Karen Memory by Elizabeth Bear

Synopsis: You ain’t gonna like what I have to tell you, but I’m gonna tell you anyway. See, my name is Karen Memery, like memory only spelt with an e, and I’m one of the girls what works in the Hôtel Mon Cherie on Amity Street. Hôtel has a little hat over the o like that. It’s French, so Beatrice tells me.”

Set in the late 19th century—when the city we now call Seattle Underground was the whole town (and still on the surface), when airships plied the trade routes, would-be gold miners were heading to the gold fields of Alaska, and steam-powered mechanicals stalked the waterfront, Karen is a young woman on her own, is making the best of her orphaned state by working in Madame Damnable’s high-quality bordello. Through Karen’s eyes we get to know the other girls in the house—a resourceful group—and the poor and the powerful of the town. Trouble erupts one night when a badly injured girl arrives at their door, begging sanctuary, followed by the man who holds her indenture, and who has a machine that can take over anyone’s mind and control their actions.  And as if that wasn’t bad enough, the next night brings a body dumped in their rubbish heap—a streetwalker who has been brutally murdered.

Review: After seeing a lot of very good reviews for this novel, I was very curious to dive myself in the history. I must say that Bear presents a very original story that takes us into the shallows of Seattle. Here, we have no real knight in white armor, but a story featuring courtesans, terrible pimps and an investigation by a man traveling all around the world.

I was quite surprised by the novel, it does not follow the tracks usually found. No, our heroine doesn’t begin a love affair with the officer she is helping. In fact, she starts a story with a girl she saves and takes under her wing. Yet their story is rather clumsy, and advances slowly, with a little something that evolves over the novel. I may have been carried away a little less by this relationship, but I still found it very touching.

Karen is a young woman who has gone through many trials. She does not go into the details of her work, but we see all what she had endured, the knit group of the girls who work together as a family. It was touching to see that they were actually a real family and remain desperate to help whatever happens. Besides Karen is herself determined to help this young Indian, Priya, who came seeking for a sanctuary in their hotel. Unfortunately her arrival brings many new problems that will only amplify. All this put Karen in the midst of danger and an investigation on a device that seems to be able to manipulate the minds and actions of each person. Alas, you can imagine that this machine should not end in the hands of a bad person.

It was a different and interesting novel. Our heroine is a very interesting character to explore and to see evolving. She is quite shy and yet does not hesitate to take action when necessary. She has dreams she wants to realize and we wish her to be so. We can easily get touched by her as we discover her more and more in the chapters. A novel worth reading it.

Situé à la fin du 19e siècle, lorsque la ville que nous appelons maintenant Seattle Underground était toute la ville (et toujours à la surface), lorsque les dirigeables sillonnaient les routes commerciales, où les chercheurs d’or se dirigeaient vers les domaines d’or d’Alaska, et la vapeur mécanique traquait le front de mer, Karen est une jeune femme seule qui essaie de faire au mieux de son état d’orpheline en travaillant dans le bordel de haute qualité de madame Damnable. À travers les yeux de Karen, nous apprenons à connaître les autres filles de la maison – un groupe plein de ressources – et les pauvres et les puissants de la ville. Un problème éclate un soir où une jeune fille grièvement blessée arrive sur le pas de leur porte, demandant sanctuaire, suivie par l’homme qui tient son acte de propriété, et qui a une machine qui peut manipuler l’esprit de quiconque et de contrôler leurs actions. Et comme si cela ne suffisait pas, la nuit suivante apporte un corps jeté dans leurs ordures, une prostituée qui a été brutalement assassinée.

Avis : Après avoir vu un grand nombre de très bons avis sur ce roman, j’étais très curieuse de pouvoir me plonger moi-même dans l’histoire. Je dois dire que Bear nous présente une histoire assez originale qui nous plonge dans les bas fonds de Seattle. Ici, nous n’avons aucun réel chevalier en armure blanche, mais une histoire mettant en scène des courtisanes, de terribles proxénètes et une enquête menée par un homme parcourant le monde.

J’ai été assez surprise par le roman, il ne suit pas les pistes que l’on retrouve habituellement. Non, notre héroïne ne commence par une histoire d’amour avec le policier qu’elle aide. En fait, elle commence une histoire avec une jeune fille qu’elle sauve et qu’elle prend sous son aile. Pourtant leur histoire est assez maladroite, avance doucement, présentant un petit quelque chose qui évolue au cours du roman. J’ai peut-être été moins emportée par cette histoire, mais je l’ai tout de même trouve très touchante.

Karen est une jeune femme qui a traversé un grand nombre d’épreuves. On ne rentre pas dans les détails de son travail mais on voit tout ce qu’elle endure à coté, le groupe soudé des filles qui travaillent ensemble comme une famille. C’était touchant de voir qu’elles étaient en fait une réelle famille et restaient prêtes à tout pour s’aider quoi qu’il se passe. D’ailleurs Karen est elle-même bien déterminée à aider cette jeune indienne Priya qui est venue cherche un sanctuaire dans leur hôtel. Hélas avec son arrivée les problèmes commencent et ne font que s’amplifier, plaçant Karen au milieu du danger et d’une enquête sur un appareil qui semble être capable de manipuler les esprits et les actions de chacun. Hélas, vous vous doutez que cette machine n’est pas entre les mains d’une personne bien intentionnée.

C’était un roman différent et intéressant. Notre héroïne est un personnage très intéressant à découvrir et à voir évoluer. Elle est assez timide et pourtant n’hésite pas à agir quand il le faut. Elle a des rêves qu’elle espère voir se réaliser et on souhaite avec elle que ça soit le cas. On arrive facilement à s’attacher à elle alors qu’on la découvre de plus en plus au cours des chapitres. Un roman intéressant à lire.

Review: When I heard about the book, I was immediately curious. The daughter of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde? How not to be? We all know this mythical character that is often found in TV shows, movies or books, and I was excited to be able to discover his daughter here. But it’s not just that because I had two other reasons that made me want to get into this first volume. First of all the significant number of very good reviews about the novel! Oh yes, because everyone made me impatient to be able to discover the story. Then we have the author. Viola Carr is a pseudonym for Erica Hayes, someone who always makes me have a great time with her books. So yes, I was waiting to read this first volume to discover the history and to know how it really was.

So we discover Eliza, a young woman well on all reports, if not her work that does not glorify her in the eyes of society. Yes, because instead of sitting quietly at home and seeking for a husband, our heroine is a doctor who works as an investigator with the police, trying to catch the killers on the loose. But Eliza hides many secrets, some that could put her life in danger. In a world where magic is condemned and where the alchemists and other people practicing magic are burned without distinction, our doctor has a second whole person in herself … A person who can take control of her body, transforming her into a new woman who has her own objectives. So yes, Eliza must be very careful, as well as her alter ego Lizzie. Yet they form together a wonderful team, each can help the other, but still remaining always in competition.

It was fascinating to discover that character, understand her different aspects, to see what Lizzie and Eliza were hidding. They are both complementary, two sides of the same person and even if they sometimes seem to hate each other, rebel against one another, they are also there to support and protect the other.

In terms of history, many things happen in the novel. Oh yeah! A member of the Royal Society is in the city and seems strangely present around our heroine. Alas, this association eradicates people like herself, and Eliza, as well as Lizzie, will have to implement all their skills to keep their secret. Yet they may well be surprised by this man. It must be said that Captain Lafayette also seems to have different facets while he meets either of the girls. This man hides a dark past and very mysterious drawings but I was very curious to discover everything. I also confess that the revelations about him really surprised me.

Eliza will have to investigate one of the strangest murders here. Young women are found dead, bits of their body missing, all with rather strange clues. Whatever happens, the young woman is determined to understand what is happening, although it makes her face her own demons. We have many surprises in the novel, revelations that leave us shocked and I think we can only be completely fascinated by the story and the characters. Viola Carr has created a fantastic novel that carries us over the chapters. I am very happy to have had the chance to read it all and I’m more than impatient to read on! Oh yes, the wait is going to be complicated. If you like mysteries, secrets, magic and stories with a unique note, do not hesitate, you will be delighted.

Avis : Quand j’ai entendu parler du livre, j’ai tout de suite été très curieuse. La fille de Dr. Jekill et M. Hyde ? Comment ne pas l’être. Nous connaissons tous ce personnage mythique que l’on retrouve souvent dans des séries, des films ou des livres et j’étais impatiente de pouvoir découvrir sa jeune fille ici. Mais ce n’est pas que ça car deux autres raisons m’ont donné envie de me lancer dans ce premier tome. Tout d’abord le nombre significatif de très bons avis autour du roman ! Oh oui, car chacun m’a donné très envie de pouvoir découvrir l’histoire. Ensuite, il y a l’auteure. Viola Carr est un pseudonyme pour Erica Hayes, une personne qui me fait toujours passer un excellent moment avec ses livres. Alors oui, j’attendais de lire ce premier volume pour découvrir toute l’histoire et savoir ce qu’il en était réellement.

Nous découvrons donc Eliza, une jeune femme bien sur tous rapports, si ce n’est son travail qui ne la glorifie pas aux yeux de la société. Oui car au lieu de rester tranquillement à la maison et de chercher un mari, notre héroïne est docteur et travaille avec la police comme enquêtrice, essayant d’attraper les tueurs en liberté. Mais Eliza cache de nombreux secrets, certains qui pourraient mettre sa vie en grand danger. Dans ce monde où la magie est condamnée et où les alchimistes et autres personnes pratiquant la magie sont brulés sans distinction, notre docteur possède une deuxième personne à part entière en elle… Une personne qui peut prendre le contrôle de son corps, la transformant en une toute nouvelle femme qui possède ses propres objectifs. Alors oui Eliza doit faire très attention, tout comme son alter égo Lizzie. Pourtant elles forment ensemble une sacrée équipe, chacune pouvant aider l’autre, mais restant tout de même toujours en compétition.

C’était fascinant de découvrir ce personnage, de comprendre ses différentes facettes, de voir ce que cachaient Lizzie et Eliza. Elles sont toutes les deux complémentaires, deux parties d’une même personne et même si elles semblent parfois se détester,  se rebeller l’une contre l’autre, elles sont aussi là pour se soutenir et se protéger.

Pour ce qui est de l’histoire, de nombreuses choses se passent au cours du roman. Oh oui ! Un membre du Royal Society se trouve en ville et semble étrangement tourner autour de notre héroïne. Hélas, cette association éradique les personnes comme elle, et Eliza, tout comme Lizzie, vont devoir mettre en œuvre toutes leurs compétences pour garder leur secret. Pourtant elle pourrait bien être surprise par cet homme. Il faut dire que le Capitaine Lafayette semble lui aussi présenter des facettes différentes dès qu’il rencontre l’une ou l’autre des filles. Cet homme cache un passé sombre et des dessins très mystérieux et j’étais très curieuse de découvrir ce qu’il en était exactement. J’avoue d’ailleurs que les révélations à son sujet m’ont vraiment surprise.

Eliza va devoir enquêter sur une affaire des plus étranges ici. Des jeunes femmes sont retrouvées mortes, des bouts de leur corps manquant, le tout avec des indices assez étranges. Quoi qu’il se passe, la jeune femme est bien décidée à comprendre ce qu’il se passe, bien que cela la fasse affronter ses propres démons. Nous avons de nombreuses surprises au cours du roman, des révélations qui nous laissent interdites et je pense que l’on ne peut qu’être complètement fasciné par l’histoire et les personnages. Viola Carr a créé un roman fantastique qui nous transporte au cours des chapitres. Je suis très heureuse d’avoir eu la chance de découvrir le tout et je suis plus qu’impatiente de pouvoir lire la suite ! Oh oui, l’attente va être compliquée. Si vous aimez les mystères, les secrets, la magie, et les histoires qui ont une note unique, n’hésitez plus, vous serez enchantés.

Review: The first two novels in the series were both great and I was curious about this third installment. Well I must say that I do not remember a lot of things about the end of the previous volume, and I was a little anxious at the beginning of the story, however, everything finally came back pretty fast.

The end of the previous volume had left Elle and Hugh in a rather delicate situation. Oh yes, because Hugh has disappeared without a trace and Chance must now try to find out what she wants to do with her life. But our heroine is not a woman to be pushed and while returning from a mission with an archaeologist, they are both attacked by Logan Dashwood, a character previously discovered and who is determined to teach her a lesson. But nothing goes as planned and the doctor is killed as well as some crew members. Enclosed by Logan on his airship, Elle will have no choice but to agree to participate in the life of the crew while waiting to find a way to escape. But it’s not only that because a hellhound is after her, a price is on her head, and Patrice is determined to recover her whatever it might cost. But Elle has a mission, and she wants to find a lost temple to find the solution that can save her husband. But nothing will happen as planned, and Logan could also complicate matters.

I had a great time with the novel. It’s pretty sad to see the situation in which Elle is found. She does not know how to handle everything and whatever she does, people around her die and the situation only gets worse each time. But her purpose is well defined and whatever happens it is essential that she reaches her answers. Yet it also hurt my heart to see that she is lost in her life, she does not know what she will become and has the impression of having already lost everything. We do not see a lot Hugh here, even if he made ​​a few appearances but it certainly that he still cares about the young woman and hopes she will leave him behind. And then we have … Logan, the captain pirate who kidnaps her. Ah, it’s difficult at first to appreciate him and yet he takes a place in our heart gradually. Despite his status as a pirate, he is courageous, fair and always tries to do the best. He knows that our heroine is a walking danger, but he will always be there for her, even if he is taken several times in fairly complicated situations. In all cases, it is true that I have succumbed to the charm of this pirate, but between him and Hugh, I’m curious to see what she will do. All sounds very complicated, but we must say that our heroine is accustomed to difficult situations, and the end of the novel puts her in a very difficult position with respect to her future. I can not wait to see what happens afterwards.

I think this volume was a little above the other and all really intrigued me. I was very curious to see what would happen and the author has presented here some very nice ideas. It’s always interesting to follow the Elle’s adventures and I’m curious to learn more. A new good novel.

Review: Les deux premiers romans de la série m’avaient fait passer un très bon moment et j’étais curieuse de découvrir ce troisième volet. Bon il faut dire que je ne me rappelais pas énormément de choses de la fin exacte du tome précédent et j’étais un peu anxieuse au début de l’histoire, pourtant finalement, tout est revenu assez vite.

La fin du tome précédent avait laissé Elle et Hugh dans une situation assez délicate. Oh oui, car Hugh a disparu sans laisser de trace et Chance doit maintenant essayer de découvrir ce qu’elle désire faire de sa vie. Mais notre héroïne n’est pas femme à se laisser faire et rentrant d’une mission avec une archéologue, elles se font toutes deux attaquer par Logan Dashwood, un personnage découvert précédemment et qui est bien décidé à donner une leçon à Elle. Mais rien ne se passe comme prévu et le docteur est tué tout comme certains membres de l’équipage après elle. Enfermée par Logan sur leur dirigeable, Elle ne va avoir d’autre choix que d’accepter de participer à la vie de l’équipage le temps de trouver un moyen de s’échapper. Mais s’il n’y avait que cela car un chien de l’enfer est à sa recherche, sa tête a été mise à prix, et Patrice est bien décidé à la récupérer coûte que coûte. Pourtant Elle a une mission, et elle désire retrouver un temple perdu pour essayer de trouver la solution qui puisse sauver son mari. Mais rien ne se passera comme prévu, et Logan pourrait bien lui aussi compliquer l’affaire.

J’ai passé un très bon moment avec le roman. C’est assez triste de voir la situation dans laquelle Elle se retrouve. Elle ne sait pas comment gérer le tout et quoi qu’elle fasse les gens autour d’elle meurent et la situation ne fait que s’empirer à chaque fois. Mais son but est bien défini et quoi qu’il se passe il faut absolument qu’elle parvienne à avoir ses réponses. Pourtant ça fait aussi du mal au cœur de voir qu’elle est perdue dans sa vie, qu’elle ne sait pas ce qu’elle va devenir et qu’elle a l’impression d’avoir déjà tout perdu. Nous ne voyons pas énormément Hugh ici, même s’il fait quelques apparitions mais il est certain qu’il tient toujours à la jeune femme et il espère qu’elle le laissera derrière lui. Et puis il y a Logan… ce capitaine, pirate qui kidnappe Elle. Ah c’est difficile au départ de l’apprécier et pourtant il se fait une place dans notre cœur petit à petit. Malgré sa condition de pirate, il est courageux, juste et essaie toujours d’agir au mieux. Il sait que notre héroïne est un danger ambulant, mais il sera toujours là pour elle, même si elle le met plusieurs fois dans des situations assez compliquées. Dans tous les cas, c’est vrai que j’ai succombé au charme de ce pirate, mais entre lui et Hugh, je suis curieuse de voir ce qu’Elle fera. Le tout semble très compliqué mais il faut dire que notre héroïne est habituée aux situations difficiles, et la fin du roman la met dans une position très délicate par rapport à son futur. Je suis impatiente de voir ce qu’il se passera par la suite.

Je pense que ce tome était un peu au-dessus des autres et le tout m’a vraiment intrigué. J’étais très curieuse de voir ce qui allait se passer et l’auteure a présenté ici de très jolies idées. C’est toujours très intéressant de suivre les aventures d’Elle et je suis curieuse de pouvoir en savoir plus. Un nouveau bon roman.

Review: When I saw the cover I immediately thought of a steampunk novel and I love this genre. I did not know anything about the author, but it’s true that I love discovering new writers and it was a good opportunity here. But I think my expectations were perhaps a little too high…

Octovia is a Medician, a person capable of using herbs and incantations to save anyone harmed, whatever the reason. But her secret must be hidden because many people might use her for disreputable purposes. Embarking on an airship to visit several cities and help those in need, she certainly does not expect to end up in a story that is completely beyond her. Indeed, it seems that many people are interested in this girl. Between a cabin’s colleague who is much more important than what she seems, a stuart who hides his true identity and a gremlin that we can only adore, Octavia will have many things to do.

I’m sad to say that I was not hooked by the story or the characters and I struggled to finish the book. The idea is really nice and I loved the gremlin and its attachment to the characters but it’s true that the rest failed to touch me particularly. I do not know what point really bothered me, and I think unlike me, other readers will be delighted. By cons I was quite surprised at the end of the novel and it’s true that the story has carried me a little more at that time. It’s pretty rare when I can not get into a novel like that, but I think this story was not made ​​for me. I think it will, however for others.
