moment-là, tout cela semble très ouvert et plein de possibilités – et si je veux aller dans une toute nouvelle direction, c’est aussi très facile, il suffit simplement de tirer une nouvelle feuille de papier. J’aime les autres parties du processus aussi, mais une fois que je commence à travailler sur le manuscrit en lui-même et que les pages commencent à s’accumuler, il est beaucoup plus difficile d’insérer une nouvelle idée ou de changer les directions. Rien ne me déprime plus que quand je viens avec une nouvelle idée fantastique, mais que je suis déjà aux 4/5e dans l’écriture du manuscrit et que je devrai donc garder l’idée dans un coin pour le prochain livre.
 
Que pouvez-vous nous dire sur les futurs livres ?

Dans chaque livre Fort prend part à un certain nombre d’actions, le plus souvent parce qu’il se sent moralement obligé de le faire, et puis dans le prochain livre ces mêmes actions ont des répercussions qui rendent sa vie plus compliquée. J’apprécie vraiment cette situation, car non seulement cela me donne une toile de fond sur laquelle travailler avec de plus en plus d’enjeux élevés, mais aussi cela permet de pousser le personnage de Fort dans des situations qui le feront gagner en maturité. Je travaille sur le quatrième tome en ce moment, mais en même temps je suis sur le bord de mon siège pour voir ce que les lecteurs pensent de ce que j’ai fait dans le troisième!
 
Avez-vous un auteur préféré ? Ou un livre préféré ?

Des centaines. Littéralement – Je suis constamment à court d’espace de rayonnage pour mes livres.

Si je devais choisir un vrai favori, je serais coincée sur cette question au cours des prochaines heures dans une implacable situation similaire à celle dans Le Choix de Sophie. Mais parmi quelques livres que j’ai lus et vraiment appréciés récemment on peut inclure VICIOUS deV. E. Schwab, FULL FATHOM FIVE de Max Gladstone et MISERERE de Teresa Frohock.

– Can you present youself and your family?

My mother is over six-hundred years old, and the most powerful vampire on the East Coast. She controls a good chunk of the Eastern seaboard in an iron fist, and she’s had a hand in every presidential election that this country has ever had. Before that she would meddle in town council meetings. She might look like a sweet little old woman, but she’s got fangs — literally, she’s got fangs. They look like she stole them from a tiger.

My sister Prudence dates back to the American Revolution, and her sociopathic tendencies work really well with her day job in the financial industry. She’s threatened to kill me before, and once tried to let someone else do the job, but lately she seems less homicidal and more curious, which is enough to terrify me.

My brother Chivalry is the one I’m closest to — he was born around the end of the Civil War, so he understands me a bit better, given that he’s the only other member of my family who doesn’t pre-date the cotton gin. I think of him as a very refined Bluebeard — he’s on wife #19.

And then there’s me — I’m 27, have a degree in film theory from Brown, and my latest field of employment is waiting tables. I happen to think there’s a moral issue with killing people — my family doesn’t really get it. They also don’t get why I’m a vegetarian.

– Is it difficult to come from a family like that?

Oh, absolutely. I’d seek therapy, but then my sister would probably kill my therapist.

– Is it really important for you to live away from them?

Even though it means living in a periodically-vermin-infested (the landlord just sprayed) apartment and depending on a revolving-door of horrendous roommates to make rent, yes. I would never want to live with my family again.

– If you could, would you prefer to be human?

Of course! I’m still transitioning (think of it as vampire puberty and you’re not far off), but how can I know that on the other side of it I’ll still be who I am, and feel the way I do now? How can I know that I’ll still have the same values and beliefs? My siblings couldn’t find empathy with a flashlight and a slide-ruler — I’m very afraid that I’ll lose that.
