The Up-and-Under, Book 3

Synopsis: When the improbable road leaves Avery and Zib in the land of Air and at the mercy of the Queen of Swords, escape without becoming monsters may be impossible. But with the aid of the Queen’s son, the unpredictable Jack Daw, they may emerge with enough of their humanity to someday make it home. Their journey is not yet over; the dangers are no less great.

Review: These novels are like little candies, original tales like no other, which allow to have a good time.

We find our two heroes: Zib and Avery for the continuation of their adventures. This time they will meet the Queen of Swords who has a passion: creating monsters. It is also in this context that they will meet her son who will help them: Jack.

These novels are very poetic and it is always pleasant to discover and read them. The author has an amazing pen and I wonder if our two children will ever get home.

The Up-and-Under, Tome 3

Résumé (traduction personnelle) : Lorsque l’improbable route laisse Avery et Zib au pays de l’Air et à la merci de la Reine des Épées, il leur sera peut-être impossible de s’échapper sans devenir des monstres. Mais avec l’aide du fils de la reine, l’imprévisible Jack Daw, ils peuvent s’en sortir avec suffisamment d’humanité pour rentrer un jour chez eux. Leur voyage n’est pas encore terminé ; les dangers n’en sont pas moins grands.

Avis : Ces romans sont comme des petites bonbons, des contes originaux comme nuls autres, qui permettent de passer un bon moment.

Nous retrouvons nous deux héros : Zib et Avery pour la suite de leurs aventures. Ils vont rencontrer cette fois-ci la Reine des Epées qui a une passion : créer des monstres. C’est aussi dans ce cadre qu’ils vont rencontrer son fils qui les aidera : Jack.

Ces romans sont très poétiques et c’est toujours agréable de les découvrir et de les lire. L’auteure a une plume assez étonnante et je me demande si nos deux enfants arriveront un jour à rentrer chez eux.

The Luminaries, Book 1

Synopsis: Hemlock Falls isn’t like other towns. You won’t find it on a map, your phone won’t work here, and the forest outside town might just kill you.

Winnie Wednesday wants nothing more than to join the Luminaries, the ancient order that protects Winnie’s town—and the rest of humanity—from the monsters and nightmares that rise in the forest of Hemlock Falls every night.

Ever since her father was exposed as a witch and a traitor, Winnie and her family have been shunned. But on her sixteenth birthday, she can take the deadly Luminary hunter trials and prove herself true and loyal—and restore her family’s good name. Or die trying.

But in order to survive, Winnie enlists the help of the one person who can help her train: Jay Friday, resident bad boy and Winnie’s ex-best friend. While Jay might be the most promising new hunter in Hemlock Falls, he also seems to know more about the nightmares of the forest than he should. Together, he and Winnie will discover a danger lurking in the forest no one in Hemlock Falls is prepared for.

Not all monsters can be slain, and not all nightmares are confined to the dark.

Review: I’ve heard a lot about the author, but I don’t think I’ve ever tried one of her books.

The Luminaries is the first book in a new series, and I have to say that I was immediately intrigued by the synopsis.

Winnie and her family were exiled when their people discovered that our heroine’s father was a spy. Since then, they have all been trying to make amends, to no avail. But Winnie’s 16th birthday is coming up and if she can pass the trials of Luminaries, she can help her family reclaim their old life. But these tests are dangerous and she is not trained. Still, she goes in without a second thought, hoping that she will succeed in killing a nightmare in the forest. Unfortunately, her ordeal doesn’t go as planned and she soon discovers that the woods are home to a much more terrible creature, one that no one believes in.

I had a great time with the novel. Winnie is determined to change her life and do what it takes, even if it’s far from easy. She’s going to team up with an old friend who ditched her when she was exiled so he can help her train. And then there’s the werewolf whose behavior is strange and who I had my suspicions about from the beginning.

This was a nice first volume. Several stories were started and I am curious to see where the author will take us.

Mais le jour de son seizième anniversaire, elle peut passer les épreuves mortelles des chasseurs de Luminaries et prouver sa loyauté et sa fidélité – et restaurer la réputation de sa famille. Ou mourir en essayant.

Mais pour survivre, Winnie fait appel à la seule personne qui peut l’aider à s’entraîner : Jay Friday, un bad boy et l’ancien meilleur ami de Winnie. Jay est peut-être le nouveau chasseur le plus prometteur de Hemlock Falls, mais il semble aussi en savoir plus qu’il ne le devrait sur les cauchemars de la forêt. Ensemble, Winnie et lui vont découvrir un danger qui rôde dans la forêt et auquel personne à Hemlock Falls n’est préparé.

Tous les monstres ne peuvent pas être tués, et tous les cauchemars ne vivent pas dans l’obscurité.

Avis : J’ai beaucoup entendu parler de l’auteure, mais je ne crois pas avoir déjà tenté un de ses livres.

The Luminaries est le premier tome d’une nouvelle série, et je dois bien dire que je résumé m’a tout de suite intriguée.

Winnie et sa famille ont été exilées quand leur peuple a découvert que le père de notre héroïne était un espion. Depuis, ils essaient tous de se racheter, en vain. Mais les 16 ans de Winnie arrivent et si elle parvient à passer les épreuves de Luminaries, elle pourrait aider sa famille à récupérer leur ancienne vie. Mais ces épreuves sont dangereuses et elle n’est pas entraînée. Pourtant, elle se lance sans réfléchir, en espérant qu’elle parviendra à tuer un cauchemar dans la forêt. Malheureusement, son épreuve ne va pas se passer comme prévu et elle va vite découvrir que les bois abritent une créature bien plus terrible, une créature à laquelle personne ne croit.

J’ai passé un bon moment avec le roman. Winnie est déterminée à changer sa vie et à faire ce qu’il faut pour ça, même si c’est loin d’être simple. Elle va s’allier à un ancien ami qui l’a laissée tomber quand elle a été exilée pour qu’il l’aide à s’entraîner. Et puis, il y a le loup-garou dont le comportement est étrange et sur lequel j’ai eu des soupçons dès le début.

C’était un premier tome bien sympathique. Plusieurs histoires ont été amorcées et je suis curieuse de voir où l’auteur va nous mener.

Review: This is the conclusion of the series featuring our dear Bryn. It doesn’t feel like an ending but the author has created a whole universe and written trilogies for each of the characters. And I’m sure it’ll be very cool to discover each of our heroine’s friends.

In this volume, Cerys has been kidnapped by a demon and is stuck in one of the underworlds. But Bryn won’t give up on her! Determined to save her, she teams up with Gray (ah Gray, that sexy vampire!) and her friends (though it may not go as planned), to find their missing friend. But if in the idea it seems simple enough, doing it will not be at all!

There are a few too easy strings in this book that sometimes surprised me a bit, but this aside, I had a good time. It was fun to catch up with all the characters and I enjoyed seeing the relationship between Gray and Bryn evolve a bit. I look forward to reading more about all the girls!

Bryn Morrow, Tome 3

Résumé: Tant qu’on a une baguette, rien n’est perdu.

Mon secret a été révélé, mais je suis toujours la bienvenue à l’académie, où je suis formée pour devenir la prochaine gardienne de l’Agence des Forces Magiques. Pour la première fois de ma vie, j’ai l’impression d’avoir trouvé ma place.

Jusqu’à ce que, par ma faute, l’une de mes colocataires disparaisse.
Je mène la charge pour la retrouver, repoussant les limites de mes capacités magiques tout en résistant à mon attirance pour Gray, le vampire sexy.

Le temps nous est compté alors que nous nous précipitons vers l’un des Mondes Souterrains les plus dangereux dans un effort pour secourir ma colocataire avant qu’il ne soit trop tard.

Pourrai-je utiliser ma puissante magie pour la sauver sans pour autant me perdre… ou perdre la vie ?

Avis : Voilà la conclusion de la série mettant en scène notre chère Bryn. On sent que ce n’est pas une vraie fin, l’histoire ne se termine pas réellement parce que l’auteure a créé tout un univers et écrit des trilogies pour chacun des personnages. Et je suis sûre que ça sera très sympa de découvrir chacune des amies de notre héroïne.

Dans ce tome, Cerys a été enlevée par un démon et se retrouve coincée dans un des mondes sous-terrain. Mais Bryn ne l’abandonnera pas ! Bien décidée à la sauver, elle fait équipe avec Gray (ah Gray, ce vampire sexy !) et ses amies (même si ça ne se passera peut-être pas comme prévu), afin de retrouver leur amie disparue. Mais si dans l’idée ça semble assez simple, le faire ne le sera pas du tout !

Il y a des ficelles un peu trop faciles dans ce tome qui m’ont parfois un peu surprise, mais ceci mis à part, j’ai passé un bon moment. C’était un plaisir de retrouver tous les personnages et j’ai apprécié de voir la relation entre Gray et Bryn évoluer un peu. J’attends de lire la suite sur toutes les filles !

Review: I really enjoy the author’s poetic novels. These tales are very different from what we usually find and I was thrilled to see her come out with a new one.

Melanie has an unusual illness, she knows she is going to die, but she has her boyfriend, Harry, to support her. They have known each other for a long time and have known all along that they will end their lives together. But when Melanie and Harry discover they are in the running for the Winter and Summer crown, everything changes! They will embark on an adventure that will force them to face all the wannabes, but also to accept a world they didn’t know.

As I said, it was a poetic, very pretty, story and I was delighted to discover it. The characters are quite touching, especially Melanie who has always lived with illness and who will finally understand her special condition.

A beautiful novel.
