Blood of Eden, Tome 2

Résumé (traduction personnelle) : Allison Sekemoto a juré de sauver son créateur, Kanin, qui est pris en otage et torturé par le vampire psychotique Sarren. L’appel du sang la ramène à ses débuts à New Covington et le Fringe, avec un prince vampire qui veut sa mort et qui pourrait devenir un allié méfiant.

Même si Allie est face à des révélations choquantes et des drames comme elle n’en a jamais connu, une nouvelle souche du virus Red Lung qui a décimé l’humanité est en train de menacer humains et vampires.


Avis : Julie Kagawa ne déçoit jamais et j’étais vraiment curieuse de pouvoir enfin lire la suite des aventures d’Allison Sekemoto. Il faut dire que la fin était plus que frustrante et j’étais curieuse de voir son sauvetage de Kanin.
 
On retrouve donc en début de roman notre jeune héroïne en quête de son créateur, revivant chaque nuit ce qu’il endure, ne faisant ainsi que raffermir sa détermination à le sauver quoi qu’il en coûte. Ce qu’elle ne s’attend sûrement pas c’est à se retrouver nez à nez avec son « frère » Jackal qui l’attend gentiment pour lui proposer un marché. C’est une alliance assez étrange mais il lui propose de l’aider à trouver Kanin si elle l’aide à trouver le remède qu’il cherche tant. Mais leur quête va les ramener aux débuts d’Allie, sur les traces de son ancienne vie et vers des gens de son passé. 
 
J’ai été complètement surprise par Jackal dans ce roman, je ne m’attendais vraiment pas à un tel revirement de situation. Nous l’avions découvert dans le premier tome et j’avoue que c’est un personnage que j’ai tout de suite très peu apprécié. Mais mon sentiment a complètement changé dans ce roman. Oui il est vraiment très énervant et chiant surtout dans ses dialogues et actes, mais je crois que c’est seulement sa façon d’être lui-même. Il a cependant d’autres choses pour lui et malgré ses grands airs, il sait ce qu’il faut faire, il sait ce qui est juste. C’était assez étonnant d’ailleurs. Il essaie de faire comprendre à Allie que les vampires sont des monstres et de par son comportement il la trouve assez naïve, mais je pense qu’il le comprend aussi. Il a été ma grande surprise du livre. Bien sûr on retrouve notre chère Allie, qui est obsédée par sa quête. Elle veut plus que tout retrouver celui qui l’a aidé, mais elle ne s’attendait pas à ce que tout cela la mène sur de tels chemins, notamment sur un nouvelle forme de virus qui pourrait bien les tuer tous. 
 
Je ne vais pas en révéler beaucoup plus, car il serait très facile de vous raconter tout ce qu’il y à savoir mais c’était vraiment encore un très bon roman et c’était un plaisir d’avoir pu suivre une nouvelle aventure telle que celle-ci. On assiste à de nombreuses révélations et j’ai pris beaucoup de plaisir à revoir Kanin. Je crois qu’il m’avait un peu manqué à force dans le premier roman et c’était agréable de le redécouvrir ici. C’est un nouveau roman plein de surprises, de mystères et d’alliances auxquelles nous ne nous attendions pas. Et c’est vrai qu’à présent que j’ai fini je suis vraiment curieuse de voir ce qu’il adviendra dans le troisième tome !

Someone—or something—is targeting the elders of the local council, cursing the immortal vampires to rapidly age, sink into madness, and die. Risa must track down the vengeful being responsible. But Risa’s father, a rogue Aedh priest, also enlists her in a dangerous mission. And not even the great Madeline Hunter may be able to protect her from the shadowy forces that desire nothing less than Risa’s destruction.


Review: After the end of the first volume I was curious to see how our dear Risa would be able to deal with so many people after her and especially with her hunt for the keys. Well I must say that she will not be alone in this quest, her friends will help her, along with our dear reaper and Aedh. But I will return to them later.

Risa finds herself once again forced to deal with matters she would have preferred to forget. Now she has teamed up with Hunter, she does not have much choice and she must take care the case she has, or being killed. This time, she has to find the person or the creature who drains and kills some very old vampires. Something quite strange that nobody understands. But in addition to this, she is also forced by her father to find the keys that could bring hell on earth. She will have plenty things to do throughout the novel!

Of course, we find all the characters from the first novel, although it is true that I would have liked to see a little more Riley and learn more about the evolution of her powers. But Risa is still an interesting heroine to follow and it was a pleasure to have her once again. She is, however, a bit too naïve for my taste. She keeps for herself many facts, such as her feelings for her reaper or the fact that her Aedh has something to hide. I do not really understand how she managed to trust him when he acts to arouse suspicion. I asked myself many questions about him. Indeed, he happens to interfere in the life of our heroine and manages gradually to participate in her mission without anyone noticing the reason. I’d really like to understand if he has a hidden motive or if I’m imagining things and I admit that I am rather cautious and suspicious about his real intentions. I, however, really like Azriel as it seems he is able to evolve each time we see him, becoming a little more “human”, which allows us to be a little closer to him. But I confess that I find him hard to understand as he knows all the thoughts of our dear heroine and often does nothing to answer her doubts and questions. I doubt that it must be something really veeeeeery frustrating for her. I do not know how she manages to endure both, they want everything and give little in return … I am also waiting to see what Madeline Hunter wants from Risa, she seems determined to keep her alive but at the same time, it’s not so important If she had to kill her.

I’m curious to see what will happen, especially now that the problems are started. So it was a very good volume again and I look forward to see how our heroine will evolve in the middle of all these events and characters.

Risa Jones, Tome 2

Résumé (traduction personnelle) : Risa est prête à tout pour venger sa mère, même à conclure un pacte avec Madeline Hunter, l’implacable directrice du Conseil des vampires. En échange de son aide, Risa devra mettre ses pouvoirs à son service et lever la malédiction qui touche les Anciens : ces vampires, jusqu’alors immortels, vieillissent à toute vitesse, sombrent dans la démence et meurent. Une traque à haut risque qui exposera Risa à des forces occultes surpuissantes que même la protection de Madeline ne pourra détourner.

Avis : Après la fin du premier tome j’étais curieuse de voir comment notre chère Risa allait pouvoir s’en sortir avec autant de monde après elle et notamment dans sa chasse aux clefs. Bon il faut dire qu’elle ne sera pas toute seule dans cette quête, ses amis l’aideront, de même que son cher faucheur et son Aedh. Mais je reviendrais sur eux plus tard.
Risa se retrouve une fois de plus obligée de s’occuper d’affaires dont elle aimerait oublier l’existence. Maintenant qu’elle s’est alliée avec Hunter, elle n’a plus beaucoup le choix et se doit de s’occuper des affaires qu’elle lui donne, sous peine de se faire tuer. Elle doit donc cette fois ci retrouver la personne ou la créature qui draine et tue de très vieux vampires. Quelque chose d’assez étrange et que personne ne connait. Mais en plus de cela, elle se voit aussi obligée par son père de retrouver les clefs qui pourraient amener l’enfer sur terre. Il faut dire qu’elle aura alors de quoi s’occuper tout au long du roman !
Bien sûr, nous retrouvons tous les personnages du premier roman, bien qu’il soit vrai que j’aurais beaucoup aimé voir un peu plus Riley et en apprendre encore plus sur l’évolution de ses pouvoirs. Mais Risa est toujours une héroïne intéressante. Elle est cependant je trouve aussi un peu naïve. Elle se cache plusieurs faits, comme par exemple les sentiments de son faucheur ou encore le fait que son Aedh a vraiment quelque chose à cacher. Je ne comprends pas vraiment comment elle arrive à lui faire confiance alors qu’il agit de façon à éveiller les soupçons. Je me pose de nombreuses questions à son sujet, il arrive à s’immiscer dans la vie de notre héroïne et s’arrange petit à petit pour participer à sa mission sans que l’on sache la raison. J’aimerais vraiment comprendre s’il a un motif caché ou si je me fais des idées et j’avoue que je suis assez prudente et méfiante par rapport à ses réelles intentions. Je balance cependant plus vers Azriel qui semble évoluer davantage à chaque fois, devenant ainsi un peu plus « humain », ce qui nous permet de nous rapprocher un peu plus de lui. Mais j’avoue que j’ai du mal à le comprendre aussi, il connait toutes les pensées de notre chère héroïne et ne fait souvent rien pour répondre à ses doutes et ses questions. Je me doute que ça doit être quelque chose de vraiment trèèèès frustrant. Je ne sais pas comment elle arrive à les supporter tous les deux, ils veulent tout et ne rendent que peu en retour… J’attends aussi de voir ce que Madeline Hunter attend de Risa, elle semble déterminée à la garder en vie mais en même temps, cela ne la dérangerait pas de la tuer si besoin était.
Je suis assez curieuse de voir ce qu’il adviendra surtout maintenant que les problèmes sont amorcés. C’était donc un nouveau très bon tome et j’ai hâte de voir comment va évoluer notre héroïne au milieu de tous ces événements et personnages.

Club Monstrosity by Jesse Petersen

Monstrosity, Book 1

Synopsis: Natalie’s one of Frankenstein’s creations and works in a New York City morgue. So of course she needs therapy. She and her friends—er, fellow monsters—have formed the world’s most exclusive, most dysfunctional support group. What could go wrong?

Undetected in the modern world and under pressure to stay that way, Natalie Grey, Dracula, Bob the Blob, and others (including the fetching wolfman Alec) meet regularly to talk about the pressures of being infamous in the Big Apple. Topics include how long it’s been since their last sighting, how their “story” creates stereotypes they can’t fulfill, and—gasp—sometimes even their feelings. But when their pervy Invisible Man, Ellis, is killed in a manner reminiscent of the H.G. Wells novel, it’s clear someone’s discovered their existence and is down for some monster busting.

Led by Natalie—and definitely not helped by Hyde’s bloodthirsty tendencies—the members of Monstofelldosis Anonymous band together for security and a little sleuthing. And maybe—maybe—if they don’t end up dead, they’ll end up friends somewhere along the way.

Review: I really enjoyed the “Living with the dead” series by Jesse Petersen, so I immediately wanted to get into this new one when I discovered its existence. I must say that the summary also really intrigued me. Why is that? I admit that I only had to read “ Frankenstein’s creations ” , “Dracula”  and “Hyde” … What an explosive mix would you say? And it is exactly that! I was very surprised to see so many famous people in the same novel, and I was curious to see how they were all able to interact. And I can say that Jesse has managed to write a really nice book.
 
Natalie is one of the many creations by Frankenstein, but does not really accept her condition as “zombie”, a word she hates. She wants more and she would love to live like other people and not have to worry about her condition as “monster.” However, she must be very careful not to reveal herself to humans and therefore she must constantly hide her scars. As she tries to improve her existence, she is part of a small group of people, monsters like her, trying to adapt in the world. They often do some sessions to talk about their concerns and their desires. We meet many other characters like Alex the werewolf who must constantly shave himself as he has fur everywhere; Linda, the woman with green scales who is the most emotional of all the group; and Jekyll and Hyde, I do not think I need to present them. They are perfect, like the characters we know from the books and movies; Drake, the new name of Dracula who is determined to do as he pleases; Kai, the resurrected mummy and even Van Helsing. Convinced? I really enjoyed the presence of these highly colored characters. They are very different but always here to support each other. But when the president of their club, Bob disappears and when the invisible man is found dead, panic sets in, causing the concern of all. But our characters are far from giving up and are determined to understand what’s happening and to find out who is behind it.
   
All the characters are interesting to explore and I must say that there is only one who has irritated me a little and it’s Linda. She is a sensitive young woman who cries at every opportunity and would do anything to solve the problems by themselves. We would love to occasionally shake her so she realizes that life is not perfect. Unlike her, the other characters are very dynamic. Of course, we can only love our true main character, Natalie. This is a young woman who easily hides her emotions and she is strong and courageous as well as very sensitive. We would be able to help her to have her dream life but it is impossible. She will team up with the exasperating and also very charming Alec, in their investigations. They are together a very nice duo and we wondered how their relationship was going to change because I have to say they are very talented for denying their feelings. But their association will allow them to understand the workings of the disappearances and to bring a complicity they never suspected. Kai is for me the most complex character in the novel. Indeed, it is easy to hate her at the beginning of the story by her attitude so arrogant and haughty, but we realize through the chapters that she is much more than that and she only waits for the right moment to reveal herself.
   
It was a very good first novel for a series that I will follow now. The plot is really well built and I was surprised by several points throughout the story. If you want to discover or rediscover the legendary characters we know, I recommend this book.

Les sujets traités parlent des dernières fois où ils ont été découverts, comment leur «histoire» a pu créer des stéréotypes qu’ils ne peuvent pas remplir, et in extremis, parfois même de leurs sentiments. Mais quand leur pervers homme Invisible, Ellis, est tué d’une manière qui rappelle le roman de HG Wells, il est clair que quelqu’un a découvert leur existence et s’est mis en chasse des monstres.
Dirigée par Natalie et certainement pas aidés par les tendances sanguinaires de Hyde – les membres de la bande Monstofelldosis Anonymous s’allient ensemble pour leur sécurité et un peu d’enquête. Et peut-être, peut-être, s’ils ne finissent pas morts, ils finiront amis quelque part le long du chemin.



Avis : J’ai beaucoup apprécié la série de zombies de Jesse Petersen, je me suis donc tout de suite lancée dans cette nouvelle quand j’ai découvert son existence. Je dois dire que le résumé m’a tout de suite intriguée. Pourquoi ? J’avoue qu’il m’a suffi de lire « création de Frankenstein », « Dracula », « Hyde »… Quel mélange détonant me direz-vous ? Et c’est exactement cela ! J’étais très surprise de voir autant de personnages célèbres dans un même roman et j’étais curieuse de voir comment ils allaient pouvoir tous interagir. Et je peux dire que Jesse a réussi un joli mélange.
Natalie est une des nombreuses créations de Frankenstein, mais n’accepte pas vraiment sa condition de « zombie », mot qu’elle déteste. Elle aimerait plus que tout vivre comme les autres humains et ne pas avoir à se soucier de sa condition de « monstre ». Il faut cependant qu’elle fasse très attention à ne pas se dévoiler aux humains et doit constamment cacher ses cicatrices. Pour essayer de remonter la pente et  de vivre au mieux, elle fait partie d’un petit groupe de personnes, des monstres comme elle, qui essaie de s’adapter. Ils font donc des séances assez souvent pour parler de leurs soucis et de leurs envies. On rencontre ainsi de nombreux autres personnages : Alex le loup-garou qui doit constamment se raser pour ne pas se voir pousser de la fourrure partout ; Linda, la femme à écailles vertes qui est la plus émotive de tout le groupe ; Jekyll et Hyde que je n’ai-je pense pas le besoin de présenter et qui sont parfaitement à l’image des livres ou films que l’on a pu lire ou voir ; Drake, le nouveau nom de Dracula qui est bien décidé à ne faire que ce qui lui plait ; Kai, la momie ressuscitée  et même les Van-Helsing. Convaincus ? J’ai vraiment beaucoup apprécié la présence de tous ces personnages hautement en couleur. Ils sont très différents mais font tout pour se supporter les uns les autres. Mais quand le président de leur Club Bob disparait et qu’un membre l’homme, invisible se retrouve assassiné, la panique s’installe, provoquant l’inquiétude de tous. Mais nos personnages sont loin d’abandonner la partie et sont bien décidés à comprendre ce qu’il se passe et surtout à trouver qui est derrière tout ça. 
Tous les protagonistes sont intéressants à découvrir et je dois dire qu’il n’y en a qu’un qui m’a un peu irrité et c’est Linda. C’est une jeune femme sensible qui se renferme sur elle-même à la moindre occasion et qui ferait tout pour que les problèmes se règlent par eux même. On aimerait beaucoup de temps en temps la secouer pour qu’elle se rende compte que la vie n’est pas faite ainsi. A l’inverse les autres personnages sont vraiment très dynamiques. Bien sûr, on ne peut qu’aimer notre véritable personnage principal, Natalie. C’est une jeune femme qui cache facilement ses émotions mais qui sous une apparence forte et courageuse est aussi très sensible. On aimerait pouvoir l’aider à avoir la vie qu’elle rêve bien que ça soit impossible. Elle fera équipe avec l’exaspérant et aussi très charmant Alec, dans ses enquêtes. Ils font tous les deux un très joli duo et je me demandais comment leur relation allait pouvoir évoluer car il faut dire qu’ils sont très fort pour le déni. Mais leur association leur permettra de comprendre les rouages des disparitions et de faire naître une complicité qu’ils ne soupçonnaient pas. Kai est pour moi le personnage le plus complexe du roman. En effet, on la déteste facilement au début de l’histoire de par son attitude si arrogante et hautaine, mais on se rend compte en progressant à travers les chapitres qu’elle est tout de même bien plus que ça et qu’elle n’attend que le bon moment pour se dévoiler.
C’était un très bon premier roman pour une série que je vais suivre à présent. L’intrigue est vraiment bien construite et j’ai été surprise par plusieurs points tout au long de l’histoire. Si vous avez envie de découvrir ou redécouvrir des personnages mythiques je vous conseille ce livre.

Comment décririez-vous la série Jessica McClain ?
C’est une série d’urban fantasy pleine d’action et d’aventures. Jessica est la seule loup-garou femelle, et à cause de cela tout le monde surnaturel est après elle. Elle partage sa vie avec de nombreux supers personnages et cela la rend intéressante.  
Que peuvent attendre les lecteurs pour les prochains tomes ? *Croise les doigts pour en apprendre plus sur le tome 3 * 
Plus d’action. Dans HOT BLOODED, Jessica voyage pour sauver son homme et découvrir qui elle est et quel genre de pouvoir elle détient. Dans COLD BLOODED, elle approfondit les choses. Elle est tout de suite en fuite. Beaucoup de suspens et de rencontres tandis qu’elle se rend à la Nouvelle-Orléans. Ils ont tous été fun à écrire.
Alors Jessica, d’où vient-elle ?
LOL, de ma tête ! Jessica est tout ce que j’aime dans une héroïne. Elle est intelligente, coriace, forte et insolente. Elle est apparue dans ma tête complètement formée.
Si vous pouviez rencontrer un personnage de vos livres, qui serait-ce et pourquoi ?
Wow. Probablement Jessica. J’adorerais m’assoir et boire une bière avec elle.
Si vous le pouviez, voudriez-vous échanger votre place avec un de vos personnages ?
Pour une nuit avec Rourke ? Mon dieu oui, je voudrais être Jessica !
Comment choisissez-vous les noms de vos personnages ? Est-ce juste des noms que vous aimez, des gens que vous connaissez ou autre ?
La plupart des noms sont juste apparus dans ma tête, prêts à être employés. Ils sont toujours parfaits pour la personne. Je ne sais pas comment ça arrive, mais ils ne correspondent jamais à quelqu’un que je connais.

Pourriez-vous décrire votre journée habituelle ?
Je me réveille et me fais une géante tasse de café. Je m’assois à mon bureau et vérifie mes emails et réseaux sociaux. Ensuite, j’écris ou je modifie, prenant quelques pauses durant la journée – surtout pour vérifier Facebook ou Twitter. Les enfants rentrent à la maison et nous faisons les courses et préparons le diner. Ensuite je fais pratiquement la même chose. J’ai l’habitude d’éteindre mon ordinateur vers minuit et recommencer ainsi le jour suivant.
Quel est votre moment le plus mémorable (bon, mauvais ou autre) que vous ayez-eu en tant qu’auteur ?
Je dirais que c’est « L’appel » pour que me dire que mon livre a été vendu qui a été le meilleur des moments. Mon agent m’a surprise avec un coup de téléphone à l’improviste. C’était fantastique. 

Quand vous vous asseyez et que vous écrivez, savez-vous à l’avance comment l’histoire se finira ou vous laissez-vous guider par le stylo ?
Non, je laisse le stylo me guider. C’est ce que j’aime le plus dans le processus d’écriture. Quand une histoire me surprend, c’est le plus beau des cadeaux. Cela me garde toute excitée.
Quelle a été la scène la plus difficile à écrire?
Je déteste les « entre deux temps », quand les personnages vont d’un endroit à un autre. Ceux-ci sont les plus durs à écrire, car c’est difficile de faire quelque chose de banal quelque chose d’intéressant. 
Comment vous sentez-vous maintenant que vos livres vont sortir en France ?
Je suis SI excitée !!!! J’espère que les Français adoreront les livres. Si je vends bien, je pourrais être capable de venir! C’est un rêve que de venir à Paris et de découvrir la France.

Can you present you in a few words?
My name is Amanda Carlson and I’m the author of the Jessica McClain series. I live in Minneapolis, MN and have three kids. I’ve lived here all my life, but I can’t wait to visit the rest of the world.
How would you describe the Jessica McClain series?
It’s an exciting action and adventure urban fantasy series. Jessica is the only female werewolf, and because of that the supernatural world is after her. She shares her life with a bunch of fun characters and that makes it interesting.

What can readers expect from the upcoming sequels? *fingers crossed to know more about the third novel*
More action. In HOT BLOODED Jessica is on a journey to save her man and discover who she is and what kind of power she can wield. In COLD BLOODED, she jumps back into the thick of things. Immediately she is on the run. Lots of suspense and close encounters as she makes her way down to New Orleans. They were both so much fun to write.
So Jessica, where’d she come from?
LOL, my head! Jessica is everything I love about a heroine. She’s smart, tough, strong and sassy. She popped into my mind already fully formed.
If you could meet any characters in your book, who would it be and why?
Wow. Probably Jessica. I’d love to sit down and have a beer with her.
If you could, would you change places with any of your characters? 
For a night with Rourke? Hell yes, I’d be Jessica!
How do you pick the names of your characters? Are they just names you like, people you know or do they have some other meaning?
Most of the character’s names just pop into my head ready to go. They always fit the person well. I have no idea how that happens, but they are never from anyone I know.

Could you describe your average day and writing practices?
I wake up and pour myself a giant cup of coffee. I sit at my desk and catch up on email and social media. Then I either write or edit, taking little mind breaks during the day—mostly checking in with facebook or twitter. The kids come home and we run errands and cook dinner. Then I do more of the same. I usually close my laptop around midnight and start over the next day.
What is the most memorable moment (good, bad, or other) you have had in your life as an author? 
I’d have to say getting “The Call” that my book had sold was the very best moment I’ve had so far. My agent surprised me with a phone call out of the blue. It was fantastic.
When you sit down and write do you know how the story will end or do you just let the pen take you?
No, I let the pen take me. It’s what I love the most about the writing process. When the story surprises me it’s like the best present ever. It keeps me excited.
What’s the hardest scene for you to write?
I hate the in between time, when the characters are getting from one place to another. Those are the hardest to write, because it’s hard to make something mundane jump off the page.
How do you feel now that your books are soon out in French?
I’m SO excited!!!! I so hope the French audience love the books. If I sell well, I may I’ll be able to come for a visit! It’s a dream of mine to see Paris and the French countryside.
