Wicked Ever After by Delilah S. Dawson

Blud, Book 4

Synopsis: Ever since landing in the magical world of Sang and falling in love with dashing ringmaster Criminy Stain, Tish has been waiting for the axe to fall. Until her dying grandmother’s last breath on Earth, Tish can’t bring herself to give up her all-too human frailty and commit to life on Sang as a youthful, long-lived Bludman like her handsome husband. But when a peculiar twist of fate delivers Tish’s grandmother to Sang, an unexpected chain of events forces Tish and Criminy to embark on one last wild adventure. From old friends to new and into the lair of terrifying enemies, the couple’s love and longevity will be pushed to the brink by each harrowing encounter. Is blud thicker than blood, and can Tish and Crim find their wicked ever after?

Review: Blud is a series that I like and it’s true that when I saw the release of this Volume 4, I was very intrigued. You should know that this novel is closing a series that I took a great pleasure to follow (although I admit shamefully that I did not read volume 3). In any case I was pleasantly surprised to find the main characters of the first volume and to see what they had become. But that’s not all, because we also have the chance to see people we met in the previous volumes.

So as I said, we find Tish and Criminy, always together and, she, always human. Thanks to her ability to return to her world, she takes care of her dying grandmother. Her condition worsening, the young woman has no better idea than to decide to change her into a bludman and so to keep her relative at her side forever. Alas, this change will not have the desired effect when the young Nana returned decides that she wants to direct her life as she wishes and that Tish is only a remnant of her past. Tish and her husband will then unite together to try to pursue her last family member our heroine refuses to quit.

It was very nice to see the characters that I appreciated. Admittedly they are my favorites characters and finding them again can only be a pleasure. We can read the story fairly quickly but it’s true that this allows us to see the evolution of the characters and to have a last glimpse of the fantasy world that the author has created. A very good book to discover!

Wicked Ever After de Delilah S. Dawson (VO)

Blud, Tome 4

Hit by Delilah S. Dawson

Hit, Book 1

Synopsis: NO ONE READS THE FINE PRINT.

The good news is that the USA is finally out of debt. The bad news is that we were bought out by Valor National Bank, and debtors are the new big game, thanks to a tricky little clause hidden deep in the fine print of a credit card application. Now, after a swift and silent takeover that leaves 9-1-1 calls going through to Valor voicemail, they’re unleashing a wave of anarchy across the country.

Patsy didn’t have much of a choice. When the suits showed up at her house threatening to kill her mother then and there for outstanding debt unless Patsy agreed to be an indentured assassin, what was she supposed to do? Let her own mother die?

Patsy is forced to take on a five-day mission to complete a hit list of ten names. Each name on Patsy’s list has only three choices: pay the debt on the spot, agree to work as a bounty hunter, or die. And Patsy has to kill them personally, or else her mom takes a bullet of her own.

Since yarn bombing is the only rebellion in Patsy’s past, she’s horrified and overwhelmed, especially as she realizes that most of the ten people on her list aren’t strangers. Things get even more complicated when a moment of mercy lands her with a sidekick: a hot rich kid named Wyatt whose brother is the last name on Patsy’s list. The two share an intense chemistry even as every tick of the clock draws them closer to an impossible choice.

Review: I appreciate the novels by Delilah S. Dawson and when I saw the release of this one, I was immediately intrigued. The author is unparalleled to create different and dark atmospheres and she really managed to do something very interesting here.

The world has changed and the United States have discovered the perfect solution to get rid of the debt they have accumulated over the years: Valor National Bank. This company has just bought everything, emergency numbers, police and other important institutions in the eyes of people. That’s where the “suits” enter, the people who work for the bank and now take in account the small characters of the credit card applications contracts to demand all the money that the customers asked them. Our heroine, Patsy finds herself embarked on a crazy story in which she would not have liked to fall. Her mother with debts, she receives the same choice that she must offer the people on her list: to pay the amount borrowed at once, to work for 5 days for the bank as a hitman or to be killed instantly. A very difficult choice… But Patsy wants to live, she wants her mother to live, and she is desperate to keep it that way. Yet she would never have expected to see the persons of her list related to her in one way or another. How is this possible? But in addition to that, she will work with Wyatt, an initially unwanted sidekick but who will eventually become a rock and a pillar in her life. But now, Wyatt also has an interest in this story, and while he works with Patsy, his brother is the last name on the list and he is determined to prevent her from killing him.

We find ourselves embedded in a story where Patricia is trying to become someone she hates and must finally face her past, her desires, her friends and her family. Surprisingly, she will also learn a little more about her father disappeared since her 4 years old. It was interesting to see how people will eventually be manipulated without trying to really rebel. This is one of the things I had a problem with, the inconsistencies about certain subjects. This can range from a lack of data on the past of the characters, the Patsy’s father or even about the actions of the protagonists. We’re even left with a little feeling of incomplete that is quite disturbing because we have many issues in the history and ultimately we really get no response. Maybe is it the goal and we’ll have all that in a second volume but I think it lacked a little something more here.

Patsy is a girl who will do anything to survive and she shows it precisely here even if it is really not easy. I loved that Wyatt was also present for her when she needed it, and yet it’s hard to really trust him because we feel that he’s hiding something without really understanding what it is exactly.

In any case I still had a good time and I’m curious to read more to have all the answers to my questions that I look forward to! Many things that I want to understand!

Hit de Delilah S. Dawson (VO)

Hit, Tome 1

Servants of the Storm by Delilah S. Dawson

Synopsis: A year ago Hurricane Josephine swept through Savannah, Georgia, leaving behind nothing but death and destruction — and taking the life of Dovey’s best friend, Carly. Since that night, Dovey has been in a medicated haze, numb to everything around her.

But recently she’s started to believe she’s seeing things that can’t be real … including Carly at their favorite cafe. Determined to learn the truth, Dovey stops taking her pills. And the world that opens up to her is unlike anything she could have imagined.

As Dovey slips deeper into the shadowy corners of Savannah — where the dark and horrifying secrets lurk — she learns that the storm that destroyed her city and stole her friend was much more than a force of nature. And now the sinister beings truly responsible are out to finish what they started.

Dovey’s running out of time and torn between two paths. Will she trust her childhood friend Baker, who can’t see the threatening darkness but promises to never give up on Dovey and Carly? Or will she plot with the sexy stranger, Isaac, who offers all the answers — for a price? Soon Dovey realizes that the danger closing in has little to do with Carly … and everything to do with Dovey herself.

Review: I really enjoy reading the books of the author and more precisely her Bud series that I loved to follow. So when the release of a new novel was announced, I was immediately curious. No, I admit that I did not even read the synopsis, but the cover intrigued me and I was very curious about the story. And what a story! Full of originality and ideas.

Since the death of Carly, her best friend, Dovey is under medication and is closely monitored by her entourage. But while she is having a nice moment in her former favorite coffee shop, she sees Carly off and remains convinced that it is not an illusion. But how is this possible? Especially when we know that the young woman died during the Josephine Hurricane. Dovey is determined to uncover the truth and decides on her own initiative to stop all medications and to convince her parents that she continues to take them. But this change is going to be brutal when she realizes that the world in which she has evolved so far is far from being normal. But is it a side effect? Allying with two very different boys, she will investigate this universe, putting her life in danger more than once and discovering that everything she believed in is about to change and demons live among humans, causing them to forget and manipulating them their own way. Dovey no longer wants to be handled and whatever happens, she wants her answers and fast! Yet her answers could well upset her very existence, because she is herself connected to everything occurring.

I loved Dovey throughout the chapters. This is a girl who has a lot of courage, and remains determined to keep her choices whatever the persons are trying to get her to do. I confess that I asked myself several times if everything happening was just a side effect of her treatment or if it was real and I think we really do know (I think) that at the end of the book. Yes because everything is possible is not it? We can not help but fall under her spell and understand her objectives throughout the novel and the author manages to perfectly keep the reader in suspense, trying to understand what is happening. Did I forget to mention the two men in the story? How is this possible? First we have Baker, a childhood friend of Carly and Dovey. This boy is adorable, he is ready to do anything to help her friend and hopes she will succumb at the same time to his charms. It was very cute to see him change here, he particularly affects us by his innocence and his desire to do well. And then there is Isaac and, it must be said that he is quite the opposite. This boy is mysterious, hiding many secrets, secrets he also reveals gradually throughout the story in a quite recalcitrant way. We know that he isn’t normal and as well as Dovey, we know that it may be dangerous to trust him and yet we can not help but want to learn more about him and see what he really wants. So yes, we also fall under his darker charm and his difficult life. But it is true that it’s difficult to choose between them at this stage.

In terms of the story, I admit that I was really curious to discover the truth about each of the characters and was also surprised more than once. I did not expect at all either such an end and it is true that by starting the story I did not know if this book would be part of a series and I very much hope now because this purpose makes us eager to learn more and discover how Dovey will live now and see what will happen to the other characters. A great discovery for me.

Servants of the Storm de Delilah S. Dawson (VO)

The Damsel and the Daggerman by Delilah S. Dawson

Blud, Book 2.5

Synopsis: Bad boy knife-thrower Marco Taresque is the hottest and most dangerous performer in the caravan. He keeps to himself until a pesky female journalist arrives, anxious to interview him about his checkered past—his last assistant disappeared under mysterious and bloody circumstances, earning him the nickname “The Deadly Daggerman.”

Unsinkable journalist and adventurer Jacinda Harville doesn’t take no for an answer, and she’s determined to wear down Marco no matter how threatening—or incredibly desirable—he might appear. He agrees to an interview—but only if she’ll let him strap her to a spinning table and throw knives at her body. How can she say no? And how can she resist him when he leans close for a kiss that strikes her more sharply than any blade? It’s the first time she’s let a man get the better of her, and she’s determined it will be the last…

Just when she thinks she can’t take any more of his games, Jacinda receives a note from Marco saying he’s finally ready to tell her the truth about what happened to his missing assistant. She sets out for an address miles away, but what she finds there turns the tables on everything she thought she knew about the tender lover who wears a smile as sharp as his knives.

As secrets are unraveled and passions take hold, Ginger realizes her hard heart has melted. But will it be too late to save Marco—and herself—from the daggerman’s dangerous past?

Review: I love this series! The ideas of the author are always extraordinary. So when I discovered the release of this new novella I was immediately excited to be able to immerse myself in it and discover a little bit more of this world so intriguing. Of course you can imagine that as each novella, the story is fast enough to read but I’m glad to say that it also has some nice twists.

Jacinda is a young journalist, widow, who decides to write a novel about Criminy’s caravans. But when she meets each person, she discovers a mystery that she is desperate to understand. Indeed, lives and works there, Marco, a man accused of murdering his assistant and she is sure he is innocent and wants to prove it. But why didn’t the young man tell her the truth? Seeking at all costs to understand what happened, but while continuing her quest, she may well be taken in her own game and fall for this man she knows nothing about.

I loved this little story. Marco is really intriguing and I confess that I asked myself more than once the question about what he was running away from. What is certain is that I did not expect such a revelation at the end of the story. This is so stupid I must say when you think about it. The characters are in any case a very nice duo and their interactions are always colorful. I also loved the determination of Jacinda, as well as her fragility suggested several times. This is again a very good story and I look forward to read the next novel.
